Your Recommendations on good Honeymoon Spots

Hi All!

I am getting married December .2004. My fiance' and I are trying to find a place to go for our honeymoon. I am looking for a spot that is warmer than where we live (New England) and safe (crime wise). I would like to find a place that is maybe a little rural, but also has good shopping and eating areas nearby. Any advice is very much welcomed. Thank You!

The smokey mountains can be really lovely. You could rent a cabin for a week (or however long you wish to stay). It could be very secluded or in a cluster of cabins. Gatlinburg has many restaurants and shops- lots to see and do. I'm not sure how warm it will be there in December though.

Not much warmer but very rural with all the amenities you could ask for, The Poconos, Caesar's Poconos Resorts. My husband and I honeymooned there in May and had a lovely time! The lake is gorgeous...well the whole view is just splendid! They have winter activities too, according to their brochures and advertising.

party_music50, I did in no way mean to offend you. I would never intentionally do a thing like that to anyone (unless provoked or bullied), I often reply to gardening problems in broader terms for those on here who are lurking newbie gardeners. Sorry that you took my sincere suggestions to be condescending. I don't know you, so how could I possibly know what you do or do not know about gardening based upon what you posted? . As for my suggestion of adding sand AND composted manure and leaves....I explained the mixture. It USED to be common practice and was suggested in all the "old" gardening books. (lol) Has always worked well for me And as for my plant suggestions, I guess I missed the part where you mentioned plants already growing there.. luckygal pretty much restated (but much better) the same things I said about amending your soil (minus my adding the sand suggestion -ahem!) , . Our suggestions were in response to your comment that the soil was now clay and alkaline because of the foundation work you had done, so we naturally were just suggesting that you amend it so as to broaden your plant possibilities. We meant no harm. However, if there is a problem with water damaging your foundation, then perhaps cactus and rocks would be in order. They wouldn't mind the alkaline soil, hot southern sun exposure, and you wouldn't have to water them at all!

Good spot for a row of peonies?

My only concern is the amount of sun. Peonies,like Roses, bloom best with "full" sun. Tree peonies will do fine with less sun but the space looks a little cramped for them. Any herbaceous peonies are Ok. Work the soil up down to two feet and dig in lots of compost. Space your peonies four feet apart when planting to allow for air circulation and avoid disease problems as they fill the space. The one complaint with peonies is they do not rebloom, but do remain green and attractive through the summer. Plant them high enough so you can see the buds for next years growth through the winter. Too deep and they might not ever bloom. Depending on the plant you start with they may not bloom for a year or two, even if you do everything right. Al

Actually I never had any devastating disease problems with my plants. Most of the plants I lost (and these were no more than only a few dozens over the past 4 years) during the winter months because I wasn't able to provide adequate conditions - lack of space, poor ventilation, not enough light... Avoiding these and generally working on prevention had saved me from any real trouble so far. The reason I have asked for a book was to have a quick and easy reference to help me to identify some problems that I can't currently relate to anything particular. It is far more efficient to look at some description and photos to identify a problem and if needed to dig further do discover all possible reasons, instead of taking pictures by myself, posting to forums and asking questions that have being answered hundreds of times probably. For example I have Lagerstroemia indica plants and some of them are having some warts on their leaves as if the leaf is dusted with salt or more correctly like if salt crystals are protruding through their epidermis or maybe like some cysts filled with liquid, it is hard for me to describe it. Obviously I am lacking a basic knowledge in this area. I had troubles with all possible pests on my Clianthus puniceus plants and I am tired of babying them so I am about do discontinue them. They are not dying, but are losing their good appearance and hardly ever get to flower. They are looking good enough for sale just for a short periods of time after intensive treatments with quite poisonous chemicals against spider mites, heavy pruning and heavy feeding to develop some new foliage... I have some Aristolochias that show some browning of the lower leaves that I cant identify. Nutritional deficiency related problems is another topic I need to know more about. Otherwise everything grows as vigorously as it can, making my greenhouse to look ridiculously small... again.... :) Currently I am growing more than 250 species of plants with widely varying cultural requirements - carnivorous, succulents, bulbs, shrubs, vines from all around the world. I am slowly heading to reducing this number and some specialization, but I will always want to try some new plant so it is unlikely that the number will drop significantly. Compared to my tiny space and not so good location this number is big.

I would talk to a shop or the manufacturer. They knew exactly what the issue was (mine was dribbling out the sides during the brewing and was the brew head gasket). It could be as simple as a water rinse/drain tube has come loose and isn't putting the water int he right place. I would also call to make sure they service your brand of machine. I just searched their website and came up empty. I'm not familiar with the name, but Ascaso isn't listed in their brands either (is that the model, not the brand?). I would expect the service plus shipping both ways to run $150-$200. I think I paid about $125 for the service and return shipping and about $25-35 to ship it up there. I know I shipped a KA mixer for $30-35 and it can't' be worse than that. For that price and a week to two weeks turn around time, you should get a machine that has been cleaned and completely checked out, any worn gaskets, seals, connectors, etc. replaced. Did you see the two cons on the Seattle Coffee Gear website? Doesn't sound like you are having an issue with the steamer, but the second issue has to do with the boiler. That would likely be a more expensive repair or replacement issue -- but I doubt that's your problem because you seem to be getting through the brew okay. Thank you for your replies! They are great ideas! Vermont has come across the list of places we'd like to go. Even though it isn't warm or far away it does have skiing, which we love to do. Any ideas for Vermont? Thanks!

Stowe, Vermont. Great skiing, lots of shops and restaurants, and many places to stay. If you want to spend a bit, you can stay at the Trapp Family Lodge - the family from "Sound of Music" founded it, and I believe that someone from the family still runs it. The lodge also has timeshare cabins that can be rented.

What about Niagara Falls? In December and January the Canadian side has a "Festival of Lights" which is spectacular. The entire city is decked out in christmas lights. Quite lovely. Plus they recently opened up the new casino. The falls are a sight in the winter, especially if it's snowing. Lots of activities on Clifton Hill. There are some ski slopes not too far from the falls as well.

DH and I spent our honeymoon in Napa and Sonoma Valley. We visited wineries, took a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards, and had dinner on the Wine Train. I highly recommend it.

I'm originally from Tennessee, and the Smokey Mountains are really beautiful in the Fall, however it gets pretty cold there in the winter even though it is quite pretty at that time also. The only think about Tennessee at that time of year is that they do not get a lot snow but they get a lot of "black ice". Galtinburg has some lovely chalets and cabins and lots of honeymoon packages. I sent my Son and his wife there for a week after their wedding and they had a wonderful time. Also Pigeon Forge is just a few miles down the road and there is a lot of shopping and restaurants in that area.
