How close do you let your plants get before dividing or moving?
Comments (10)I think I would keep it steady at the stage where the individual plants are just touching each other. I am not quite at that point yet as I only started landscaping my house when I bought it three years ago. I have to mulch because of the climate where I live. Many of the plants that keep their foliage around where you live lose all their foliage here and winter is so long and so cold, I wouldn't be able to get away with not mulching (three inches of pine needles). I, too, would only intervene if they really started to threaten each other, blocking out the sun, root competition, etc. But I already have a plan for when they fill in too much. What I intend to do is to place stepping stones in strategic spots that will allow me to stand on them without stepping on plants and without the neighbourhood being aware of my little jungle path. During the summer, the stepping stones will have potted plants on them, which I will only move when I need to step on the stones. This way, the spot where my stepping stone is is always nicely filled and since there is dense vegetation around it, no one can tell there is actually a pot there. Needless to say, the plants that will be in pots will be those that I would need to bring inside for the winter - this might allow me to have calla lilies, gladioli and lilies of the Nile and show them off, too! You know, have your cake and eat it too? If any of the plants planted directly in the soil take over, I can remove some pots around them to let them roam. Does anybody see a problem with my idea? It sounds pretty good to me, but somebody here might see a problem I didn't think of....See MoreExterior renovation: what would you do if you lived here?
Comments (44)I would not let anyone talk you into leaving that maple where it is. I'm overstating the point to make it so please don't be offended - but it looks ridiculous there. It would be one thing if it were rendered insignificant by other mature trees in the yard, but as it is your major tree, to have it two feet from the foundation is simply absurd. And if your neighbours complain about your insensitivity, ask how much they'd like to contribute to the replacement of your foundation, which will be losing its battle with the tree shortly, or if they're up for going up the ladder to do your quarterly eaves-cleaning (the brain wards are full of people who have fallen off their ladders cleaning their eaves). And offer to buy them a maple just like it (get it identified on the maple forum if you don't know what kind it is) to plant in their own yards. In particular given the work you are planning on the house, you can be entirely excused - the tree will be horridly in the way, and it may even die. A convenient excuse - use it! Do talk to them in advance if you know they feel strongly, but it's your yard, not theirs. Karin L PS, I do like your fake closed window. PPS, I have raised two kids in a house with old siding covered in old peeling paint (and then there is the inside). Neither one is precisely mentally handicapped. I think throwing siding away to protect them from lead is thoroughly misguided. Other reasons to throw it away may be valid, like rotting and the paint won't stay on it (though I quibble with that diagnosis). Not to say you shouldn't do what you have planned, but just to be clear on your reasons. PPPS, if you put the siding for free on craigslist, you might not have to take it to landfill....See MoreBonus cabinet - what do I do with it - lets get creative!
Comments (13)Nope - it was just to give an idea of size/vision. It was from houzz. the bottom pic shows the actual spot - pardon the mess! (now you can see why I was so desperate for a remodel!) My old "cantry" is the long skinny slotted knotty pine door. The rest of that wall where the fridge is, is now gone but that right corner is where the new cabinet will be. It's depth goes to about where my daughter's artwork is hung. The brick facade will be gone and on that wall is going to be chalkboard paint like this (only right on the wall vs/ cabinet): [Contemporary Kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2103) by San Francisco General Contractor Dijeau Poage Construction...See MoreWhat kind of window treatment would you do here?
Comments (23)mtnrdredux - thanks for the pic, that looks great in your room. How was your experience with Smith and Noble, I've never ordered from them but was considering for this treatment. Les - Thanks so much! I like the idea of a wood valance to hide the shade. So the valance should be wide enough to cover the top piece of trip completely? I'm going to discuss this with my husband as I think this will give it a clean look. Thanks for the link Chris. Julie, thanks for the tip, I think it would be so much easier to just take the cranks off or look for a smaller size. They are a pain! springroz - I'm in between the solar shade and the cellular shade. I like the insulation the cellular will give as well. We got all of our romans from jcpenneys and they were very reasonable during one of their big sales. Annie - are your shades bamboo? I would love to see a pic. Jeannie, you place sounds lovely, do you have any previous pics to share? Yaya - your link takes me to JCp's blinds but not sure which one you were referring to. cliffandjoann - thanks for the pics. I love the way the solars let the view shine through. Do you have direct sun through that window? I'm wondering if they do a good job reducing the glare? Thanks everyone! Right now, I'm leaning towards a wood or fabric valance and roll-up solars or the cellular shades. I know the cellulars are great for insulating, how about the solars, any insulating benefits? Also, do the solars reduce the glare or do you think I'll still be squinting once the sun hits this window?...See Morea2gemini
