Take them up or leave them

A little bit of renovation fatigue, a little bit of money flying out the door, we are thinking that we don't enclose the top of the wall cabinets to the ceiling, and just leave them for now, cleaning up the ceiling and doing the crown around the back wall.

Opinions? Thanks all...

At least crown the top of the cabs. I put above cabinet lights up there (with molding on the cabs) and love the lighting at night. I have 9 ft ceilings also.

At the risk of letting on that I am an addict AND a thread hijacker...I have a related question... BananasDotOrg, you mentioned that on a plantation, they cut down the pups and leave them so that only the desired pseudostems will produce. When I have cut large pups, they just keep growing. I thought I read here about pouring kerosene into the cut to get that particular pseudostem to stop growing. (too strange to have imagined, right?) I wonder about keeping production up when I have so many pups. Ultimately, I also want to move this particular mat as it is blocking too much sun for my veggies. So I am transplanting pups when I can, but I need to get some of very large pseudostems under control. Can I use kerosene?

Hey there, Thanks a bunch for the positive encouragement about my front yard plans. My neighbors are all convinced that Im crazy because they all have chemlawn rectangles in their front yard. Secondly, my name is greg. I am not offended by being called bob, or frank, fred, or even mary. My screen name, sunshineboy, was how I was referred to as by the employees of the spermbank where I used to donate sperm....but thats another story and I have already hijacked this thread enough. So I wanted to reply to a few of the last posts. Kt..last fall I planted some trees to create some anchor points. I put in a dogwood, a quaking aspen, a lace leaf weeping red maple, a redbud, a pear tree, a dwarf saturn peach tree, and my showpiece..a dwarf lavender weeping redbud. But as pointed out, it looked ridiculous during the winter without winter interest. I do have a few boulders and height elevations, but I needed something else. I have a few taller pampas grasses (but those are temporary for a few years). I also got 7 elijah blue festucas, some yellow twigged and red twigged dogwoods, china girl holly, cypress (chamaecyparis pisifera compacta), cypress sungold threadbranch, some rose of sharon, contorted hazelnut, etc. Not really helping the winter, but for spring I planted a bunch of bulbs last fall..tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, etc. And I moved a few azaleas up front and they put on quite a show. And here and there I am tucking in perennials such as daylillies and shasta daisies and sedum and salvia (heat tolerant stuff that I dont need to water). I put pumpkins on a rock last fall and seedlings that have sprouted will be this falls crop. And california poppies self seeded into several of the free spaces---Im a california native so I NEED this plant in my yard. Im open to any suggestions cause this is a work in progress. My only catch is I try to limit how much I spend on my yard--Im cheap. I spent less than $200 in plants--most were gifts or trades. The bobcat was borrowed from a friend for a day, and the only other cost was $150 for the gravel. Lastly, that stray dog just wandered into my yard. I havent been feeding him cause I wasnt sure if I wanted him to stick around. Leave them. You could do more harm than good. IF the new owners don't like where they are let them take them down. I've found very often after buying a house the picture hangers left behind often work for my stuff too.

You could add both - I know Lena said it is not necessary (and it isn't an absolute must), but anything that will make the mix more porous is a plus. Especially if you are heavy waterer or if your plants are outdoors where it rains more often. I don't remember if you mentioned your general location (it is good to indicate by your name - as you can see most ppl do); I am in Ontario, Canada and have to bring plants inside for the winter but keep them all outdoors otherwise. All my succulents are in a mix of grit+perlite+turface and have been for almost 4 years now.

How are the cabinets in the rest of the room? I have a wall of cabinets like that, but I don't have any uppers in the rest of the kitchen. I think it should be consistent with whatever else is going on in the kitchen.

I understand that you're getting tired, after looking at the top of my cabinets, I'd say to bite the bullet and close that opening.

There is no reason to add crown unless you really like that look. Crownless is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Yes, but take Mahlgold's lesson. There's an important reason why her cabinets stop there. Very deliberate and very excellent. Can you add something else to integrate that top line into the overall design? How about working on the layout of those shelves in the corner for a start? But it doesn't have to be this summer. :)

Mahlgold, I love your kitchen. It looks so simple and serene. It must be a joy to work at your counters without uppers crowding your space.

I noticed that there is a door on the far side of that pic. Would you get a tunnel effect putting the up to the ceiling?

Without seeing them in context with the remainder of the kitchen, I agree to take them all the way up. Cleaning there will be a pain.

One important difference between Whit and Mahlgold's kitchens is that Mahlgold's cabinets are much shallower than are Whit's.

Malhgold, it's like you knew. We have no uppers in the rest of the kitchen (sorry, the pic was just taken over morning coffee). The cabinets come out 24" and nearly fill a space between 2 doorways. We have 11" clear at top and it is not enough for functional doors above. Original plan had me going all the way up and installing crown around the room. With careful planning I could add faux drawer fronts later which would be a consistent look all the way to the top. Urgh...... I am one hard weekend from being done!

Based on the rest of the kitchen, I would leave them as they are. I think if you take them to the top it will overpower the kitchen. To me it would feel like they were top heavy.

Your kitchen looks beautiful. Great minds think alike!!

Your kitchen and Mahlgold's have some nice things in common. Your pantry block is much higher than the rest already, though. Nothing to tie in to. I'd finish to the ceiling in a very simple manner--12" board sawn down and very simple moldings as needed bottom and top. The flat plane will echo the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. Doesn't have to be done this summer, though. :)
