Dating a single dad - any advice?

Hi everyone,

I have been going out with a single dad for the last couple of months. His daughter is four, and lives with her mother and her partner a day's drive away by car.

It is great to find this forum and see some of the advice given. But I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me.

My boyfriend misses his daughter terribly and he can only see her every second weekend. Because I haven't had a child yet I know I can't understand this pain. But I'd like to know how to help him when he feels sad (if that is possible?) He is a great father

Any advice? Or general advice?

Been here, done this, and FWIW there isn't much you can do about the situation. He's going to miss his girl and that's that. You can try to cheer him like you would any other person who is feeling badly, but its'a BIG hurt that won't go away no matter what you do. I get it, and our kids only live 5 minutes away and we see them a lot.

Be prepared though, that you will be going through this a lot if you wish to continue the relationship--and it doesn't usually get better--just becomes something you deal with.

I've been dating a single dad for just over a year now, his 5.5 y.o. son and ex live about 3 hours away. My BF has had to go through some nasty (and is still somewhat going through) custody issues and now finally has access to his son's medical, school and other official records, is one of the emergency contacts for his son, and is *supposed* to get him one weekend a month. So thank your lucky stars that you don't have to deal with a psycho ex (i'm assuming she's not crazy, since you didn't mention her and the visitation seems to go smoothly). Trust me, having a SO's ex who hates him and is jealous of you is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
That said, it's still a difficult situation whenever there are kids involved. Realize that his daughter is the most important thing in his life. You're important too (he wouldn't be dating you otherwise), but she comes first. Sounds like an obvious, but sometimes it's hard to remember that when your weekend plans get cancelled for the bazillionth time because his kid is unexpectedly coming over. I love my BF's son and truly enjoy spending time with him (and vice versa), but sometimes it's just plain hard putting myself second.
Also, don't force a relationship with his daughter. This one was hard for me since BF and I live together and I LOVE kids. Kids need time to develop their own relationship with you and you're never going to be her mother, even if you and BF get married. Do stuff with her, have fun together, be someone she can grow to care about, but don't try and rush things or replace anyone in her life.
Talk with your BF about your role in his daughter's life. Make sure you're both clear on boundaries, with each other and her. I live with my BF, so my relationship is more of a stepmom relationship than you might have, but you have to know if he's comfortable with you telling his daughter "no" when she does something wrong, and if you're comfortable with it. The big thing is just to communicate and be on the same page with him where the kids are concerned.
Dating my BF is one of the best things that ever happened to me and I wouldn't trade our little family for anything (although, I might send his ex to Kazakhstan or something). It is hard sometimes trying to balance our relationship with his relationship to his son and trying to figure out where exactly I fit in, but trust your instincts and TALK about anything you're not sure about with your BF. It's a lot of fun having a kid around!

ur welcome... tuff to do, but hang in there. The group therapy might help. If Dad isn't contacting your child, that might be a good thing in having an ability to keep the disappointments to a minimum. Don't make promises for him - keep things on a "last-minute" basis -even though you know about it. It will be a good surprise if it comes to fruition. Sooner or later, your child will realize the truth and make decisions on where his love comes from. Just prepare yourself for backlash on that one. The anger may come out in all ways - even blaming you. Just remain close to your chile and it will probably be OK. I was never angry with my Mom. But the chaos paralyzed my success. I'm OK, and always have been, but I know that home would have been more settled without the worry and frustration, and anger. BUT, there are wonderful stories out there - kids are resilient. Many times they try harder to equalize their situation. Your child has YOU to help get through this. You have to deal with your hurt and pain - that's the most important thing. As stargazzer said, it may be something you have to swallow so you can emotionally move away from the situationon. You can't worry about what you can't control. You have a lot you can control - the love in your home for one. We all have a cross or two and I really believe you can carry this one with that love. Just think of it as one huge vitamin pill - LOL!! You will feel great at the end of the day.

