staining bamboo furniture

I acquired some cool 1950's bamboo chairs and table in the usual yellowish color with a gloss finish. I would like to stain them a darker (ie mahogany) color.

Has anyone done this to bamboo? Any tips, suggestions, etc? Thanks!

i would imagine you will have to remove the varnish before you could stain so you would def need to sand first...bamboo should take stain with no problems after that...you can also try the wood working section on the forums they might be able to help also...btw nice aquire bamboo is like steel when it comes to furniture

I wonder if you could just do a paint treatment with glaze on it.

I have read that bamboo can be refinished just as any other wood, i.e., just do it the same as you would any other wood. I did an internet search and found a short article, about a year ago. But I never got around to trying it on my own furniture.

Why don't you post this on the paint forum and I am sure one of the experts there will have advice for you. I have a feeling you can stain bamboo and it would look wonderful since they sell bamboo floors in various stains.
