Trouble with GM-induced disrespect (long)
So, A__ (FDH's 9 yo son) wasn't allowed to be at GM's house for the past month.
A__ has been very good the last couple weeks, his grounding from fighting was over, and his teacher's comments in his homework book have been very positive for two weeks straight!
Last week I was preparing for my the oral portion of my PhD transfer exam, so FDH didn't offer to take A__ at all during the week (BM never asks him to, she waits for one of us to ask what weeknights she needs us to take A__) Just to be clear, I didn't ask or tell him not to, but I also didn't suggest that he call her. Maybe I should have done what I usually do and encouraged FDH to call BM about the upcoming weeknights, but I didn't.
Anyhow, BM worked a couple doubles, so A__ spent some time at her mom's place last week - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night. Well, sure enough, Tuesday's comments are good and his teacher complimented his homework. Wednesday's comment was "Why isn't A__'s homework done? Please check his book every night". On Thursday they went to the riverbank for a field trip and he wouldn't listen to the group leader, wouldn't apologize, tried to run away and mouthed off to his teacher. There was a note about this incident in Thursdays comments - that A__ had been asked to write an apology letter and pending his behavior on Tuesday's upcoming field trip, may not be allowed to go on any of the June field trips they have planned. The teacher mentioned in Friday's comments that he hasn't put effort into his classwork on Wednesday or Friday.
When I first read the comments, I thought the stuff about the field trip had been written on Thursday, and that BM had seen it. Then A__ told me he was at GM's that night, so I called BM to ask if she knew and what she would like to do (she has asked us to let her know right away about bad feedback in his book) A__ later explained that the comments about the trip had been written on Friday, so GM didn't know about it either.
When I first told BM, I apologized for being the bearer of bad news while she is trying to get ready to go out of town for the weekend, but that I wanted to make sure she knew about this stuff. She said "No, it's good that you called! That's what I want you guys to do! But I'm so upset that he was doing so well, and then I let him go to my mom's for a few days, and he's bad again. He hasn't done his homework and he's being disrespectful again. Arrgh! I don't know what to do!" We then joked that we should hold him upside down by his ankles and dunk him in a dirty toilet, but unfortunately we'd both cleaned our bathrooms that day (LOL!)
I asked what she would like us to do, or if she would like to talk with him, etc. She said to ground him very strictly for the weekend and then whatever we could think of to encourage good behavior on next week's trip.
Our grounding is: No computer, TV, movies, video games or other electronics. No sports. No pop, treats or junk food. No leaving the yard. Books and art are OK. Boardgames and cards are OK. Playing outside is OK (he likes to look at plants and rocks). This is until Monday morning.
He also has to go to bed and do homework etc IMMEDIATELY without stalling or backtalk.
He is still allowed to go to a special event tonight that Papa is taking him to, but no treat food there, and no souvenirs. We said that if Papa hadn't already bought the tickets for a LOT of money, he wouldn't be going.
He wrote out 15 reasons why it is important to listen to teachers, coaches and group leaders (we worked together on this and came up with things like "The leader wants what is best for you, so you don't get hurt" and "Other people can't hear if you're being noisy"). FDH, A__ and I had a HUGE talk about how he should be behaving on his field trip on Tuesday.
In February, A__ and I went to the museum the are going to on Tuesday and he was perfectly behaved the whole time. We talked about how he behaved then, and that we expected that as a minimum standard of behavior for this trip - that he has to be AT LEAST as good, or even better than he was for me.
We talked about the trips that are coming up in June and that he won't be very happy if all his classmates get to go while he has to sit in the library and do extra school work.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this?
I know there's mixed opinions on grounding on this site (I'm of a mixed opinion as well, but BM likes it, and we should try to be consistent with her) but for those of you who take away privileges for bad behavior, what would you have done?
Any thoughts on writing out a list of positive reasons to listen to a teacher or group leader? (We won't let him put things like "it's bad" or "you get in trouble", we're going for the good things like "You'll learn more and have more fun if you listen to what they are saying")
What about our lengthy chat on exactly what we expect on Tuesday's trip? (We talked about examples of being polite, helpful, quiet, listening, following instructions, not running off, not touching things unless told he can, etc)
Should we ask BM to sit down for a meeting about A__'s behavior and create a strategy? She's been very open to talking about A__'s behavior lately, and seems to want us all on the same page. Any advice from those of you who have had a sitdown?
We all (FDH, BM and I) think that GM's house is quite a problem... When we get him from there, he's mouthy, uncontrollable (even if he's had a pill that day), emotional - but he's not like that when we get him from BM's or Papa's. When he's at GM's, he doesn't do his homework or have good hygiene or nutrition, etc. I've noticed that he has lower expectations of himself when he's been at GM's lately (and I think it's because she has low expectations of him).
We were so pleased that he hadn't been there as much lately, and he'd been so good the past few weeks! We probably should have called BM to ask when she had doubles or nights, but I was studying a lot, and to be honest, wasn't up for suggesting extra A__ nights that week. So this is NOT blaming BM for taking A__ to GM's - not at all. This is trying to figure out what to do about last week's behavior and how to prevent the same in the future...
I second BM's well-said "Arrgh!".
