Found some shutters in the trash, and got the skates for a buck!

Thought I'd post em since I haven't been here awhile!

I really like the way you decorated the shutter. The ornaments that look like bread...are they? The skates are icing on the cake...uhh, I mean shutter. Great job!

Thanks for all the sweet comments! Linda, the sock monkey is one of my favs too, as well as the Easter basket. I did it for my son's girlfriend this past Sept., she collects sock monkeys. By far the hardest one has been my son's life sized Fender Strat guitar cake. That one took some time. Calamity, I love Duff, have you seen Cake Boss with Buddy Valastro? I think I like his work even better than Duff's. Sunnyca, yes it's rolled fondant. I make my own from scratch, as well as the frosting and the cake. I'm terrified of Royal Icing, I am going to have to try that one day :)

If there's sand just a few inches down, you're not going to have forked root veggies. Heavy clay would be another story. You haven't told us what kind of topsoil you have, but given how thin it is, I wouldn't remove the sod. Turn it over, dig it in, maybe cover with newspaper before adding material on top, but don't waste it. Finally, what you're adding on top: if you use only compost and leaf mold, it won't make an ideal growing environment. Maybe you want to strip off the sod, dig out remaining topsoil, dump the sod at the bottom, blend in compost with the remaining topsoil and put the mixture on top. That will help make sure the grass is good and dead under there while giving you a soil/compost blend to plant in on top. Might be a lot of work though. When I started my garden I just tilled some compost into the grass with a big riding tiller. The grass fought back in a few spots but only because it was very aggressive fescue. You could just turn the whole thing over and not worry about putting the sod at the bottom.

Thank you very much Bonnie. Yes the knights made chain maille. This is a VERY old craft. I have also made chain malille purses using pop-tops. These are pop-tops that are interlocked and then the panels are crocheted together.

Debby, just beautiful. Such a loving gesture to your friend whom I'm sure will love and treasure this. 40 years ago I made one for my nephew, I started it the day I found out my sister was pregnant. All white and I than weaved white satin ribbon thru the two ends, it was beautiful and very delicate looking. My nephew was christened in it as was his younger brother. Almost 40 years later my sister still has it wrapped in blue tissue. I felt very honored as if you knew my sister..its only the best for her.

I did the painting onthe skates also. The ornaments are made from osnaburg and then I used modge podge and sprinkled them with mica.
I have a craft show in December, so this will hopefully be sold!

I guess I need to start grabbing shutters when I see them at the curb...I love these!! It could be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. If you don't like to paint, you really don't have to. You can add whatever you want on them! Thanks so much for sharing these!

That looks great! I would never have thought to hang the skates on the shutter. Of course, I'd never have been able to paint the skates as wonderfully as you did, so I'd probably be hiding the skates not displaying them.
