Old console TV

What can I do with an old wooden console television after taking out the screen, etc.? Seems a shame to trash the whole thing, thinking of putting shelves inside and making a workbench in garage.

My grandmother had a local guy fit it with shelves and put small louvered doors(I think he used window shutters) stained to match. She uses it to store her dishes. Looks great.

I like the idea of making stuff out of junk - but I agree that putting it back is a horrible idea. They made a bar out of something (old console tv I think) and took it back - complete with keg fridge and tap. It looked neat (a little too gaudy to put in my own home, but it was cool) But all I could think of is what if these people are Baptists (or some other non-drinking religion) or worse, recovering alcoholics?? They know NOTHING about the people and they're spending all this time and money creating something that the people may actually HATE. It'd be better if they sold the new stuff at a flea market and just gave the old owners a snapshot of the new thing.

fllwfan: think your wife will be pleasantly surprised that the need for her talents is always going to be there. While there are many talented DIYers out there, there is an equal number who can't (for a variety of reasons including lack of time, ability, desire, etc) and shouldn't be DIYers (for a variety of reasons including lack of ability, etc. etc.). And even those with a good eye, good color sense, good grasp of design principles oftentimes do need help in pulling it all together. And your wife will have resources available only to the trade - many times that's where the "I'll know it when I see it" items are to be found. I'm a DIYer myself insofar as choosing my paints and doing my own painting, but I'll be using outside help for draperies and appropriately sized furniture. I don't need validation and, for the most part, trust my own skill and instincts. But there are times when paying someone for their expertise can be a bargain in the long run. I spend a lot of time lurking here and on the Landscape Design forum - there's an almost strange disconnect between the amount of attention (and money) paid to detail in a home's interior versus the exterior. The several thousand spent on a sofa is one thing, but spending the same amount for a good landscape design enhancing the entire property would be unthinkable.

Direct TV gave us that dog TV channel free for a month or so. It was amazing. Mia had never ever looked at or paid attention to the TV before. We put it on the channel, she was laying in hubby's lap, and immediately she sat up turned to the TV, ears alert, eyes following the motion and was mesmerized! She would sit there and watch it for long periods. They have different shows I guess, there's play time, exercise time, relaxation time etc. We did not keep it but it was very interesting. It must have had sounds she could hear but we couldn't.

Get rid of all the tchotchkes and then just have a few statement pieces so the piece is just a backdrop. Right now it looks like my grandmother's old place as she never saw a piece of bric a brac or plant that she didn't feel compelled to display :-). The actual piece isn't that bad once you look at just the lines of the piece. You can then get more contemporary pieces that complement it.

That reminds me of when I was like in first grade, we had a TV that they had took the insides out in our classroom and we would get in there and pretend we where on TV. That was like 39 years ago. Hope you figure something out for it. Some of those are really nice cabinets.

You could add a shelf or two, stain them to "match" the outer wood and use it as a book shelf.

My sister found the kind with the doors on the front. Her significant other removed the TV, added a couple shelves and she now uses it as video storage and has her TV sitting on top! Looks very nice, too!

I have a 1956 Motorola that I bought last year. It worked at the guy's house and then I got it home and it never worked! Took it to the shop and the repairman said he couldn't get parts for it.

(Ya Ya - who's gonna read this post with eager interest! LOL)

Found this idea: "Diane turned an old TV cabinet into a liquor bar. She found the piece at (where else?) a yard sale for $2. She covered the screen area with a retro fabric with little martini glasses on it."

A friend of mine converted one of these into a liquor cabinet also. He gutted and added shelves. It had doors on the front, he painted it a high-gloss black with oriental design decoupaged on front.