It sounds like you're in for some serious decision making. I'm 24 married to a 36 year old with 2 kids (7 and 5) We've been married for 2+ years and lived together for a year and a half before that (I had just turned 20 when we moved in together. Vivian is completely right when she says that is extremely hard to be a step parent. I was ready to take on 2, so perhaps you are ready as well...however, remember that you would have been younger than the oldest child is, when she was born...There will likely be some 'issues' related to that...also if he's anticipating losing contact with his kids if he introduces you, you need to understand that that could last a lot longer than a "couple of months". When My DH's ex figgured out that I was a 'permanent fixture' in DH's life, she completely cut him off from all contact with his kids. (It's been 3.5 YEARS). If your bf's ex decides to take this stance, there is nothing you can do to stop her...she will drain all your (or his) money with court costs and lawyers fees. She will break his heart, and he will mourn his children everyday for as long as she choses not to let him see them. She will smear his name, and try to wreck his credibility by phoning his employers or customers, and having the police phone his employers. She will file complaints with the police for no reason, except to be miserable. If she can, she will even get him charged with criminal acts. Even if she never takes it to that extreme, you need to understand that even though they may be divorced, if you live with/marry him, you will be 'married' to her as well for likely the next 15 years (until the youngest is 21). Like it or not, she will have the power to wreck his mood, or change your plans with a single phone call. (And she will, just because she can.) Are you prepared to deal with that? If your bf has already told you that his kids will always come first, you need to decide if you're really prepared for that as well. You need to seriously think of all the implications of that statement. (Read the other posts on this forum). For me, it has been the right decision. DH is a truely good man. All the garbage that his ex has put us through, and will continue to put us through, is worth putting up with because of him. However I am second to noone. We agreed on that right at the start. I understand his need to be with his kids and as such have always tried to encourage him in the fight for his kids...(don't worry dear...we don't need to go on holidays...send the cheque to the lawyer) and he knows that I am open to the prospect of having them with us full time (if we ever get the chance). I made a commitment to love them and treat them like my own, and for the brief time when we did get to see them, I did. The commitment we made to each other, to put the other first, was because I believe that if you commit to working on your relationship with your partner, and putting that relationship first, then the kids will benefit because they will be a part of a stable loving relationship. If the kids always come first, and your partner second, then eventually the 'warm fuzzies' will fade and the relationship will break down. The kids will utimately suffer because their world will (once again) be torn apart. They need stability. That stability comes from a happy home (or homes, as the case may be.) (I don't think that you have to take the second place to the kids, but for many it often seems to happen that way.) Just something to think about. For me, it was the right decision (and I was younger than you, though not as many kids). Ultimately, it's your decision, but weigh it seriously. Consider talking with bf and letting him know that if you're going to move in together, you'ld like to get to know the kids first. It's a reasonable request. We moved into a neighborhood of 1960s-70s colonials. One of the many things I liked about our house was the black slate foyer floor. A new friend came by and mentioned that "that slate is really easy to remove" and she had just put new large-format tile in her foyer instead. 12 years later and I still prefer my black slate. The other thing I wouldn't and won't change is the kitchen curtains. The kitchen faces the street and includes a breakfast nook, so we need some curtains, but I don't want to block the view altogether. The house came with cafe curtains, as well as an upper tier of curtains (not a valance) for the larger breakfast nook windows. They are somewhat sheer, maybe translucent is the word, which I like: it's like looking through lightly-frosted glass so I can see if someone is walking by the house without really being able to see who they are. The little ruffle probably dates them the most, but given that they are otherwise plain it's cute. What I'd really like is a toile pattern, but I just can't find a fabric that is translucent, without being "shiny".

Wearing “some kind of foot covering” is not the same as having a steel door between sloshing liquids or pans dropping. To be comparable to a steel door, your foot covering would need to be covering a big part of your leg, not permeable to hot liquids and heat resistant. You would need a steel toe to protect against a heavy pan dropping. A shoe that allows hot liquids to get in would be worse than no shoe at all because it holds hot liquids next to your skin and the burns are worse. Now you may decide that that level of safety is not what you want for some other reason but it is a factor some people will want to consider. “I am much more likely to drop or drip something from the stove - or a microwave oven and there are significantly more dangerous elements for free roaming babies and pets than not having an oven door blocking access :-)” Continuing to follow a rational thought pattern, these are separate issues and would each need to be addressed separately. I would want as many safety precautions as possible, but I worked many years in critical care and saw all the things that people never thought would happen. Just because there are other dangers doesn’t mean that the the door as a barrier is not significant. It’s not like you are limited and can only pick 3 out of 5 dangers to do something about. The point here is to bring this up as an additional consideration to what you said about the ergonomics. People can read the posts and decide what is relevant to their family. Not everyone has to do the same thing.

You asked, "....how to help him when he feels sad", I would suggest you let him feel sad if he wants to. Go about your business. You are not a part of him feeling sad, are you? He is feeling sad because it helps him. You may not understand and that's ok. Just respect the idea that you are not all that he needs. Sometimes we have to spend some time feeling sad about things--some people might stay sad for so long that the world goes by and they're not in it, and that's going beyond healthy sadness.

One of the best things you can do for another person is listen--don't talk, just listen. You don't have to have any answers, and you don't have to agree--just listen. (Being a good listener will also give you the advantage of deciding if you want a particular relationship to advance.)

I suggest you buy a real good book about the stages that children go through. Learn, learn, learn about communicating with a child. Learn, learn, learn and discuss what you learn with the father. This man you are dating may find these kind of discussions very helpful and you will be giving yourself an edge for the future. These kind of discussions will be helpful in many ways--I don't have to elaborate, right?

Lastly, if you just happen to be one of these people who loves a challenge--find another challenge.
