LOOKING for: Your favorite veggie burger

My husband wants to start eating vegetarian. The only meat meal he claims he will miss is grilled hamburgers. I would like to find a really delicious veggie burger---either store bought or your own recipe. We just tried Amy's organic vegetable "Chicago" burgers, but found them to be disappointing---too much of a "cardboard"-like taste. What is your favorite?

Walnut Burgers

2 lg eggs
2/3 cup whole wheat bread crumbs(I just use WW bread torn into small pieces)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
1/2 cup small-curd cottage cheese
2 tbs chopped parsley
1 tsp basil
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp papriks
garlic salt
4 slices cheese (your preference)
toasted buns or bread
garnish(lettuce, tomato, red onion)

In a bowl,beat eggs. Stir in bread crumbs,walnuts,green onions,wheat germ,cottage cheese,parsley,and herbs. Season to taste with garlic salt.
Broil on greased sheet until brown on both sides. Top with cheese and broil till melted.
Serve on buns with condiments.

I like the MorningStar farms regular veggie burger and especially their spicy black bean burgers. But neither tastes like a regular, non-veg burger. Try the Boca burgers. If I remember right, they are closer to the taste and texture of a hamburger. If those aren't available, look for a brand with more soy content instead of veggies.

I have become addicted to Mock Mashed Potatoes made with cauliflower! I had seen the recipes from time to time, but never thought they would really taste like real mashed potatoes -- but they do. My preparation is very simple. I've seen it with Ranch Dressing or non-fat Ranch Dressing added to it also. Steam a head of cauliflower until very soft. Mash. Add I Can't Believe It's Not Butter & salt to taste. ---------------------------------------------------------- Here's another one, a bit more complicated but still easy: Mock Mashed Potatoes Your guests will probably never know that these rich mashed potatoes contain no potatoes at all. They are made from cauliflower. Great for low-carb diets. These are doubly good with bacon bits added. INGREDIENTS: 1 head cauliflower, cut into florets (discard core and large stems) 1 (14 ounces) can chicken or vegetable broth (or homemade - about 1-3/4 cups) 2 Tbsp butter 2 ounces cream cheese 2 Tbsp sour cream 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup sliced green onions, white and green parts Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste PREPARATION: 1. Place cauliflower florets in a large saucepan. Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. 2. Cover and simmer until very tender, about 12 minutes. 3. Drain thoroughly through a fine sieve and return to the pot over low heat. 4. Cook about 2 more minutes to dry out excess moisture, stirring constantly. (It's okay that they break apart.) Pour cauliflower into food processor fitted with the metal blade. 5. Add butter, cream cheese, sour cream, cheddar cheese, green onion, salt, and pepper. Pulse to combine. Reheat before serving, if necessary.

Asian Lettuce Wraps are all basically the same, give or take a few ingredients. Ground meat, chicken, pork, beef, seasonings - garlic, onions, green onions, cilantro,ginger, etc... Something crunchy, peanuts, bean sprouts, water chestnuts,etc.... and some sort of dipping sauce that may or may not contain soy sauce. One of those things that can be changed up and adjusted to suit ones own taste. Glad you found a recipe that you liked Sue. They really are messy to eat aren't they. LOL! Ann

I am a 47 year old who asked for a blood test at her primary physcian office. Who when I went for the follow-up, test results, reported that I have High Blood Pressure, High Colestral and that my Blood Sugar was up really high. The Doctor has given me some high blood pressure pills, along with two diabetic pills to see if we can get it under control he also says that I should exercise. My big mistake was Pepsi Colas &` Kool Aid. I usually pick up one of the two before I pick up water. No water. and I know I should have 8 glass of that a day. If I'm going to try to get all of my numbers down I need to know how to eat right for life. Please help I don't want to have to be on diabetic pills all of my life or even colestral pills.

Hi Marlene, I thought you'd be swamped with recipes by now! There's no end to my favorite recipes. A few simple ideas: I love pasta with fresh veggies - the veggies can be steamed or roasted or grilled or cooked into a sauce. For example: 1. fresh cherry tomatoes, garlic, basil - half or quarter tomatoes and heat all in a non-stick skillet just long enough to heat. Toss with pasta. (Has to be garden tomatoes, tho, store tomatoes just aren't the same!!). 2. grill veggies of choice and toss with pasta. I love grilled red peppers, onions, eggplant, summer squash. Add herbs like basil or rosemary... yum! 3. Another one that needs garden tomatoes: cook tomatoes and green beans - onion if you like - basil - garlic - cook this all well (I know, I know, veggies are healthier crispy, but this is sooo good!) for 20-30 minutes. Serve over pasta or rice. I have a recipe for lentils and eggplant, kind of a BBQ flavor, that I love. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send it to you. There's lots you can do with lentils (and beans) too - lentil burgers are great - I like black bean salad with celery and red onion and a lime dressing - or a lentil and potato salad, hot, with a vinegar dressing... The simpler, the better, and in my opinion, the freshest best veggies make a world of difference. I do stir-fry with or without tofu. Tofu is fun and you can do tons with it. Check out your library - should be some great books there - and do a search on the internet. Here's one link (below) to get you started that has more links attached to it. If you aren't vegan, (or even if you are - just ignore the dairy recipes) look at Nikki and David Goldbeck's cookbook, I think it's called American Wholefoods Cuisine. Chock full of great stuff! as are many other books. How old is your son? Does he have strong preferences or is he willing to experiment? Those things can make a huge difference in what he's willing to try. Good for him for making this decision, and good for you for supporting him!! Grill him a portobello mushroom! They have the consistancy of meat and taste great basted with olive oil and salt and peppered.....and they fit on the bun!!! Provide the 'usual' trimmings.

IMHO, Yves makes the BEST veggie burgers. Even meat-eaters I know have claimed that they're so close in texture and flavor that they have a difficult time telling them apart.

I like the Gardenburger Original burgers, you can find them in the frozen food section. I even slipped one in on my husband a year ago and he loved it :)

I just came from another board where this came up. Bocca was the favorite of those who wanted a meaty texture.

Even as a meat eater I like veggie burgers. I do not want mine to be meat like however. I love the Amy organic california burgers, and the garder burger mushroom.

Gardenburger is my favorite brand,
But I agree with the poster who said to give him a grilled portobella mushroom. They're vegetarian steaks. I marinate mine in a raspberry chipotle sauce and they're really tasty!

I am not a vegetarian but my daughter is, and she likes the garden burgers BECAUSE she does not like the taste and texture of meat. I have tried them all, and would say that portobello mushrooms are phenomenal. you could swear you are eating steak. For the frozen ones, I really like Boca burgers- they taste most beef like to me, and the morning star are pretty good as well.

I second the original Gardenburgers, as far as store brands go. But for those of you who live in the South, you simply cannot beat a Houston's veggie Burger. Unbelievable.
