Marvin vs Pella vs __?__ brand alum-clad double-hung windows
Comments (1)I bought the PElla wood vinyl-clad. I've had these before for at least 6 years, and was satisfied with them. There are only a few cosmetic differences between Pellla's highest series (Architect?) and the next one down (which is also wood vinyl clad), but the cost difference can be substantial. I recently bought some new Pella wood vinyl-clad from Lowes. Lowes carries the next one down from the top, and is cheaper than a regular Pella store. also, if you can get a stock size, that will be cheaper still....See MoreWindow: Casement vs. Double Hung
Comments (17)My 1926 house has a mix that is orginial to the house (love wavy glass). The living room, breakfast nook and dining room all have casement. The kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms have double hung (and the other bathroom has frosted glass slats that open and close). So I don't see casements as modern nor do I see a mix as necessarily a problem. That said if the whole rest of your house has double hung, I would probably go with that. In my house there's a kind of logic to the differences--"public" spaces at the front of the house have casement, "private" spaces at the back have double hung. Just one different seems like it might stand out more in a not so great way....See MoreSingle versus Double Hung Windows?
Comments (3)There is likely no energy difference between the two styles although sometimes there is less air infiltration in a single hung. As someone who has had double hung on many houses, they are more of a pain than anything else. Who really opens the top? Not me and I live in the South. The top occasionally falls when you open the bottom making it difficult for shorter people to close. But - screens on a single hung are just on the bottom of the window. I find this "look" to be less than ideal. Now if you aren't planning on putting screens in the windows, then it doesn't matter....See MorePros and Cons of 3-Wide Operator Units vs Single Hung Windows
Comments (41)The great thing is that a house can have nice big windows and still be well-insulated because of improvements in window design and, more importantly, glass technology. On the flip side, one must be careful to select windows with the appropriate thermal characteristics that consider the location of the house and positions of the windows. One can turn a well-insulated house into a furnace by installing south- or west-facing windows that don't handle solar heat gain properly. I've read that super-efficient houses in even cold climates can become overheated by their west-facing windows....See Moreekoreilly
