Question about something borrowed (wedding tradition)

Does it have to be something the bride wears? I'm in my husband's cousins wedding next weekend. She doesn't have a "something borrowed" and I can't think of anything to loan her. I have 2 diamond necklaces I offered her but she's not wearing a necklace. I have earrings too but she has some already. She has a garter already too.

Any ideas on what I (or anyone else) could loan her?

I dont think it has to be something the bride wears Steph...do you happen to have an old feminine hankie,like a lace one,she could use?

Or a special "lucky" trinket she could tuck into her bra for the day?

Well, the arrangements are already not the "norm" (whatever that is these days). Typically the bride's family hosts the reception. So if you're looking for what the right thing, traditional etiquette-wise, the bride's family by default would be paying for the decorations (because they pay for the reception). For whatever reason that the bride's family isn't hosting the reception and your daughter is, (doesn't matter, as long as all agree), it'd be nice if the bride's family said "well, at least let us pay for the decorations". But since you have offered to pay for the reception, anyway, they may be thinking that that means the whole shebang as it would if that they were doing it. Now, since there is no rehersal dinner that your DD will be paying for, perhaps the better thing would have been to offer to pay herself for the decorations and some other things in order to share in the cost with the bride's family. I'm with the ones who say ignore the (alleged) cost of the dinner. Often others chip in on that stuff anyway. "Tradition" used to be that the bride's parents pay for the wedding so tradition doesn't really apply anymore. I believe that what you should give is what you feel comfortable giving and want to give. You should not feel compelled to give because they chose to spend more than the people who go to a JP or choose to have friends, family and themselves make the food. The gift is totally separate from the affair in the cost respect. Could always go with the idea that 2 people didn't go, and were going to give $25 so they should submit a bill to the couple for $125.00! Seems to me they're a little foolish to not make it clear they want cash gifts. Especially if the story released was true. I think it's a great decision to put the cash that way but why not just put it on the invitations and be done with it? I'm also very against the trinket givers. Some hunk of junk that the giver thinks is cute and "personal" that'll wind up in a closet taking up space that should just be tossed... wouldn't it be better to just send half the amount of cash? Or all of it? Seems to me someone previously married likely has all the trinkets and gadgets they need. Cash is still the classiest gift, the most useful and the one that is most always used and seldom is returned. And no receipt needed to return it and no standing in the return lines are added benefits.

What a lovely tribute to your relationship! It speaks volumes that she would want you to fill this very special role. But IMO, you already have a Very Special Role as MOTB and also a Very Big Job helping her put together the wedding. If you're having the whole traditional shebang, then the MOH also has a pretty big job, and the two jobs together would be enough to drive most women over the edge. In fact either job alone is frequently enough to do the trick! Can you really see yourself throwing her the bachlorette party? And there are ettiquette issues that come into play if you want to throw her a shower. And would the other bridesmaids your daughter's age have as much fun with a 'parent' always around? Just points to consider. But if the wedding isn't going to be one where the above considerations apply, then just relax and enjoy your dual roles.

we were married in las vegas, at the little church of the west...(used to be on the strip, but has been moved) my parents lived there... dd1 eloped amd was married in a friend's lr in seattle (long story, outlaws got bitter over the planned wedding in vegas) ds1 was married in a friend of the bride's family, garden. dd2 had a destination wedding in fl, on a beach...(and boy was it hot in may!) last, ds2 was married in a chapel on the grounds of turn of the century, greenfield village (ford museum here in mi) of them all, (aside from the elopement) i enjoyed the chapel wedding as for the location..it was in october and they all these pumpkins decorated, the leaves on the trees in full color...(didn't care for the reception) dd2's reception was a brunch for 40 who came down to fl...then a bigger buffet a her fil's then apt rec center...both of them were nice. the backyard wedding dinner was good in a tent, but had to fight mosquitos as the night wore on.. 2 other weddings i've attended were in historical buildings (the first mission in san diego, and one at a place called the mariner's (?) chapel in ca (it's made of glass, and overlooks the ocean) we also have a local historical home called the governor's mansion with a gazebo on the grounds that's a fave spot. it really doesn't matter where the wedding is at as long as the bride and groom ar happpy and surrounded by family...i regret to this day i didn't get on the plane with dd1 and say the heck to her outlaws! if money is a consideration, then have a "private" service and no reception...

Perhaps a bracelet? I also thought of a lace hankie like ont gal mentioned. This is strange but, maybe you have a beautiful shade of nail polish she could borrow for her manicure or pedicure.

Thanks so far, for the suggestions.

She is not a hankie kind of person, at all, so while it's a lovely idea, it's not for her.

She doesn't plan on wearing a bra (doesn't need one with her dress type) so tucking something into it won't work.

Her nails will be a french manicure and she's picked a special shade of pink for her and her wedding party, so that won't work either!

Can you borrow her a dollar bill? She could put it anywhere...in her garter, tucked way down in the bouquet?
A bracelet she could tuck in her bouquet or earrings very carefully added to the bouquet?
Borrow her one of those removable tattoos to put on her ankle!

Kalie is using a hanky that was my mothers...it has her maiden name on it. Caryn now has it, so it will be her something old and borrowed. She is having the hanky wrapped around her bouqet of flowers, then a pin that was my grandmothers and I wore on our wedding day, that will be pinned on the hanky.

Not sure where/what she is going to do about the blue...possibly the garter. I see that the new trend is to wear blue shoes for the blue! I don't think so tho! LOL Her dress will be new.

You can get the hankey worked into the handle of the wedding bouquet.

The "something blue" is traditionally a blue bow or ribbon on the bride's garter.

If you do decide to do something with the bride's bouquet, just be sure to get it out of the bouquet before the bride does the bouquet toss!!!!!
