I don't usually drop in over here, but for you, Mike... and the few other regulars here who have been so nice to me in the past, I made an exception. Josh, good to see you, too, of course. :-) I love all the photos... and Josh, that is a lovely flower! I'm glad I got a chance to see it! It's been so long since I've stopped in... that the Den keiki I was gifted with a few years ago finally began its first set of buds. Unfortunately, they shriveled and died before getting a chance to open, but at least I now know the plant is of age and size to bloom. I believe it's simply too dry in the environment I have to offer it, and my husband works with electronics, so a humidifier is not on the menu. It's ok... I'm just happy it's alive and flourishing, and next year I'm sure to get more buds... and I'll be ready with a helping hand of some type... I've got some time to figure it out, and Mike has actually given me some good suggestions. Take care, people... and happy growing!

I know she's well educated, but taking a course at a local college just for the joy of it is one way. I drop back in school every once in awhile to take a course I really am interested in, but couldn't take when I was going there full time toward a degree. So many young people are going back to school to get an edge on the changing job market. I'm talking adults of all ages, they make up about half the class at our local branches. Do something for fun where there is an abundance of men. Flying lessons. Learn to bowl. Join a bicycling group. Take up golf or go to a gym. The upside is lots of good exercise as a fringe benefit. Run for a local office or school board. It's the networking and exposure with other young, vibrant people on a repeated basis. Doing things you sincerely enjoy (or might enjoy) doing.

These are propagated by cuttings taken in summer when new shoots end terminal growth and the terminal leaf has attained full size. Use only the long slender shoots. Use the entire shoot, cut the base off squarely, then make 1 or 2 shallow 1" long lengthwise cuts on the side of the bottom end of the of the cutting just barely touching the wood under the cambium I cut off 1/2 of the end of each leaf. Dip the cutting end in the strongest dosage suggested for rooting compound. (I use liquid). Provide bottom heat in sand and maintain either mist or high humidity. The process can take up to 90 days to get adequate roots. Pot up in fertile potting mix as soon as the roots attain good size and harden off slowly.
