I have two issues first of all I'm Canadian my fiance is American I don't really have any close friends or siblings and he's not close to his family at all it's just going to be my family at the cerimoney (parents g-parents aunts uncles cousins)it's going to be very short in the park across the street from my house I've told them if they want to sit bring a lawn chair my question is do you actually have to have two people "standing up" with you to sign the certificate or can any two people there sign it as witnesses my other problem is I live in a very small town and pretty much the only bakeries in town are in teh supermarkets I've been doing some online research for bakeries in the two closest city's but how do you tell from a website if the place is any good and my fiance's a Marine currently deployed in the little time we'll have together between when he gets home has to report back to base and the wedding I don't want to be waisting 2+ days driving around these two cities from bakery to bakery. I'm having an "open house" style resception with finger foods and my family and I are already making all that a cake on top is just too much.

In the US, it doesn't matter if your witnesses actually stand or not. They only need to be able to witness what you are doing. I'm sure your officiant can tell you if things are different in Canada.

You might ask people you know if they have any recommendations for a bakery. And by all means, feel free to determine your baker without your fiance. He will likely want to spend time with you doing things other than running from one bakery to another. Find a bakery you like. Determine 2-3 cake flavors you particularly like. Write to your fiance and ask him to choose from those flavors. That way, he gets a say, even though he is far away.

Depending upon how far away the bakery is and whether or not they deliver, you might want to reconsider a supermarket cake. It sounds like you live in a fairly rural area and will have your hands more than full on the day of the wedding. The difference in quality might not be worth the difference in stress/effort.

Now is the time to look for a heart decoration to put on top as well as cinnamon hearts to decorate your cupcakes. You will need 3 clear plates or round mirrors with no frames in different sizes from big to small, and a bunch of dollar store wine glasses. The smallest one will hold about 5 cupcakes with your cake topper decoration in the center and they graduate down. The tiered plates rest on the wine glasses.

I'm sure your relatives that are baking wouldn't mind making a dozen cupcakes each and freezing them unfrosted. Supply the cupcake papers so they are all white. They could be different recipies as long as they would go with the cream cheese icing. Gather them up a couple of days before the wedding. Then freeze until the day before Take them out of the freezer and frost them frozen with cream cheese frosting that you buy in a can already made. Decorate with candy hearts and arrange them on your plates.

I cannot tell you how comforting it is to have all your support and advice! Lowspark, I am going to commit your suggested script to memory. It's perfect. However, I have reason to think that I may catch a lucky break and not have to do anything. My closest friend, "Fifi," who, as it goes around here, is sort of organizing all the people who want to help, is working on the Friday night dinner for the out of towners, along with "Kiki," who is hosting it at her house (I know!), and several others. Fifi just told me that AFTER (I checked) I had that conversation with Lulu and Cathy, Cathy sent Fifi an email saying something like "be sure to include us in whatever you're planning for the wedding." The wording wasn't crystal clear, but both Fifi and I got the sense she was speaking for Lulu, too. So that would mean that Fifi and Kiki, who already have 4 others on their "team," would get another 2 pairs of hands and financial contributions for what is really a big job, which I know Fifi appreciates (I hope Kiki does -- Fifi will handle that, bless her). Now, how did I not give "Cathy" a silly name, too? It also means no shower here. I doubt Thing One will care, and they certainly don't need another set of gifts, but FMTO may be disappointed. I doubt she'll be destroyed, though, and in the end she may be glad not to have to plan another trip (I am sure her relatives won't be disappointed not to have to come here twice). If she really, really wants another shower, well -- Thing Two and FMTO's sister both live in Boston, as, I believe, do some of FMTO's friends; maybe they will give her a shower -- I can slip Thing Two some $$ to help. (Yes, they are immediate family, but they are also bridesmaid and MOH, so I suppose that would be okay.) But I am going to keep my big mouth shut about that for now! This certainly is an example of not doing or saying anything until you must -- sometimes the problem changes or even goes away entirely. Glad I didn't say anything to Lulu yet.

