Stained Glass & Mosaics

Need idea for children's class

Hi! I've been thinking about teaching a short summer mosaic course at our local Boys & Girls Club. I thought it might be fun for each kid to do a stepping stone, but I'm not sure what to use as the tessarae. I don't think it would be a great idea to have the kids cutting stained glass, although I suppose I could limit the course to kids 13 and up. Nipping glass tile would be less hazardous, I think, but I can't afford to buy glass tile for ten projects. Would you all like to help me brainstorm some ways to make a fun, creative, and inexpensive project with the kids?

I would buy the premade cement stepping stone and go to the dollar store and buy some stones, nuggets, dishes?? If you get them to smash the plates then put in a plastic jug with water just covering the smashed bits, screw lid back on and shake to dull the edges? I'd only use porceline plates tho. You can do the same with stained glass, pre-cut it yourself and dull the edges with the jar or a rock tumbler. Sounds like fun!!!

Try to find some one to donate some tiles or plates .You might be surprice to find some donation .

One thing you want to keep in mind is that veggie gardens need rotation schedules. So beans today should be squash tomorrow, and vice versa. I like hopscotch, chess/checkers, and the like for kids gardens. The ones I'm working on will have a fountain kids can stand under, another for splashing, and a spray hose. Another will have a playhouse and a garden train. Hideyholes, like your arbor, are great fun for kids. I had a playhouse as a child made from the interior of a yaupon holly I cleared of dead branches! If you don't have it elsewhere, a sandbox is a must for littler kids. And small fruits are a MUST in both gardens. You can choose thornless varieties, but honestly, I picked from thorny brambles from about age 5.

Thank you all so much for your replies and ideas. The phyllo dough demo went over very well last year and we did not have anyone in the group of 20? (ages 30-60) who had ever used it. They all seemed to really enjoy seeing it used and had a lot of questions. I talked briefly about puff pasty and none had used that either, so hence, this year it is. A few of the ladies are good cooks but cook basic southern cooking. I have no idea if anyone will actually make anything I show, but it is fun and entertaining! The cured salmon made me laugh...must be a northern thing. Now if I made jerky venison.... One of my close friends always brings something to our groups that is lovely, one year she brought smoked salmon and lots of garnishes...beautifully presented. It went untouched. Dh and I pigged out afterward on it. Most social occasions seem to have an abundance of chocolate fountains, m&m's, hotdogs, store bought french onion dip... So, I did think about yeast rolls and I may do a savory filling for the turnovers. But not mushroom (sorry Ann, but I appreciate the recipe- I like mushrooms as much as you like carrots) I would like do something really easy but if possible, not bready. Can't do canned biscuits- just hate them. (I know, P. Farm puff pastry isn't much better!) I have a recipe for ranch dressing, rosemary grilled chicken that is a little different, may do that on skewers. Hmmm, how to use a pastry bag? How to pipe whipped cream into strawberries? Caramelized onion dip? Stuffed, rolled, turkey breast? (I like this idea) I truly am reading and pondering everyone's ideas. Thank you so much.

Think about a folding flat cart to haul the piece. They have them at HD/Lowes that are stepstools which change to the flat cart. And an electric stapler. ACE brand has worked the best for me. It will be interesting what tools the class suggests. Keep us updated. I agree with starting on something which will give you options to take advantage of the class. If you already make slipcovers, this class will be a breeze for you. You know the details required for sewing, upholstery is actually easier. Taking the old fabric off is the worst part. Have fun. For my children classes, I start them out with picture frames and things like buttons, glass nuggets, sea shells, sea glass, beads. I would also suggest as Calamity says, you can nip your own and tumble them if you feel that would be safer. Porceline plates or even bath tile are going to be VERY sharp.

Picture frames would be a great idea! Then I could take a picture of each kid working, have it printed, and then put it in the frame when the class is done. And I should be able to find things like buttons and other sparklies at an antique store. I'm just a little too worried about doing things with sharp edges.

Premade stones, and marbles the 1/2 ones! and tumbled glass, with mortor or thin set. I 'd just tumble bunches of glass, and let them go for it! No cutting! just fun!

There are some really pretty colors of ceramic mini tile. You don't have to cut them and they don't have any sharp edges. I have bought them from several places including Ebay.

you might also check out Maryland Mosaics and Mosaic Basics. they both have them. I think Basics has them as low as $9 something a lb which is 450 tiles. But if you put Gardenweb in the code section, you can get 10% off at maryland mosaics!! Just check them all out.

and the ideas of shells, buttons etc all are great ideas. I know you will have

another idea is the marbles from places like walmart. I bought a big batch of different colors a couple of weeks ago, in the crafts area. They were less than $2 a bag.
