Should I do this or not?

My daughter is getting married and is having an engagement party given by her fiance's parents. My wife and I are not able to go. her mother and I are divorced and she has a stepfather.

Since we cannot go to the engagement party ( we have not met her future in-laws) I suggested that maybe we should send flowers with a nice note. My wife says that it is the grooms parents who have the party and they will probably have flowers already picked out etc. and that we should not send them. What is proper or rather the right thing to do.

I think it would be a wonderful gesture on your part to send flowers. It doesn't matter if the grooms' parents have already ordered flowers for the occassion. You are the father of the Bride. To let your daughter know you are thinking about her and her fiance even though you can not be at the party is so awesome. I'm sure she would appreciate it more than you know. Sorry but your wife is wrong in this cituation. NancyLouise

Sometimes people think it's improper to show up for a dinner party with flowers, as the hostess may already have a centerpiece, etc.
But this is different--you're sending your regrets, and a nice plant or flowers is very thoughtful.

I had that exact pink and brown tile in my last house. I must have tried 10 different decorating schemes in there; the pink is hard to coordinate with. I ended up replacing the vanity and used plain white 4x4 tile on it. That looked okay, and might look okay over your shower surround. A little awkward, but okay. I could also envision just using some sheet formica up there, well caulked; if you want to do something cool, get "boomerang" or some other 50s-inspired pattern and play up the kitsch factor. I discovered that it was going to be a big challenge to replace the bath/shower fixtures (mine were brass, very corroded - ick!). It sounded like I would have to rip out tile to get to the valve and plumbing inner workings, as you can't just pop on new handles and tub spouts very easily. But you can replace the shower head relatively easily. As far as figuring out whether it's structurally sound, I guess I'd go into the crawl space and try to inspect the floor under the tub and toilet. Poke at the wood with a screw driver and see what happens. If you replace your toilet, you'll have a chance to see if any horrors lie underneath - in mine, the subfloor was not in great shape (thanks to a previous owner who liked carpet in her bathrooms :) If you don't see rot, I would guess your bathroom will last a long time. I've read in the New York Times that tile from the 50s was made really strong. (I'm attaching a fun link you've probably already visited, but just in case...) It is a huge design fail to mix irrigation types for the same zone. If your rotors/sprays have output adjustment (ie change nozzles, spray heads) you can mitigate the effects, but it's still a bad idea.

What should i do with my front porch! I need help!

I see a porch on the front of your home and a deck on the side. A porch is a covered shelter in front of an entrance. A deck is an open wooden extension to a house. I was wondering if you wanted to add a deck to the front of your home, or redo the porch and railing. The posts for your porch are load-bearing as far as I can see. They cannot be cut off and capped. But perhaps you want to extend your porch out from under the overhang, in which case that part would be a deck, and you could cap those posts. Because decks are exposed to rain there is a gap left between deck boards so rain can drip through. Most means of hiding the area beneath a deck is therefore open to allow moisture to dissipate and prevent rots. The photo below shows an open horizontal board enclosure and also uses cable railing. You could, though, use the same rock as is on the front of your garage to close in the under deck area as long as sufficient venting is provided. I added this to your existing porch below. This would give visual continuity to the design as well.

Are you planning to send the flowers to your daughter or to her in-laws, the hosts of the party? I would send them to your daughter as a way to let her know that you are thinking about her at that time.

I think it is a GREAT idea to send flowers to the hosts -- not for the party, just for them. You aren't replacing their centerpieces; you're sending them a gift (they can put your flowers in their bedroom if they want) thanking them for giving the party for your child and for inviting you, and telling them you wish you could be there and are thinking of them. A wonderful gesture. In fact, I think it's such a good idea, if I'm ever in that position, I would do it even if we WERE able to attend.

While it is very thoughtful to send flowers, I wonder why you are not going? (Unless you have impending open heart surgery or something.) This is a major event in your daughter's life- she needs all the family support she can get.