If you don't know any better when it comes to paint, then you really aren't missing anything. ...and then there are the people who just don't see it, or get if, if given the opportunity to choose Lexus over Toyota. Really, no one cares. It's paint. The best thing to do is stick with what you know and want and that makes you happy. Or, go experiment and decide for your own self so you can *know* for yourself and ignore all the chatter back-n-forth. I chimed in because I think it's really unfair to painters to lob out there that they are intentionally marking up cans of paint to the point that's been implied. I said painters aren't making a living by being paint resellers. If selling paint was where they could make a living do you think any of them would actually paint? They make a living based on their skills and knowledge. Some are better at their craft than others and it is true that some are better businesspeople. The better craftsmen will quote your job based on how much labor will be involved and how much of their time your job is going to take. Time and work. Not paint. Paint doesn't matter in the grand scheme. I've found the less confident painters, the painters who do lesser amounts of high-end residential, commercial, and industrial work use the margin they get on a gallon to help them win jobs. They make it look like their cost for time and work is less than the next guy by using the delta on whatever margin they may get from the paint stores to help cover their landed costs. The bottom line is no different, folks. You will pay a painter what he's worth plain and simple. It all comes out in the wash -- smaller crews to bigger crews -- small volume guys to the poster child for a brand boys. At the end of the day, you are going to pay what it costs for their particular skillset, their time, their effort. Now, the core of this is client agreeing with the painter about how much the painter's skill, time, and effort are worth -- that's another discussion. If a little monkeying around with the numbers, shifting a few hundred bucks from the time and effort bottom line to somewhere else that isn't itemized out to the last cent makes you feel better and helps them get your job, do ya think it matters to them? Nope. They're going to make sure they are getting paid what they need to cover their overhead. As they should. No one is going to paint for someone and lose money doing it. The painters who are honest, savvy businessmen concerned about their reputation and neighborhood spin often don't monkey with itemized paint quotes. You're going to get a price and as long as you don't step too far outside the box to stuff like Fine Paint of Europe, or Farrow & Ball, or some specialized treatment, or prep, etc., their price for their work is what it's going to cost you to hire a professional painter, not a professional schlepper of paint. Fairness matters. Compare apples to apples and work with real numbers, not arbitrary pulled-out-of-someone's hat numbers.

It is rather typical for parents to become sentimental when kids are off to college, empty nesters and such. When DD was off to college her first year X called me all the time. He has been calling me "just because", at first he called fairly often, it is much less now. Most of the time ex calls from home when his wife is right there. Of course he does not call daily or weekly, that would be bizzare. I always say "say hi to your wife" and she sends me her hellos too. I certainly hope that she is not as preocuupied wiht me as you are with your DH's ex. In fact i am sure his wife doesn't think much about me. We are DD's parents, but that's about it. I certainly do not think my X calls me to cause problems between me and my SO or because he is still hung up on me. LOL i know his wife has no concerns about that. I am pretty sure most women would not want to rekindle anything wiht their exes, can't pay me enough LOL Plus BM is married. I think that your DH is uncomfortable simpy because he knows it makes you worry. i am sometimes uncomfortable if my X calls just because my SO dislikes it. Other than that if your DH would not want her to call and would be that uncomfortable, he would not pick up the phone, simple as that. She calls, he answers, they are in it together. i don't think you have anything to encourage or discourage, he is a grown man. If you suspect he is being hung up on her address it directly wiht him, other than that don't let her live in your head rent free but don't attempt to micromanage. i also wonder what are your relationship with your exhusband, is he is he involved wiht his kids, does he ever talk to you etc. maybe that realtionship is nonexistant and it is hard for you to comprehend that it could be different. My SO hates his X, so it is hard for him to see that others do not hate their exes and actually don't mind talking to them (of course unless BM calls your Dh daily or asks him out, then it is a different story)

