Bonus cabinet - what do I do with it - lets get creative!

It turns out, I will have an extra spot for a big cabinet that my GC has offered to build whatever type of shelving I want in it. It's long, narrow and fairly shallow. It used to be like a spices and canned good "pantry". It was originally going to be ripped out because it is next to a wall that was removed, but it's in the corner and is apparently acting as a bit of an anchor for the support beam above it. Since it has to stay, my GC says he'll build whatever I want out of it.

So here is my chance for something fun and unexpected. A cool spot that I can show off and say, look what's inside here - isn't that cool! So wht do I do with it? A key and mail clostet? A hidden spot to charge and store cell phones? A broom closet? Broom was otherwise going to go at the top of the stairs down to the basement off the kitchen. Here is similar to the shape/size:

Am i missing something that would be really convenient to have?

I'd go for a broom closet. The easier it is to get out the better in my opinion. From somebody who wishes she had one.

715 rose, your favorite greenhouse man is a wealth of terrible misinformation about Impatiens Downy Mildew. Shame on him. Cold temperatures won't do anything to curtail the spread of this disease. The spores can remain dormant in the soil for years! The onus of the prevention of this disease rests on the shoulders of the growers. They can either stop production, adopt some of the rigorous sanitation and housekeeping practices and/or use some of the new fungicides on the market to control the disease. Sales of I. walleriana are way down in the past couple of years (seeds and plants), which is a great thing! That means that consumers are educating themselves. Reports of disease incidents are down, too. There aren't any new resistant hybrids out there yet, but don't forget 'Sunpatiens ', which comes pretty close to the appearance of their fragile cousins (or half siblings). They can tolerate a fair amount of shade. The new fungicides will probably be left in the hands of the commercial producers, rightfully so. Diseases become resistant to fungicides very quickly, much like human pathogens have due to inappropriate widespread use of antibiotics. Deadly superbugs are the result of that. We need to remember that the spores can travel long distances in the wind and rain, and by animals and insects. We still need to be creative about finding other sources of color for our gardens and containers as often as possible. Those of us whose communities haven't seen this disease as yet need to be prepared. Seeds and plants purchased from your favorite vendors are likely to be the source of introduction one of these days.

I had the plan from my first kd in my hand when I went to DW. I did not like his plan, but he had the dimensions of the space provided to him from the builder, and his plan wasn't "original" since I sat with the builder and "moved this here, that there, etc." before going to see kd1. If you were to take that plan (let's say she had kraftmaid cabinets on it) and go to Home Depot or Lowe's to get a quote for those same cabinets, then it would be very wrong. Of course, the best thing, would be just to take the dimensions of the room with you and start fresh. If you would like to come here to see my Dutch Wood cabinets in my kitchen, just let me know. There is also a company called Oxford Cabinet Shop in Oxford PA. It is Amish run, I believe you call, leave a message, then they call you back. Have only heard excellent things about them--I used to live very close to them. They were a GW favorite for a long time. Not Amish, but 2LittleFishies used a place in Harrisburg--her dreamy yellow custom kitchen is goreous: Gilreath Cabinetry. Maybe they are Amish, but I'm not exactly sure... What a beautiful kitchen! I would definitely consider a custom built-in/on cabinet. Love the idea of the cookbook/mag rack. Maybe combine the two ideas. A rack or two above a counter height slightly deeper open shelf. With a narrow pull-out shelf or two below that is tricked with docking cables. Mine fits my ipad mini and three phones. Not a drawer, just a hidden shelf that slides out. The shelf we use as an in/out spot for mail and a couple note pads, a few pens, keys. Being shallow, it cannot get junky. No room. I do think a kitchen needs a designated 'dumping' ground to sort easily, then it can quickly move on to trash or where it belongs every day or three. Otherwise the kitchen counter gets the 'dumping' and the sorting. I dislike stuff and backpacks and mail on any kitchen counter...though island seating area i don't mind a laptop or newpaper spread out...i just need a place to quickly get it out of the way. If i get home late i need to see what mail came in. (no one is allowed to run off with my NewYorker, lol. I get it first)

Judy, I haven't carefully read all the messages (stuck with old glasses), so I hope I haven't got this wrong. I totally get the commercial ready bakery. If you can do that, great! But would you really want no oven in the main kitchen? Even if you don't anticipate selling your house, things happen and plans change... And is it even allowable by code not to have an oven there? If you don't do the commercial kitchen, I would hesitate to move the baking there. When I'm baking, especially bread, I want wide open spaces. I can prep veg for an army on a 24"x30" counter with no trouble, but one of the reasons I put an island (though very small) back in my own plan is to have a nice open space for shaping loaves and pastry. I can prep veg against a wall, but love having a view when baking. So I wouldn't want to be in a little room if it didn't have another attraction like the health certificate, especially with such a beautiful, open kitchen to be in. So I'd be doing all the baking tasks in the kitchen and schlepping the loaves, trays, etc., into the baking room. For alternatives: In an old fashioned house that room might be a "flower room", not so much for potting, but for arranging flowers, storing vases and baskets, maybe cleaning dirt off of vegetables. Also keeping garden boots, gloves, apron, hat, i.e., mudroom. Or it might be a gun room, but I don't think you have coverts, right? It sounds like you have a lot of storage, but I like the larder idea. A spare fridge. A freezer. Pantries. Etc. Or you could use it as a "lumber" room, that is a place for suitcases, spare bicycles, etc. All the dumped stuff you've been warned against. The trick is to start out with shelving, hooks, slatwall, etc., for organizing whatever comes in, as it comes in, so that it doesn't become a horror.

Broom cabinet--I love ours! (It was the one feature from our old 1930s kitchen that we had to have in the new one, too.) If you want a little pizzazz to it, you can do the hidden ironing board or put an outlet in it so that you can store cordless vacs and such in there. (We did that with ours but then ended up switching which side was for brooms and which was for pantry items, so never use the plug--someday I'll come up with something to plug in there!)

Nope - it was just to give an idea of size/vision. It was from houzz.

the bottom pic shows the actual spot - pardon the mess! (now you can see why I was so desperate for a remodel!)

My old "cantry" is the long skinny slotted knotty pine door. The rest of that wall where the fridge is, is now gone but that right corner is where the new cabinet will be. It's depth goes to about where my daughter's artwork is hung. The brick facade will be gone and on that wall is going to be chalkboard paint like this (only right on the wall vs/ cabinet):

Sorry I still don't know where you're talking about. With this picture the right corner is where the brick is. Are you saying it will be behind the slotted pine door and oriented in that direction and about a foot deep?

Hard to give you ideas about what to use it for when we don't know what you already have planned elsewhere, spice, pantry, shrunken head collection, broom, etc.

Here is layout pics...they don't do it justice but the skinny cab to the right of the stove is already a spice pull out.

Island - To re-orient you - you were right - it will be behind the slotted pine door, oriented in that direction and will be about about a foot deep. The new kitchen layout does not really represent the space accurately.

Broom and vacuum - you don't want to have to run down to the basement every time you want to sweep crumbs! Maybe not super cool, but useful.

I'd do the broom closet in the bottom portion and have shelves up above it with the charging station/key rack or whatever else you want to put in there. I'm putting in a charging station and I'm really excited about it. It will be small, but should be enough to hold all those phones/ipods to be charged.

You could also do a magnetic/white/or chalk board on the inside of the door if it would work for you. (I'm looking for ways to hide the clutter and calendars etc in my new kitchen, but my kids are older now).

Do you have a lot of cookbooks? You could do a book cabinet like mine, only behind a door (or not, I don't know all the structural requirements).
