Looking for a better foil cutter

Hi folks -

Can anyone recommend a foil cutter that doesn't start falling apart immediately?

I've been using those el cheapo plastic ones with 4 small metal cutter wheels, but they are beyond hope - my current one lost 2 cutter wheels within the first 2 weeks.

I picked this latest one up in Williams Sonoma at the mall - now I know why the woman who fetched it from the stock room said, "These are really popular - people buy a ton of them - do you want more than one?" That's because you need to replace it every month or so :o(

I'm looking for a more sturdily built, better-designed cutter. Also one that can handle the plastic (as opposed to foil) cork wrappers used on many Argentinian and Chilean wines. Any suggestions?

I've recently learned that with most bottles of wine you can just pull off the foil. Just twist it a little and off it comes. So much easier than fussing around cutting the foil. With some bottles the foil is on too tight to pull off, I use the knife on the waiter's corkscrew. I've never had a foil cutter so I can't give you any recommendations there.

I have had a Screwpull foil cutter since the mid/late eighties. It gets a lot of use since I wait tables for a living. I can't see how it could break, maybe you got one with a defect? I buy a lot of them too, but only because everyone who sees mine wants one for themselves, and I give them as gifts a lot.

When I went to find a link for a Screwpull foil cutter I see they have a newly designed Trilogy model from LeCruset. I have not seen one of those in action. Is that the one you bought?

I have had no trouble with my foil cutter on lead or plastic. I don't use it for foil only because it gives a jagged edge to foil, but so does using the knife cutter on a corkscrew. I get better results using my fingernail as you can push down and smooth the foil as you go around it. I have not tried using it on bottles that use sealing wax. I hate sealing wax on bottles. Its tough even using a knife on them and you can never get a clean cut, as the wax crumbles and flies around.

I don't know of any other brands of foil cutters out there and I believe they are still under patent so knock-off copies cannot be made for a least a few more years.

Hi Micki, I use 12-16 oz cups for spring-sowing the annuals, veggies, and herbs. Usually do those in early April. I line them up in plastic boxes and put those up against the foundation on the south side of the house. This is a warm spot that gets extra sun and even when we get a hard frost at night in April it doesn't reach this area, because the foundation holds heat thru the night. So I don't bother to put covers over those. One of the purposes of covers or tops on containers is that will help the container to warm up in the sun, and it acts like a mini-greenhouse (also protect the seeds from weather, critters, etc). You just have to be careful, because if it's warm and sunny, a container can get too hot, and fry little seedlings. Here's an example, these are Daylily seedlings, sowed in Cup o noodles cups and lined up in an old refrigerator drawer. Easy to water from the bottom when the cups are in plastic boxes.

I don't have either of those, but I have a Wishblade, (the older one) and I love it. I fact I'm just sitting down to do my first project since I started decorating for Christmas. I would think that newer could only be better. I love the scrapbook pages I've done with the WB. That is mostly what I use it for. - Gail

I also work with many teens who cut themselves. It is indeed a common problem and peer influence that this is a legitimate way to handle stress is strong. I knew cutters 30 years ago, so while it is more common now, it is not a recent phenomenon. In contrast to what others have said, I would say that you cannot generalize and say any individual cutter is not cutting for attention--several of my clients absolutely do cut for attention. For some, it is a way to externalize and draw attention to the problems they are having (social problems, adoption/grief issues, etc) which might go unnoticed by even attentive parents, because parents are not privy to all of the child's experiences or feelings, and kids may resist discussing things openly that they fear will hurt parents (e.g. adoption issues, social failure). For others, it is a way to punish/get a reaction from parents who otherwise are too involved in their own emotional/behavioral chaos to focus on the child's needs. The child's need for attention is natural and healthy, but the parents do not provide it and desperate measures are the result. The triggers for cutting, the timing of how/when the child reveals his or her episodes of cutting, and the degree of injury are all clues that can help a therapist figure out what is motivating the behavior. In any case, CBT and DBT are most often the treatments of choice, with or without anti-anxiety or anti-depressant meds as desired by the child and/or parents. Many parents fear the behavior that will go on indefinitely, and for some teens it does, but the majority are able to transfer the impulse toward other outlets once the underlying problems are being addressed. As an earlier poster stated, it is also not safe to assume a cutter is not suicidal. True that they are not trying to die by cutting, but the depression and anxiety underlying the behavior are risk factors for suicide which may well be carried out by other means, e.g. pills, hanging, and driving into walls, to mention just three of the methods lethal to teens in our service area this school year.

There is always the old use of wrapping the TV antenna for better reception!!! I use it to line pans in the over so that I don't have to clean up the overflow mess. I have also lined my oven racks with it when I am baking bread in case I have filled the pan too full and it spills over. When I had a electric stove, I would line under my burners to catch spills. You can also use it for kids school projects. I also used it the other day to keep my son's soup hot. I warmed the soup in the microwave in the morning and wrapped the container in foil and he said it was still really warm 4 hours later. I have also used the same theory to keep pop or juice cold. Couldn't live without foil!!!

Hi Bud -

That's the EXACT brand and model that fell apart on me recently. Maybe I did get a defective one, but the previous one fell apart quickly too. Right now I'm using a small knife. Tired of scraping the foil with my fingernails and breaking them. Guess I'll keep looking until I find something that looks and feels sturdier.

Are you saying you bought the Screwpull Trilogy model? Or the original model Screwpull I have, that I inked to? I am puzzled are to why yours would break so easily. I know lots of waiters/bartenders who use Screwpull foil cutters, and I have never heard of one breaking.

Are you using them to cut through the sealing wax that some maufacturers are using these days? I don't think foil cutters were made for the tough job of cutting through sealing wax and I do not use mine on those bottles. More and more manufacturers are stopping the use of traditional lead foil on wine bottles due to health concerns. I hate sealing waxed bottles.

Please tell me you are not trying to use a foil cutter on champagne bottles.

Maybe if you write to the Screwpull headquarters and complain about the longevity of the two you purchased they will do something out of goodwill?

Another here who has used the same screwpull foil cutter for about 20 years....I think they are great!

DH and I use a vegetable peeler around the top edge. Works like a charm.

A vegetable peeler?!?! How? Can you explain how to use a vegetable peeler to cut through a lead top with a clean cut?

In reference to the sealing wax, I've not had many problems with my waiter's key going through the wax and cork and pulling the cork through the wax. I prefer the waiter's key to the "rabbit" style openers because I can stop the cork half-way through and remove the loose pieces before continuing. Best for this is the non-teflon type corkscrews.

Better yet and I don't have to hassle with the loose pieces, there's two options to try. First, is to warm the wax in the palm of your hand prior to opening. The other is running hot water over the top...better option is if you have a instant hot water dispenser. Keeping the water over the top where you need to pop the cork doesn't effect the temp of the wine.
