My lovely bride-to-be and I have been discussing various wedding traditions. We have heard why the bride is given away. But there are others that we have been wondering about.

Why is it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding?

Why is it bad luck for the bride to see the wedding rings before the wedding?

And we were also wondering if you guys knew of any other traditions, be they just family traditions, certain religious traditions, or anything else that you would be willing to share with the group.

Our wedding is less than six months away and I just can't wait to make this lovely lady my bride and enjoy the wonderful life together that I know that we will have.

Gardengate,

my wedding is a month away. We are incorporating our moms and dads into the reception, the moms will light the unity candles together with the dads. I think this makes it very special for the two families joining together.

We also decided to face the congregation as we say our vows instead of our backs to the congregation. The guests will see our faces as we say our vows to each other.

Thats our little "twist" on things, have you gotten other ideas?

According to superstition, the groom should never see the bride the eve of their wedding or their marriage will fail. Another story says it dates back to arranged marriages.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue:

Something old refers to wearing something that represents a link with the bride's family and her ancestor's life.
Wearing something new represents good fortune and success in the bride's new life.
Wearing something borrowed, which has already been worn by a happy bride at her wedding, is meant to bring good luck to the marriage.
Wearing something blue dates back to biblical times when the color blue was considered to represent purity and fidelity. Over time this has evolved from wearing blue clothing to wearing a blue band around the bottom of the bride's dress and to modern times where the bride wears a blue or blue trimmed garter.

There are simply hundreds of wedding superstitions we practice and don't even realize it... the ring finger is a superstition, the kiss, bridesmaids and groomsman all dressing alike, actually, every single thing about a traditional wedding is superstitious... all that is truly necessary is going to the courthouse and signing on the dotted line... but it's not near as much fun!

Superstitions are fun to practice before and during the wedding celebrations... as long as you remember they are just superstitions.

OK, here is the recipe I used. I still think I'd cook the filling a bit thicker, so the cake doesn't get so soggy. Apple Stack Cake Vola Barnes Cake: 3 cups flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla Filling: 2 eight oz. packages dried apples\ 5 cups wter 1 cup sugar 1 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground cloves This recipe makes seven 8 inch rounds. Stir together flour, soda & cream of tartar. Cream sugar, shortneing and butter until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Add vanilla, then flour mixture, beating at low speed. Put 1/2 cup of dough into each greased and floured cake pan, as many pans as will fit in your oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes, cool a couple of minutes in the pan then turn out onto racks to cool completely. Simmer apples and water for 45-50 minutes or until apples are very soft. Add sugar and spices and mash the apples. While filling is still hot, stack layers, spreading filling on each layer before adding the next layer. Chill several hours covered. Serves 16 Annie

I have cousins in Manitoba, and this is close to what is normal in their little town. They have the wedding (usually in the morning) at the church, with cake and coffee and punch in the church basement right afterwards. Anybody is welcome to come, it is announced in the church bulletin and I believe in the local paper. The family would host a bbq type late lunch/dinner for the wedding party, people visiting for the wedding, close friends. But is is largely an informal affair, an event intended for family. Sometimes the bride and groom don't even come, as they are busy packing for the honeymoon and having pictures done. The (opened) presents are arranged on a table somewhere in the house for people to view, and will stay there for a week and ANYBODY can come and take a look! The family (usually parents of the bride) are expected to be ready to entertain with tea and cookies for visits during that time. Then later in the evening at a local hall they have a dance with drinks (cash bar), sometimes food comes out later in the evening but it is mostly finger type food, prepared by friends and family kind of pot luck style. You can "pay" to dance with the bride or groom, and the more inventive you can get with an apron or can or something for the money, the better. Note, this is a fun thing, not a money grab LOL. Any wedding presents usually come from friends or family and would have been sent to the house in the weeks before and after the wedding. Almost always household goods like china, crystalware, towels and sheets, and so on. Scissors, I like the way you have it worded in your post! If you think it is too formal for what they have planned, maybe use the word "Joyfully" or something instead of cordially? Dances - note, this is a small Polish/Ukranian community. Not sure if that makes a difference.

As a professional photographer I have had the opportunity to see an entire wedding day and weeks later hear the bride's opinion of the day's flow. Listen to your church coordinator, florist, photographer & other wedding pro's advice. A private, romantic meeting before photographs start actually creates the first of two exciting "reveals". It is an opportunity for the couple to exchange wedding gifts ALONE. It will be the only time you have together the entire day. The second heart-pounding "reveal" moment is walking down the aisle. It will always be a memorable moment for both of you even if you've seen each other earlier. Shorten your photo request list if you insist on doing them after the ceremony. It will take two hours only if you give the photographer a two hour list. Your parents, family & friends are anxious to attend the party, not pose for photos. At this point you are on an adrenaline high yourself & wish you could just pop over to the reception. Now that carefully planned pose list has become an obligatory nuisance. Please do not keep your guests waiting for several hours during a cocktail hour. Yours may not be the only function they are invited to that day. I personally arrived at a reception as a guest, waited an hour and a half for the couple to appear (they had photos at a park after their ceremony) but had to leave for another social event. A reception is the time for the couple to "receive" their guests. Many times I have heard brides say "Oh, they'll entertain each other" in such a flippant manner. Many have such selfish attitudes toward guests: "Those bothersome guests should just drop my gifts by the door & leave me alone". Yes, this is your special day but don't throw social graces out the window.