Ok, to clarify, my issue is not what their rules are. Its the dont tell or your in trouble policy. This goes back to the inappropriate touching issue. My youngest DD in trouble for telling me that the step-sister had touched her inappropriately. Yes, call it nosey, call it controlling whatever, but when I get the "I'm not supposed to tell" speech that's when I get upset. THere is a history of I'm not supposed to tell stuff that has gone on. Getting in trouble specifically, the girls will figure that part out, and stay under the radar eventually. The kids are not allowed to call the OP and whine about being in trouble. That goes for both houses, so we are on the same page. Even if they did call their dad, I have nothing to hide and will not prevent them from telling their dad they are in trouble. TO KATHLINE, to answer you. Funny because as I was responding back to SM yesterday as she asked me what I thought of her parenting style. My thought was...well on one hand you are too lineant (sp) and then on the other have some really unreasonable strict that's how it is kind of rules. So how do you decribe that parenting style? Two complete opposite sides of the spectrum. She allows the girls to dress like tramps....that's not strict. But then has a rule that step-sisters cant be friends with each others friends. That doesnt make sense to me. They are all close in age and we live in a very small town. Too me...just doesnt make sense. Why can't they all be friends? Not that I'm gonna go discuss this with SM just my thought on the idea. Secondly regarding my son and his older friend. I never said anything while it was going on.... but after the fact, yes reminded him she was the one I warned him about in life before I sent him out on his way into the world. No I do not need to control my son's love life and havent. I will however tell him if I am concerned about something. Sometimes he listens, sometime he doesnt. As in the past I will always be there for him regardless if his choice is one I agreed with or not. He will eventually figure it out and luckily we have that type of relationship we can talk about this kind of stuff. Yes, I have been forced to deal with SM because EXH cannot take care of anything. Sooo this is the only way as parents we have been able to coordinate crap. I realized the other night how angry I actually am with EXH when he wouldnt talk to me. He's letting his wife handle everything, just like he let me handle everything when we were married. So her and I are left to deal with each other. I resent that a little bit I guess because he is still not being responsible for choice making, again! Yes, I do need to make some changes and that is what I am working on and hence the whole reason I put my foot down with SM. It really shouldnt be this difficult EVERY day! I am a very strong woman and for the sake of peacekeeping have turned the other cheek and bit my tongue more than you could imagine, I have tried to build a relationship with this woman which I thought was in the best interest of my children. Instead I have become the mat for her feet wiping and I'm done. Call it controlling if you want. I am taking my space back. Believe me, the less I have to hear from the otherhouse the better. I have a wonderful life right now with my husband, our new baby girl, my job, and my relationship with my kids. Everything else is great! I just have this rash....and it won't go away. So.....this forum is my venting space and I will not engage with her any longer other than one liners. I have too many wonderful things going on in my life to let this black cloud ruin my sunshine.

As Duckie mentioned, in the U.S., anyone who attends the wedding and witnesses the ceremony can sign the marriage license. We are seeing a trend toward not having a wedding party and instead asking parents or grandparents to sign the license.

You don't have to have a wedding cake if you don't need one. I have had clients who served pie, cheesecake, croquembouche, and other desserts. If you don't care about photos of the two of you cutting a special dessert, then don't worry about having one.

Do be sure that you get great photos of the ceremony and open house. Once the day is over, you will have only your photos and your memories, so don't skimp in this area. If you can afford a professional photographer, that will be money well spent. If you can't, then ask several friends to take photos throughout the day.

thanks for all the suggestions problem is I saw a cake on the tv show cake boss and have kinda fallen in love with it so I kind of want it replicated and then I was thinking depending on cost getting a groomscake as a suprise for dohim. We don't really have a set date yet so I can't do much in the way of the cake until he's home and can figure out the when, it might not even be a possability since you have to order them so far ahead of time.

Be aware that the bakery you deal with may well say, "Oh sure we can replicate that cake for you" but in the end your cake is...not that replicated. Ask to see examples of cakes they have actually made to see if their technical expertise is up to it.

Colleenoz makes an excellent point. Ask to see photos and for references and ask about the baker's experience. All bakers are not alike and I have seen some awful cakes the last few months.

Also remember that a fancy wedding cake can run well into several hundred dollars or more than a thousand dollars. I have not seen the cake you mentioned, but expect to pay dearly for a special order that was so fancy as to be featured on a cake competition show.
