Are wallpaper borders out of style?
Comments (22)I forgot that the gallery was there; I will go look. I have polled the family, and even though I was the one who did the faux top half, everyone says thatÂs their favorite paint treatment in the house. I think they all remember me adding a new color to it now and then over time. In the pictures the base color looks pink, itÂs really a soft salmon. I could easily put a glaze over it to subdue it more, as long as I didnÂt have to match the unpainted parts of it. The more I look at the border the more dated I feel it is. I think I needed someone to tell me. I also thought of a chair rail, which I would like, except the whole issue of that awkward doorway into the kitchen. I would love to case all these drywalled doorways, but I have a lot of them, and I think the effect would not be worth the amount of effort it would take. If I did one I feel like I would have to do all of them. IÂm not sure about casing a doorway that has no door, eitherÂwould it look odd? Plus I have my new DR furniture in, and the buffet is higher than my old one, effectively covering much of a chair rail if I had one. I think my best option is to cover the old border with a new border, or remove it and put in a new one. At least I can paint first without having to protect the border. I do like the idea of something architectural, ajsmama! I love egg and dart. You reminded me, I was in a new hotel this last summer that had a wonderful architectural "crown molding" that was a border. That leads me to think maybe something that LOOKS like a chair rail, like tromp dÂoeil. I think it could go well with the new formal furniture too....See MoreThe Wallpaper Border Catastrophe
Comments (46)We had a stubborn border or two at our last house, thanks to the POs. Here's what we did. Score the border with the paper tiger. Fill a bucket with hot water, and add some vinegar and some fabric softener (be generous with both). Get a scrubby scotch-brite pad. Dip the pad into the bucket and start massaging the border with the scrubby side of the scotch brite. Get it good and wet. Keep going over a small area (we did a foot or two at a time) for several minutes. Keep dipping the pad into the water -- you need to get it really really wet. Eventually, the border will start to dissolve and come off on the scotch brite. When that happens, try the scraper. If it doesn't come off, resume the scrubbing. Eventually we were able to get the top layer of the border off leaving just some sticky glue/residue and some of the "back paper". Then the glue came off with more scrubbing and some scraping. It sounds tedious, but once we got the hang of it, it actually went pretty fast. The key was to get the border so wet that it was basically falling apart before trying to scrape -- let the water do the work for you. Good luck!...See MoreShould I Keep My Wallpaper Border
Comments (33)For those who said that you can't move cabinet pulls because of the holes-- When they're painted like these, the holes can be filled with wood putty, sanded smooth and painted and will not show if done carefully. Moving them is definitely an option, but would require work, and of course, the desire to do all that paint touch-up. Re the border: I'm not a fan but if you like it, then keep it up. It reminds me of the 70's....See MoreWallpaper borders
Comments (12)Thanks for all of your responses. I understand how many people turn up their noses at borders. I don't want a cheesy, run-of-the-mill border either. I just thought with all of the designers out there making such neat wallpapers (see Etsy!), that I could find a unique border too. I want to freshen up a room that was painted nicely and had a border at the chair rail level. I liked the look of the room and thought it would be quick to redo in different colors, same style. I like the idea of a stencil (again, see Etsy!) but when removing the original wallpaper border, I found that it was over a drywall seam where they didn't mud!! I would like to do it correctly but of course...time. Plus, I'd have to learn how to do it....See Moresable_ca
