Very Small Wedding was beautiful

The wedding took place last Saturday evening. Everything went off without a hitch except for the ceremony which we can honestly laugh about. The bride has a 3-year-old daughter who had been staying with me for a couple of months before the wedding. She was the flower girl and had practiced her role and was excited about the wedding and her part in it. Anyways, the moment the ceremony started, she began to cry and wouldn't stop. The bride, groom, bridesmaid, me and her grandfather kept trying to console her during the ceremony to no avail so the judge suggested that the ceremony be started again. We did that and the bride's 25-year-old sibling very happily took over as the flower girl. My granddaughter was quiet during the second ceremony and threw flowers at the end after they were married. We have it all on tape and it really is amusing.

The caterer put out vegetable and cheese trays as appetizers. We added a platter of fancy chocolate-type biscuits from Costco along with the wine. This all went over very well.

The meal was buffet-style which caught me by surprise when the caterer told me this a few days before the wedding. But in the end, the leftovers were able to come home because of it instead of being thrown out. There was bread and butter, a Caesar salad, chicken breasts, fettucine alfredo and red mashed potatoes. It probably sounds like a weird mix but it actually worked out quite well.

The cake was absolutely beautiful and also tasted wonderful. We served a chocolate cake, pumpkin pie and a cookie platter as well. Very little of the chocolate cake and pie were eaten at the wedding but enjoyed here at my house over the next few days.

The flowers were also well done and I'm glad I didn't go overboard. As it was, I probably could have done with one large bouquet at the altar instead of two.

I would highly recommend the place we had the wedding at. It was the perfect size for the number of guests. And it was very nice to have a fireplace going throughout the evening. I didn't worry about the chair covers and it made absolutely no difference to anyone. We were lucky that my dd's best friend came in for the wedding and helped set up the place. I keep telling her that she should do this for a living because she has such a knack for it.

I am glad that we hired a caterer. You were right that it would have taken me away from the evening. He also served all the drinks. I had purchased 14 bottles of wine and ended up using 11 bottles. There were also various soft drinks and sparking grape juices.

My son had had an elaborate wedding with over 100 people. It had cost a small fortune. My dd's wedding didn't cost too much and now that I've experienced both, I see no reason to spend tons of money on a wedding unless there really are a lot of people to invite.

The (first) wedding ceremony started at 6:00 pm and the wedding ended early at 10:30 pm. The bride and groom were tired and it just seemed like the right time to call it a night.

It sounds like a really lovely, lovely evening. So relaxing, and such a truly "social" event.

Poor little kid--she'll hate that video when she's older.

But my theory is, you've got to have SOMETHING go wrong, if only so you have a good story to tell. Your DD and DSIL have a nice one, now. W/ the added benefit that it'll embarrass their daughter, which can be useful sometimes, LOL!

Congratulations! It sounds like a lovely event, down to earth and very personal. Buffets are very popular in my area, not only because they are easier on everyone, but because you don't waste food, as you discovered.

Hooray! So many problems solved! My man's daughter showed up with fund-raising (racketeering) magazines & look what they have for $13 a set! I got a ruler out & did a to-scale sketch & all that other math. Now, not only do I get the pleasure of spending his paycheck, but I also get to start up some baby bonsai! I am an ukiyo-e printmaker & love making very small things so these babies are right up my alley. I still want a rosemary & thyme bonsai but there is a crab apple tree in my apartment complex & I'm literally a 15 minute walk from the lovely NW Oregon forest... cutting paradise. I'm sure there are moss fanatics around here so I'm hoping someone knows what I mean when I say tardigrade garden!!! Always wanted to make one! Loving your ideas & insights! My Dad has a cactus -the breed escapes me at the moment- that has been in the family for almost 40 years; I've got a piece with my name on it & I will definitely be succulent shopping soon.

