Grand Ganyon in Winter

I'm going to the Grand Canyon in mid-February for 3 days (sandwiched between 2 business trips). We're staying in the park. Any suggestions on what to do, see, places to eat, etc?

darn, I wish someone would answer you. We are planning a trip in April and I was hoping some of the suggestions would include that time period.

I got one message sent to my e-mail. I've pasted the text of it below in case it helps.

"My husband and I went last year and it was wonderful..
Dress warm..layers..good hiking shoes..Eat at the Park resturants..they are very reasonable..We took our time..sat by the fire..talked to people..there is a train that makes daily runs to Williams..that is fun to do, if you have time."

My aunt has done the train and enjoyed it. I don't think we're going to because we're driving up from Phoenix and staying in the canyon.

When I get back, I'll post some info about what we did and liked here.

You've got hardy mums, regular garden mums. Nothing regular about them. I love them and have many. I'm in zone 4/5 and I leave mine the way they are. In the spring I cut off the dead stems and they come back from the roots. You shouldn't have to pot them up and put them in the basement if you don't want to. Also, they will come up stronger and happier each year. If they get too big divide and share with someone. If you're looking for a winter project check out the Winter Sowing forums--planting seeds in the middle of winter! A few Gardenweb points: 1. Many won't like it that you've posted a question on the Seed Swap link. You should probably find a more appropriate forum--but many people love to give advice, tell you their best practices and suggestions. 2. You don't have an email set up. I saw your post, clicked on My Page (by your username) to find your trade lists and your email, but you don't have an email set up. GW sets it up this way so that not everything is public, especially if you're trading seeds and plants and need to give someone your name and address. Good luck! Heidi

That ginger goes completely dormant. I let them dry out, dig them up, and winter them in a plastic grocery bag, with the handles tied loosely, not sealed or it can rot (I overwinter many things this way). It will take up about as much space as a large apple, and requires exactly NO care until spring. I store the bag in an 18 gal. rubbermaid tub with no lid on it. I can fit fifty or sixty large plant rhizomes in that tub in this fashion. Probably too late for your poor plant, but FYI for the future.

Perhaps a below-grade discharge pipe. If it runs downhill from the heated basement to an underground receptacle that has a bottom below the frost depth, water shouldn't have a chance to freeze. Having the entire run of the pipe below the frost line would be better, though I believe that's 40 inches or more in your area.

I know Carol.. and I can understand the curiosity. I started the research for these names 5-6 yrs ago and have now ended up with a huge collection of jasmines and then some :) I am a jasmine junkie too..lol! I have french perfume jasmines called as jasminum grandiflorum french perfume(flora plena) which is a double and jasminum grandiflorum a single from logees. Both of them are vigorous bloomers in summer and do not require chilling period for blooms. The nurseries sell them with different names but essentially they all are cultivars of jasmineum officianale. I love the single variety a little better. The blooms are bigger for this cultivar. Accents sells a single variety called as jasminum officianale or poet's jasmine which has smaller bloom. They also have double variety and call it as jasmine officianale grandiflora-french perfume. We throughly enjoyed the Grand Canyon. We spent two full days there, and pretty much covered the easy things to do on the South Rim. We didn't do anything outside the park. We stayed in Grand Canyon Village.

We walked along the rim around the village, took the shuttle to the east and the tour to Hermit's Rest (to the west). The tour guide provided some nice information, but if the shuttle had been running, I would have preferred it. It starts March 1, so it will be running when you're there. We could have driven, but heights make me nervous and I didn't want to drive it.

If you have a car, the trip to the east entrance, the Pueblo ruins and museum, and the watch tower are well worth it. It's also a lovely drive from the GC Village.

If you like to hike, I saw a trailhead for the Arizona Trail. It wasn't in my hiking book, but it looked like an interesing non-Canyon hike through woods. I had thought about braving part of the Bright Angel trail, but it was ice covered and I don't own crampons so I had a good excuse not to scare myself.

We ate at the Bright Angel Resturant and the Arizona Steakhouse. I'd give them both a B at dinner. The Bright Angel was very good at breakfast, but not so great at dinner.

By the way, if you're staying longer and want a long day trip, try to go Canyon de Chelly. I've not been there, but have been to several other Ananazi (sp?) sites, (Chaco Canyon, Bandilier, Aztec and Pecos) and they're always stunning.
