Cheap Wallpaper

I need a little bit of wallpaper to put on the back side of some glass cabinet doors to block the view. I was looking for a blue toile with a cream/light yellow background but all I've found so far is that you have to buy a double roll. Does anyone sell what I'm looking for in a smaller amount? I've never bought wallpaper before so it's a little confusing.

Go to a store nearby and ask if they have scraps or single rolls that a customer has brought back in that pattern but that is doubtful as wallpaper is sold in double rolls. It's actually more economical to the consumer and the industry that way secondary to a lot of factors, but that is the bottom line for all of us. There was a time when it was sold in triple rolls.

If a friend has some left over from a job, that might be a good source but a double roll on the clearance counter at a wallpaper store would be your best bet as it is usually just marked at the UPS or post office for shipping since they cannot retrieve their money and just want their shipping costs back.

I would try to find some interesting wrapping paper in a sturdy weight.

Paper Source has beautiful designs, though probably not toile. I have used it for a variety of projects and it is wonderful to work with.

Other good sources for high quality paper include The Container Store and Papyrus. The former has some lovely, more traditional designs in its wedding category.

I have seen really convincing beadboard wallpaper right here on GW. However, when I was at Lowes awhile back and looked at their brand it looked awful and cheap. It was not heavy and did not look as though it would take paint well. Based on that I would advise to go with the heaviest paper you can find. Have you ever used anaglypta? It is meant for uneven walls and comes in a variety of heavy, embossed patterns.

Ottertail, Do you love the border and is it something that will add to your enjoyment? I think you home is your castle and it should be decorated for you and your family's enjoyment. Here's my own "It's Out of Style" faux pas: My DH and I recently built and moved into a new home. I used brass for my door hardware (balwin brass), my kitchen hardware and my lamps (vintage stiffel)/lighting (waterford). I love the warmth of brass (not the yellow, shinny, fake stuff) and I love how it fits in with my tradtional decor. Now, I'm sure there are some who would walk in my home and say to themselves (and a few even out loud), "Why did she put out of style brass in her new house?" While others would say, "I love that you went with the brass" and would admire me for going with what I like. My friends like me for who I am and appreciate the fact I beat to my own drum. Bottom line, brass is what was right for me and my family. Add the border! Get on the bandwagon! Start decorating to your own beat! P.S. I used chrome fixtures in my bathrooms:-0 They look perfect with my silver vanity pieces, but that's another story for another post.

hollybar-- and anyone else with grasscloth wallpaper-- do you have any pictures you'd be willing to share? I'm considering installing grasscloth wallpaper either above or below the chair rail in our dining room but am intimidated as I've never worked with wallpaper before. I need some encouragement! Originally I was thinking of adding it below the chair rail, but we have 3 cats so that could really be a disaster. The first house I bought as an adult had wallpapered bedrooms where the wallpaper had been painted over. The house was built in 1900 and I guess at some point a previous owner decided to paint over the wallpaper rather than remove it. I actually didn't mind the textured look... It was kind of interesting. Which was good because I sure wasn't about to try and strip off layers of paint and wallpaper.

Another suggestion: purchase some toile fabric, use spray adhesive to mount it onto something sturdy such as poster board or lightweight cardboard and attach to the back of the glass cabinet. You may also be able to use a sash rod. You can than purchase only what you need.

Would this work for you? Better hurry, just 9.99 right now, with 3 hours to go! If not there are some more traditional toiles available on Ebay at around the same price point.

Well,

I forgot that I just bought the Lill curtain at Ikea to put over the glass on the front door and I have a ton of it left over (it came with two panels). I'm thinking about trying to tea stain it and just tacking it up in the door. It is just a temporary fix while we have the house on the market. I'm going to get some nice silk fabric to hang inside the door after we move.

I'm not sure if the tea staining will work on these since they're polyester but it won't matter if I ruin it because I wasn't going to use them anyway.
