Best modern reclining sofa?

Hi all

Need advice please!

I need to get a new sofa. Prefer modern/contemporary style, not overstuffed, but it has to be comfortable. Looking for 3-cushion, reclining, good quality, and on the smaller side since I have no room right now (but that changes as we move often). Prefer fabric but could go for leather.

Currently have La-z-boy but after about 4 years the arms feel as though they have lost their padding.

Love, love, love the feel of the Ekornes but haven't seen many reviews, and most of the ones out there are not positive.

Thoughts?

We are currently on our second Ekornes recliner (the first one lasted DH over 18 years) and have two Ekornes sofa/love seat sets. We love them and would definitely buy Ekornes again. They have held up extremely well and are the most comfortable sofas I have come across - I just love the back support they provide.

Thanks. I'm always leery when someone says they had something that lasted 18 years since the quality of many things made 18 years ago was much better than it is now--just tells me I should have bought something 18 years ago! But if you are on your second one (and have others in the same line) and still think highly of them, then that's a good sign!

The story behind the quality of motion furniture (recliners included) is the metal mechanism. The engineering design and the quality of the metal used will determine how long the sofa or chair will last. Legget & Platt and Hickory Springs are the 2 major US suppliers for the recliner mechanisms. They usually have the best quality mechanisms. Many manufacturers import their mechanisms from China, including Best Chair and Lane. A cheaper mechanism with weak joints and low quality steel will not last long.

Just bought one a few months ago so I can't address long term. It's holding up so far, though. One thing I don't like is that since it comes in three pieces (due to the power part), everything doesn't line up exactly there the pieces hook together. Most people probably wouldn't notice it, but I do. I keep fluffing up the seat cushions on the ends so they stay level w/ the middle part. Also, the seat depth is a little shallow, so if you're on the fluffy side like me, lying down on the sofa is not the most comfortable position. It's at the beach condo, so not used all the time, so hopefully it will last us a good long time. I love the little buttons for the power! Check Room & Board, which has more modern styles than others. Be sure to click on each sofa option because they are generally available in multiple sizes, including down to twin and double beds. http://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/living/sleeper-sofas Lots of options in leather and fabric. I highly recommend looking specifically at the ones that are made by "American Upholstery/American Leather", because they are as comfortable as a regular bed but also good as a sofa. We have the Berin, and have no problem having friends and family sleep on it (at worst, they describe it as similar to a "firm" mattress). It's in our study, and i often hang out on it as a sofa - and it is very comfortable. American Upholstery is generally considered the gold standard of comfortable sleeper sofas, so their venture with R&B (a modernist store) is probably exactly what you're looking for.

Bought a set of home stretch 129 sofas and they are already failing 2 months later so the furniture place is letting us do a extange stanton and best home is what is in our budget but I know nothing about the quality of either and dont wanna buy junk again

Right on Robin, nothing lasts 18 years anymore! I am considering having recliners in a new sectional but am now reconsidering. I called the owner of the store where I got my last set of sofa's and right off she tried to dissuade me against reclining furniture and we hadn't even discussed $$$ yet! Ugh! From my own research here on GW and other spots, Legget and Platt reclining mechanisms are considered the best in the industry. Hancock and Moore in leather are one brand that truly should last a lifetime.
