dinner music...

during dinner at my reception, i plan to play a collection of beautiful love songs from the forties... (i love forties music). i was inspired after i watched the movie 'The Notebook' but i don't really know much about music from that era. anyone have any suggestions of good songs to play or artists to look into? i kind of wanted softer music to be playing during dinner and we're going to move to more modern music when it comes time to dance... any ideas anyone?

Think of all the songs from the Big Band Era. I am sure there is a site someone will refer you to so that you can check on dates of songs. Look at late night TV commercials for collections from the '30s and 40's.

I think Linda Ronstadt did an album of 40's music several years ago...and yes, it was an *album*, not a CD, which tells you how long ago it was.

Anyway, if I remember correctly, it was quite a nice compilation of Big Band standards. I'll see if I can find more info on it.

DH and I also celebrated our 10th anniversary in NYC - many years ago. We try to get to NYC either early spring or late fall every year. There are so many great restaurants as well as music, theatre - something for everyone. Personal favorites: Gramercy Tavern - elegant but not stuffy - great unusual menu using seasonal ingredients. Yummy cocktails. Baldoria (Frank Pellegrino's *Rao's Restaurant* son's restaurant) - italian restaurant with live dinner music on Fri/Sat nites. Lots of personal attention without hovering. Raw bar as well. Be sure to make reservation for upstairs seating if possible. If you can't go to Rao's, go to Baldoria. Rao's has approx. 10 tables and is heavily celebrity booked. If you have time for a lunch, try Hudson Hotel's "cafeteria". Excellent food, inside and alfresco dining. We always stay at the Hudson Hotel and have had many lunches as well as dinners in the hotel. Worth a visit just to see this unique hotel. Marvelous. The possibilities are endless. Buy a Zagat's NYC - great source for restaurants. Unfortunately, the restaurant business in NYC is a very competitive one, so new restaurants pop up. I have found that Zagat's has been very reliable. At this early hour, those are what come to my fuzzy brain. I am anxious to see what others suggest! Happy Anniversary and have a wonderful time.

Thanks for the additional ideas! The caterer tells me that we shouldn't use the "horse stalls" to house the buffet stations (will restrict the line flow too much), so those areas will be open for us to decorate as well. I'm definitely going to keep searching out horse items - harness collars and hames as mentioned above would very cool! Also love the idea to use grapevine in the mix. And those articulated horses ... Yes, I'm definitely going to be ordering several of those guys! Annie, I'm unable to open the link (blocked from work computer), but the place card holders sound quite pricey from your description, so maybe it's for the best. ;-D

Well, arbitrary decisions have to be made. There is real competition at all price points, however, in order to survive in the marketplace all products need to be reasonably well made. You have infinite options- Stainless steel (hard to clean) or porcelain enamel (chips)? And the different suppliers differentiate by dong their 'thing': Wolf, red knobs and stacked burners, Thermadore - star shaped burners; Kitchen Aid, not a Ferrari but nothing to sneeze at and well made. Bosch, Etlectrolux, GE, Jenn Air, they are all fine. Natural gas cook tops are based on 100 year old technology. (not entirely true but kind of true.) You will be fine. Do not buy garbage. Get something that will not be out of style tomorrow. Not a sin to save money and buying a brand new scratch and dent etc.

We are making stuffed mushrooms, dates filled with cream cheese and wrapped with bacon, meatballs, artichoke spinach jalapeño dip, cheeses, scones, bruschetta, etc. Two of the family's friends are helping us tonight. The mother's cooking club are bringing food too, so we just have to provide the minimum. My neighborhood has about 17 "Little Free Libraries". You know what those are? People put these little boxes with glass front doors in their front yard. You put books and anyone passing by can take those books. Yesterday I went to all of those houses and dropped off a poem that he wrote, and asked them to post it in their little free libraries for a week starting tomorrow. It will be a small tribute from their neighbors. This is the poem: I am from rain jackets, from wool Pendelton sweaters and the never ending rain. I am from the steep grassy lawn in front of my house, soft, covered in leaves and still wet from yesterday’s downpour I am from towering Fir trees, the moss growing on river rocks in the spring. I am from football Sundays and overly sarcastic humor, from Dustin and Mary and John I am from the opportunistic deal finders and the give-it your-all’s From extra credit is mandatory and explore all your options I am from Our father who art in heaven most Sundays until I got busy with high school I’m from Portland and Slovenian Clevelanders, almond roca and pickled dilly beans. From my Grandpa’s tours in Korea to the four years my parents lived in Japan to the 12 years of Japanese language my siblings and I studied. I am from the countless scrapbooks, family trees and paper that sit in our bookshelves at home. My family’s lives, history, traditions and most importantly the times spent together are captured in those pictures and lines of text sitting on the shelves. I don't fully understand why I have gotten so drawn into this. I didn't know the family, although it is a small world, we have some common friends, and they live only a few blocks from me. I think it is partly because he was a smiling, happy, musical, athletic boy, with long hair, very much like my son, and they were both freshmen in college. It turns out that we are hosting a coffee with a candidate for Secretary of State, on Sunday 11/3. Campaigns are starting for the 2020 state and local elections, so we will be throwing various "house parties" in the coming months. Might as well get in practice now, eh?

Okay...just checked on the Linda Rondstadt Big Band music. The one I was remembering -- her first, I think -- was "What's New". But she evidently did two more Big Band albums/CD's. They are "Lush Life" and "For Sentimental Reason". Amazon has all three. Nelson Riddle's orchestra is on all three.

Preferences in music can be so varied...

Perhaps if you tell us the names of the four songs you have found that you like, that would give us an idea of your taste in music, and the style you are looking for (dreamy vs. peppy vs. boogy, etc.)

Try Glenn Miller- somthing like String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade, etc; Benny Goodman- Anything For You, Taking a Chance on Love etc; Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey.... depends on if you're looking for "Love" type titles or a style of music.

When I was looking for music for my parent's 50th wedding anniversary in 1999, I went to the time-life website to find out which songs were most popular in that era. Also, you can hear a portion of the song you've chosen.

I'd imagine you can burn your own CD's now, but back at that time I found some CD's and that's what we played as soft background music during dinner. I gave my parents the CD's afterwards and they loved hearing "their era music".

I also forgot to mention www.musicchoice.com! They play songs on DishTV. You can look under Big Bands & Swing, plus a ton of other catagories like ShowTunes, Singers & Standards etc.

Benny Goodman's probably too early--his career started in the 1920s, reached its peak in 1938, and had begun to fade in the '40s.

Linda Ronstadt's 40's songs are great, but definitely in the sad category, lots of unrequited love, etc. I don't think it would produce the mood you are looking for.
