The carpenter is just strating to install shelving in my wine room. I'm a firm believer in form following function, so I went with rectangular shelving in various sizes to hold different types of bottles.

Nice. :-)

Wish we had a room that we could dedicate to turning into a wine cellar. Had to settle -- today was the day our new VinothÃ¨que wine cellar was delivered. Holds 500 bottles, so that will have to do for now.

There's still a way to go, but I think I'll be able to start fillng the cellar by the end of next month.

IMO we need a bit of info . 1st what do you need in way of storage like how many bottles for sure. Why do you need custom , there are 100s of beautiful wine racks to be found that are not custom. Are you having a tasting space in the wine cellar. What is your style ?

Our's is a 600lb iron door w/ clear glass. The wine room (frequently called The Blue Zone since it stores veggies and vino!) is under our front stoop. It is technically outdoors so requires an exterior door. The room is all concrete and so far remains about 64°f and 60%RH.. I was hoping for a bit cooler but this isn't too bad and the RH is perfect. We only have a very few bottles of collector level wine and it's all OK in these conditions. The bulk of our wine is $9-$60 daily drinker with an average cost of about $18 / bottle. Half is Cananou and half is a variety but heavy on French and Napa. It is all completely good with this temp. This is far from ideal as a root cellar. We don't typically store stuff for a very long so hopefully it's good enough.

Wow the previous owners probably invested a lot of money into that wine cellar. I can see how it would be very difficult to handle if you don't drink wine. I actually love your idea for yarn storage. Just think how beautiful the colorful yarn would be neatly organized in there! That said, I think your options are to dismantle the room and turn it into something completely different, or somehow repurpose or leave it as-is, but empty. You can always store other beverages in there (fancy sparkling water, etc), but it's always going to look like a very high end wine cellar / collection.

I see that one bin is designed for glasses -- that says to me that either it's a tasting room as well, or it wants to evoke that feel. So yes, more stylish than a closet (althoughn we spend plenty of time on closets here too!)... Agree that temperature control is a bigger challenge, but I think this is a neat use of a tricky under-stairs space. Maybe a little high-top table with a pair of stools where the crate currently is?

Oh, I love the door! The stain on the shelves is really pretty, too.

Nice door. But you let the thread die. If you read it, post some pics with the shelves filled. I put the same type in on one side of my cellar. They enable you to max your storage capacity. But they're terrible for Rhone shaped bottles when you try to get a bottle from the bottom of the box.
