Stomping Grapes in Greece

Yesterday I watched a neat program, one of Samantha Brown's travel shows, this time about the Greek Isles.

She got to stomp some grapes, I think in Crete, or maybe it was Santorini? She is a delightfully unpretentious traveller, always on the lookout for a lighthearted adventure. I love her programs!

As a novice to wines, I admit my lack of experience. But I saw something that set me to thinking. The vat she was in held primarily red grapes, but they came along and poured in some white grapes as well. So this one was to be a blend, obviously. How can one learn what grape is used to make a particular European wine blend if it is one of those regions that goes by terroir rather than our American method of naming by variety? And, what about these wines that are not just grapes, but have other fruits added. I bought one in central Texas recently that was a blend of grape and wildflower elixir!!! Very different taste!

lol, yeah, it sounds sort of slimy, doesn't it? I am a nurse, and the idea of drinking wine that somebody's dirty feet were smashing is not very hygienic! I just keep telling myself that the fermentation hopefully kills any athlete's foot.... at least, I hope so!

Here's the deal. We get clean trash cans. Bleach em out. Put the grapes in. Then we put bleach/water in plastic containers and we soak our feet prior to stepping up the sanitized step stool to get our sanitized footsies into the grapes. We put on Garth or Jimmy Buffet, and stomp!!

Your best bet is probably to skip the lower rail. I think 16 inches is way too low, you'd have canes on the ground. Even the top rail could be a little higher, but will probably work. There's definitely not enough room for 4 arms, barely enough for 2. Your posts are 11 feet apart, right? You could plant 1 vine at each post and extend the arms half way to the next post (5.5 feet in each direction would be a pretty good length). Snow cover should not hurt the vines, it will actually insulate them somewhat from the cold. The only question I would have is, do they use any chemicals (or salts) on the road? I don't grow seedless concord, but everyone that I have talked to that does says not to waste your time. I have heard the yield is small and the taste is not the best. You might want to consider getting a different kind or even regular, seeded concord.

Mrs G, Zante is vinifera which is too much work for me in my climate. I would recommend you try Petite Jewel, its a hybrid grape that is small and supposedly very good. I was growing it but the plant died before I could try the fruits. I think Fedco was selling it at some point. Its not Zante but will be about as close as you can get in your climate I would say. Note the word "currant" for ribes comes from "Corinth" - the currants were named after the grape, not the other way around. These small grapes were grown in Zante/Corinth in Greece a verrry long time ago. Scott

Yeah, my understanding is that most of the wineries downstate actually import most of their grapes from vineyards in the high plains, Permian basin because of quality issues. High and dry, cooler nights. Those guys passing off "our" grapes as their own is fine by me, so long as the wine tastes good. ;)
