A little update- Dining Room finds

I posted last fall about my struggles with my awkward dining room. This is what it looked like then:

Then my DH saw a dining room table and chairs when he was driving by a yard sale. He sent me some pics on his phone and I said "buy it!" It is a very solid set in great condition, made by a company that was later bought out by Ethan Allen. We got the table with two big leaves and six chairs for $300. I recovered the chair seats and I'm pretty happy with it.

kareen, I finally can see your pictures (I am at home now on my laptop, I never could get them to load on the computer at work). Anyway, I love your ceramics they are very pretty, pink and green is one of my favorite color combos. Kathleen, thanks for the heads up about the Taste of Home magazine I shall buy it, after all I want my cupcakes to taste as good as they will (hopefully) look. Patty cakes, I bought some pink dishes at Target recently, the "devil made me do it". The mosiac cupcake picture was posted on the Crafts forum, I thought someone over there might be interested in the inspiration. Isn't that aggravating when you make all those trips and still don't find everything you need, yep has happened to me too. Kathleen, that is hard when you don't have nearby towns! I often have to rely on going to several of the stores in the surrounding towns be able to complete a set of something.

Hi! Don't be jealous...we found it IN the mouse turds and dead bees. That's why it was such a chore to get it cleaned and rewired! I literally took the whole thing apart, took out the old, rotted, mouse-chewed wiring, and hand scrubbed each piece with lots of hot soapy water. Anyway, thanks so much! It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun to get it all done and finally see it all together. One of the few rooms that I've finished so far, that looks as good as I pictured it in my head! For that hutch, I was going to just paint it the wall color (Behr Calla Lilly) but maybe make the back piece of it a contrasting color. Now I wonder if I should go with a different, darker color? Paint the whole thing a color, and use a cream color for the background? Flip the color scheme that I used for the other cabinet? I have no idea, but I'm totally open to suggestion. I don't really want it all matchy-matchy, but I do want it to look like it all belongs together, if that makes sense. Why is so much newly made furniture so poorly made? Or made of poor materials? I've looked at a few tables, but I'm not paying $300 for MDF. I'm going to search Craigslist and the antique stores for something vintage, or at least made out of wood.

Hi juliekcmo. I'm procrastinating right now, so here I am, on GW. I'm sure I'll get motivated to find the painting supplies that are packed away in the basement soon... So, that room is really nice. The one thing that immediately hits me is the need for curtain panels. If the color is a keeper (you know how hard it is to actually convey the true color in a photo) I might play with the idea of curtains that are closet to the wall color, so they add texture but yet not add another color. That's where I'd start. I think a rug would really be nice in there too. And since you have to move the table anyway when Thanksgiving comes It would be easy to roll it up (take it to the carpet place nearby and have it cleaned during that time) and then put it back after the holidays all nice and fresh. Sort of like a little spa time for the rug. ;) Then, maybe a new chandy. It can act as a piece of art in the room. You can also add one of those faux plaster thingamajigs on the ceiling where the chandy goes. Medallion, that's it. Faux plaster medallion. That really would give your ceiling more interest. Well, I guess I better go find the blue painters tape and get my project moving....

You all are too good to me! I am seriously considering not using window treatments at all now - or, at least, not drapes. I don't know why I had it in my head that I just HAD to use drapes in this room. I never stopped to reevaluate once the painting was done. Anyway, thank you for all of the helpful input. I will keep you posted on my progress. My MIL is coming over on Friday to help me finish up the wallpaper. I'll try to find some pics of the rest of the room. Its somewhat odd...there are the windows, which you've seen, the two built-ins are across from each other and there is a small corner fireplace - not to mention a whopping FIVE doorways!

jlc I have the very same drapes in my living room, and I lOVE the rug and fabric you put with it. It's amazing how the exact same curtains can look so different from home to home.

Jen, you found a winner with that dining set, and I'm jealous of how talented you are to recover the chair seats! It looks wonderful in your space. I love the rich look of the window treatments, and the table is a rich addition to your other furniture pieces. Nice job!

Jen, that looks wonderful! Love the space even more now. How cool of your husband to notice(...AND THEN ACTUALLY STOP TO BUY!..).the dining table and chairs. Kudos to him as well. :)

Oh, thank you! Your opinions mean a lot to me. I apologize for the weird-sized pics-- I can't seem to figure out re-sizing.

I have struggled with this room for years. It has always been an unused, walk-through space. I may actually have to break out my china and have my parents over for dinner.

And my 16 year old barely used china coordinates beautifully! It is cream with a sage and pale green border with raised green dots and a gold rim. Everyone thought I was crazy for not getting a more neutral pattern. But I digress.

SG, the paint color is Shire Fields from Kwal-Howells. I have loved it and wish I used it in more rooms. It is a very soft green that is not at all minty.

Jan, I have no talent :) Covering chairs like that is a matter of unscrewing them from the bottom, wrapping fabric around, and stapling it. Sooo easy.

Sameboat, I really like the drapes too, but I can't stop fiddling with them. The exposed rod in the center really bothers me, but I don't know if I would like the valance in the center.... I have considered buying another set of panels to make it look fuller.

Next projects: I would like to stain the stair rail to match the floors. I think it will be difficult and I am scared! I have NO idea why we went with that light color stain. I also want to find a small chandelier- it will have to be swagged since our contractor was a nimrod, and a small ceiling mount light for the entry. I can't wait to be rid of the dreaded "boob" lights!
