Third world problems in the first world
Comments (10)I'll play devils advocate - When adult children take advantage of their elderly parents however that may be defined, I do wonder what kind of an upbringing did they have - were the children given love and guidance or were they neglected in some way, were the parents themselves neglectful and/or did they abuse alcohol or drugs. Some elderly parents become verbally abusive as they age and become unpleasant to be around and their adult children may not have the knowledge or emotional stamina to deal with that situation on an on-going basis. Let's not put all the blame on the adult children. Stealing SS checks and starving people tells a good story but I hope that it is a minute part of the population where that occurs. Nursing home abuse is a different category. It is really hard to find a good one that doesn't cost a fortune and with government funding cut-backs for everything over the last decade elderly care has suffered. With us baby boomers coming into that age it is only going to become worse. The only person I can count on to take care of me is me. My DH and I figured that out years ago and all our financial planning is geared to that situation. Even the OP's post, I'm only reading one side of the story....See MoreThird world problems...outlet/switch color...white or cream?
Comments (19)I have no problem with outlets blending in, but I guess I will go contrary to everyone and say that I have no problem with popping the wall switches and back plates off the wall color a little. After all most rooms only have one or two, or have them all grouped together. A little contrast makes it easier to find the things in dimly lit or dark conditions. Don't use the paintable switch plate covers unless you get the type that are clear plastic and painted on the back side. Usuing your wall color typically means flat or eggshell paint, and you will be cursing yourself every time you have to clean them. There are always going to be wall fixtures that perform specific functions and aren't going to blend in no matter how you try. Examples include smoke detectors and security sensors. Place them as inconspicuously as possible and I promise that no one, including yourself will ever be bothered by them....See MoreOkna Windows vs Window World
Comments (5)Okna is a much better window than Window World and its superior in every way. Window World is made for the budget minded consumer. FYI- window world do not make their own windows, they are made by MI Windows and some may still be made by Alside both of which are not known for making good / quality windows. Why do homeowners sometimes choose Window World? Because they are cheap and they only care about cost and not quality. Okna on the other hand is known for quality, looks, and having some of the best efficiency numbers in the industry. The Okna 500 is a very good window, however if you could see the Okna 600 “ eco pro”, you would really like it....See MoreBlack exterior white interior window world windows
Comments (12)We got one other bid that was much higher through a glass company that out sourced so we would be paying the contractor markup. They did not have a sample to see, but they were highly ranked and reviewed and had many photos. They just took all photos straight on so you couldn't see this. Unfortunately paint isn't a great option on vinyl. I'm not sure what is different about how they do it in the factory but in the field it is hard. Overall I think we're stuck unless we want to replace them all. I'm just telling everyone to avoid Window World- absolute worst contractor we dealt with on this project and we completely gutted the house so we dealt with a lot of different businesses....See Moremac123
