Great idea - you are in for a lot of work. For a fund raiser where all the American Embassy kids went to school, I made a cookbook one time - gathered lots of recipes from people in the Embassy where I was a wife at the time - not working. I had permission to use Embassy facilities to do the typing, printing and assembly. To give y'all an idea of how long ago this was, I typed the stencil and ran it on a Gestetner duplicator. OK, I'll give you a hint - it was in the late '60s. Forgot how many copies I made of the book, but it took me all day to print them out. It was lots of work, but a great success. The Deputy Chief of Mission's wife had a copy bound for me w/a wonderful note written on the inside. It's a great cookbook and I still use it. This doesn't have a thing to do w/SG/M - forgive me - but your idea brought this to mind, and I applaud you for wanting to take on a project such as this. What would be the results - for sale to forum members?

How cool is that??? I think it's a great endeavor. I'm in for contributing anyway I can! and yes, don't kill yourself, take it slow one step at a time. Pictures are the best so we'll have to figure out how to include lots!

I've put many things such as this together. I just did the cover for a cookbook that was sold to raise money for a cancer patient in Houston, Texas. I also did all the type setting for a book written by a former pilot for The Dallas Cowboys. I work with Pagemaker and Photoshop. Would you be doing the lay-out? Sounds fun. I wish someone would put out a book with all our questions, like when do you use the mapei, what glue for this, what sealer, etc. etc..

LIL: Just go online for those questions. There are lots of tutorials out there. In searching out artists' tips I've found that you get different opinions from every one of them. I doubt there could ever be a book that would answer all questions, cuz we all have different opinions of the things that work best for us - different climates, different techniques, whatever. There is no definite answer to most questions.

Maybe this is just a dream ....but I'll look into it ...

You could also make it an downloadable ebook or save the digital file as a pdf and uploaded it to cafepress or somewhere so people can purchase it on demand so you wouldn't have to put any money into the printing.

My tip for a book like this: You'd want to make sure that people emailed you with their hints/tips, rather than copying posts from the forum. Even though we wrote these posts, the forum owners technically own the copyright.

TMG Sounds wonderful. You might consider something like burning to Disk instead of printing. This way there could be lots of pictures. Easy to mail. Not too much expense in burning and could be burned as needed instead of bunches of books sitting around.

The E Book is a good idea too only I do not have a clue about the working of that.

I am sure even burning to disk would be a lot of work to put something like this together but with the editing programs on our computers now it would help. I know when I built the list and maps for the cemeteries on the computer a few yers ago I about swooned when I first started the project. Do take it slow.

We did this on an on-line book club that I belong to.

A brave lady put all entries into a .pdf file and those that wanted to then downloaded the book. I printed my own and put it in a 3-ring binder.

I'll think about this one .. maybe it IS too big of a project ! ( But a cool thought !)

Lilym's offered to typeset/layout for you and I've got Acrobat, so can PDF it for you. Like I said before, just have people email you tips/tricks so your backside will be covered.

Btw, GW does not own the copyright to posts here. What they own is a non-exclusive license to the post which means you still own the copyright and can republish your own post anywhere else you want as long as where ever you publish doesn't ask for an exclusive license. So posts here could be published in a book as long as the original poster gives their permission(which by the way I would get in writing). Here is the statement in the GW terms of service:

By submitting content, which shall include your member name, to any "public area" of the GardenWeb Network, including, but not limited to, the forums and your personal website, exchange page and journal, you grant iVillage a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive right (including any moral rights) and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, sublicense, assign, derive revenue or other remuneration from, communicate to the public, perform and display the content (in whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed, for the full term of any Rights that may exist in such content.

Pea, it's like publishing an article in a magazine-- you would still have the right to your own words (unless your contract with the publisher states otherwise), but the publisher owns the right to the piece as a whole. In other words, someone can't come along, copy content, then do what they want with it.

Someone else can't but the original poster of a post can. GW only has a nonexclusive license to your words they do not own them lock, stock, and barrel.

What I am saying is that when you post something to GW you are granting GW a right to use what you wrote but that right is nonexclusive(as per terms). So you could take your own post and grant another site or publication the same rights to those same words. So you could take your own post that is on GW and grant someone the same nonexclusive right to publish your post in a book. You could not grant rights to publish someone else's post or any thing else here at GW, only your own words. So the book publisher would have to get permission from every poster that they use a post from.

I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say...the poster wanting to make a book could use posts from GW but only after attaining permission from the posters of those posts.

As an artist I read and reread terms to make sure what rights I am giving to places I post, I would never post to someplace that would claim exclusive rights to my words.

I like your idea...I have been ticked off for a long time that there is not a monthly mosaicing magazine that we could subscribe to and post our pictures in. They seem to have a magazine for EVERY craft EXCEPT mosaicing...If you do this book in whatever format you do it...I definitely want some copies. Think about it girls, we are the best group I have seen out there. Our work is great, the people are even greater...we have each others backs when the occasion calls for...I have no doubt that each and all of you would not rally around me to defend me and what we stand for if it was called for. ...we are the special elite tacktical forces of mosaic artisans "SETFOMA" Give me liberty or give me death!!!!! ha ha ha!!!

A monthly e-zine would be a good thing I think.

I do believe that 'hair brained' is the way things get started and take off....
you have a great idea...
call a publishing co. and see if there's any plan to start such a magazine.
the most important thing for the mags, is in the advertising. that's the area they need to have their ducks in a row, before they can start any production on any topic.
