Was Anyone's Granite Backsplash Done Like This?

Nothing about picking our granite has been easy. I thought we were going to get to select our slab, but before that happened, one had already been picked up by the fabricator. Then we were supposed to get to see the slab at the fabricator's, but before we got there (the same morning we were told he had picked it up), it had already been cut. Then, before I had a chance to clarify which edge I wanted (the builder sent me one list of choices, the fabricator a different list), the edge was done. Imagine my amazement when I went to see my granite during installation and I loved it. There was only one thing I found a little odd. On one wall I have a tall pantry cabinet, refrigerator, another tall pantry cabinet, then a lower cab drawer unit with granite on top. They put a 4 in. backsplash along the wall behind the drawer unit as I would have expected, but they also ran the backsplash along the side where the counter and the side of the pantry meet. It looks a little odd to me but it was already in place by the time I arrived at the house. I just wanted to know if anyone else's backsplash was done like this.

TC, I have exactly the same wall as you, and NO there is no granite backsplash on the pantry wall. (We were going to get granite BS, but company went bankrupt first- so no BS at all now)

Early pic before kitchen was finished, but shows you that there is no granite BS on pantry.

The granite in my old house was done the same way as yours, totallyconfused -- 6" backsplash on along the side of the cabinet that held the double ovens and on the cabinet with the refrigerator.

AboutToGetDusty, did they have a fire? I can't imagine doing something on my stove top that would melt anything on the walls. Our range has a back to it, too it's not a countertop inset range. It would require a large fire on the stovetop to affect the wallpaper in our kitchen. Anyway this stuff is not vinyl it is a type of foam, and meets CA fire code or it wouldn't be sold here. ao34, ours is the Allen and Roth brand from lowes, link below. Granite Backsplash with Tile BS or just Tile Backsplash???

My granite supplier advised using tile from the granite up (no granite back splash). She could have advised the other way and made a little more money, so I think she advised based on her honest opinion. I also like the "no granite back splash" look better. Just guessing, I'd say the only reason to use the 4" granite back splash would be if you weren't going to use any other back splash at all (a more low-budget option, in my opinion).

I don't like the 4" backsplash for the following reasons: - if you are doing a decorative tile for the rest of the backsplash, you are now decreasing and cutting off your design area by 4". - the 4" creates a little "shelf" that gets dusty, just one more thing to clean. - added expense to install the 4" piece of granite along your countertop. - people who say you "need it" to cover a gap between the countertop and the tiled wall just don't have good installers. My kitchen walls are extremely out-of-plumb, but my tile backsplash meets my granite countertop with no gaps cause I had experienced installers. - IMHO it looks dated, since the 4" idea was popular with formica in the '70's. I would only do a 4" backsplash if I were doing no other backsplash at all and just leaving drywall on the rest of the wall. And even in that case, I'd try to make it a little higher, like 5" or 6".

TC, we recently replaced our old laminate counters with granite. We had a wall of cabinets similar to yours and the 4 in laminate backsplash was installed just as you describe! When we removed it, however, we chose not to do a granite backsplash at all (tile all the way to the counter).

totallyconfused, I don't think it would look right to have a sidesplash, but maybe they know something we don't know? Will it protect the cabinet? Personally I wouldn't like it. I would question it. They should have allowed you to be more involved in the decision-making. You are paying good money for this service and it should be done to your liking.

Well, it certainly looked "right" in my kitchen, but I suppose it's what you're used to. I think this might be more normal if you have any sort of granite backsplash (we had a full granite backsplash in that kitchen).

If a customer chooses a standard 4" backsplash, then it's "the norm" to have 4" side splashes done--whether against a wall or against a pantry or fridge cabinet. It helps to cover any small gaps that the counter might show and it looks more "finished" to have the sidesplashes. If there is no 4" backsplash, as many people are choosing to do, then of course the side splashes are non existant as well. You would then tile the full height backsplash and usually 4" of the side splash area.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like another one of those personal preference/whatever you're used to situations. It still looks a little odd to me, but I guess I'll get used to it in time.

In our PR, we had a BS installed behind the faucet but no "side splash". I like it much better than the old PR w/the side splash.

I'd say if there's a water source very nearby that will be used often, then a side splash is probably a good idea. However, if there is none, then I would prefer it w/o the side splash...yes, personal preference (there are a lot of personal preference questions on the Forum today!)

I don't have a good picture of the side splash in our old PR, but here's the remodeled PR sink (before painting, etc.):