I vote for the post wedding gala. You can go as fancy as you want, and it may give you, your daughter and SIL a chance to invite a lot of people to meet the young couple. It could be as simple as an open house on a weekend afternoon, or a garden party, or even as casual as a BBQ in the yard if the weather is nice in your area in the fall. Some people will bring gifts if you call it a reception. But this kind of party is so very common with weddings that were kept small or weddings that occurred at a great distance that no one should feel slighted. Our daughter was engaged to (and later married) a young man from the deep south, and so they were feted at a Christmas week engagement party scheduled so that his friends home for the holidays could also attend. In this small college town, a large group of adults/parents tend to co host the engagement parties, and the traditional and only gift to the couple is toasting goblets for their wedding day. In my daughter's case, I believe 13 couples co-hosted the gala that was held in the university president's home that was beautifully decorated for the holidays. The couples are friends and just put one on for anyone in their circle when the occasion calls for it. It was nice because my daughter had not met any of their hometown friends. I had not heard of engagement parties being given in our area, but I think it is a lovely idea, especially when one of the couple did not grow up in the community. It seems like most anything goes these days, but I would be concerned with having a party for people who are not invited to the wedding prior to the wedding.

I'm not sure how it's adding stress, since you're not really doing anything--your particular part in the proceedings is quite small. And since you made it "VERY clear" that you didn't want to and couldn't help with anything extra. Stop caring about it, and it won't stress you. It's true that her planning her own shower isn't kosher, but it certainly didn't hurt you--it didn't take any time; there was no research to do, decisions to make or checks to write.What do *you* care about her knowledge of etiquette? It doesn't particularly reflect on you; you didn't raise her. She's not even your sister; she's your SIL-to-be. And, you said you didn't konw much about weddings, and "aren't the type to jump in and take over or anything," so she apparently took you at your word. Maybe she figured it would be less stress, or less rude, than hinting that she'd like you to offer (because she couldn't, in good manners, TELL you she'd like you to make sure she got a bridal shower--you'd have had to offer it spontaneously). It'll be the easiest, and cheapest, shower you ever co-hosted. Sort of too bad that she added your name to the invite without consulting w/ you, but since no one has actually called you to RSVP, it's not like it's affecting your actual life. And if they do call, just e-mail her and tell her the name of that person, and what they said. Then stop thinking about it. Get your dress, and show up at the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. That's about it. None of the other plans do you NEED to know about, particularly. Why should you know anything about the flowers, the caterer, the officiant, the music, the invites, the readings, the menu? It's not your wedding, you won't pay for or arrange these things. You'll essentially be a slightly glorified guest. Why is that particularly stressful? It seems to me the only thing you have any particular need to stress over is the pots for the shower. E-mail and tell her you haven't started, bcs you don't know what she wants, and you hope she'll come up with another plan, since she didn't respond w/ info soon enough for you to tackle it. The only person who has an actual obligation beyond getting the attire and showing up is your husband. He's the groom's brother as well as best man, and he should be in on the planning of the backelor party. If he doesn't realize this, remind him. Tell him he could seriously hurt his brother's feelings if he is passive on this issue. Then stop thinking about it. Good luck!

My small family wedding is going to be just that - small and immediate family only, in my future in-laws back yard. Mine will be smaller than yours though - 12 people, tops, including the officient. ;-) Mine is casual, wedding at 11am, lunch after for the attendees, and that's it, no reception or anything either - very laid back and relaxed. Personally, I think I'd get the wedding over with first, and then do a late dinner and cake. Then there wouldn't be a "break" in the festivities, and you won't have to "switch gears" from dinner to getting married. Were you going to have a dance afterwards anyways? If not, then don't worry about it, just leave it out. If so, then by all means, have your first dance. I would definately forgo the tosses and such...you don't need replacements, just leave them out. You're going to be very pregnant - I really think I'd make things as simple as possible for yourself, and just leave out the things that don't seem to have a place. Going with your original plan, just have your dinner, get married, then have cake, and dismiss everyone - you are going to be *exhausted* by then anyways even just with that few things, and you need to take care of yourself. :-) One thing you *should* do though is send announcements out afterwards to all who weren't invited...that's what I'm going to do to "smooth over" some ruffled feathers (people who aren't invited) and inform people of new names, addresses, phone numbers, etc... Good luck - I'm sure it will all turn out just lovely. :-)

When I was married, my 2-year-old sister, who was my flower girl, became spooked by all the excitement and refused to walk down the aisle. She bolted down the hallway and my brother had to rescue her as I & my step-father walked down the aisle without her.

So now, thirty-one years later, my now-33-year-old baby sister wants DH & I to do a "vow renewal" service so that she can be the flower girl again and get it right this time! LOL
