Hello People...the world does not revolve around you!
Comments (31)Jen - that is CRAZY! Lukki you are not alone! It is very hard for me to hold my tongue but in the past I felt that I had to so that I would conform a bit more to 'societies political correctness' of accepting everything. I've been accused of being rude in the past because, as my family puts it: I'm blunt and say what's on my mind. Somehow that stopped but once I had my 1st baby I decided that I didn't want him to grow up in such a rude world w/ so many egocenntric, thoughtless people so I started speaking up again. I work in a Dr.s office and one of the things that I point out to each new patient when they arrive (it's something in the paperwork that they sign) is: If you know that you can't make an appointment please call us. 'I know the paperwork says 24hrs but obviously that's not always possible and we certainly understand that.' I try to show that we are reasonable first. Then I say 'And if you know or think that you are going to be late PLEASE call us in advance. We schedule our appt.s every 20 mins. and the patient that is scheduled behind you may require strict one on one attention w/ the therapist and we certainly wouldn't want to shotchange that persons need.' And yet I still can't believe how many people just show up 15 min. late EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TIME! If someone is on their cell phone and they try to do business w/ me I tell them that when they are done they can come back. And if they try to talk w/ me while on the cell phone to conduct their business, I talk w/ them as if I were the only one in the room - I don't care if they are trying to speak w/ the person on the other end of their phone. Then I get up and walk away when I'm done so that they have to follow me for all of the information that they just missed. If they are just generally talking on their cell phone while in the waiting rm. I ask them to leave. I have business that I also need to conduct in this small office. On the retail end of it: One night I was closing our store when a last minute shopper came in 5 min. before closing. She putzed around for about 15 min. I asked her if there was anything that she was looking for and if I could help. She said that she was just browsing (talking on her cell the whole time) and I told her that the store was getting ready to close as it was past closing time. At 15 min. past closing I had the staff shut off the main store lights and started sending people home. 30 min. past closing (the mall was shutting of hall lights) she finally brought something to the register (still on that phone). I didn't do anything. She put her hand over the mouthpiece of the phone and mouthed to me that I could go ahead and ring her up. I very loudly told her that I would wait until she was off of the phone as I like to make sure that my customers have my undivided attention. She immediately hung up. As for the rude drivers, if it's daylight and in a very populated busy area, I have been known to put my car in park at a red light, get out of my van and let them have it. I know it's not a good idea but sometimes I just don't care. You should have seen the look on the guys face that tried to cut me off and then rode my bumper giving me the finger. He about died when we got to the red light (him behind me) and I got out of my van 8 months pregnant and headed for his car. He couldn't get his window up fast enough....See Moresize of cabinet door for magic corner cabinet?
Comments (7)@flseadog, that is exactly the situation we have. If you do a magic corner, you need to reserve some of the 21" for filler at the corner to allow the door/drawer on the opposite side of the corner to open, so you're right, you need a solution that takes a door size of 19" or less (maybe you could swing 19.5" but I'd worry about clearances there). We're using an 18" door + drawer with 3" of wiggle room. I believe Magic Corner I will work (checked the specs again after this thread!) and Magic Corner II will not work. There are also a bunch of other solutions that will fit, but that don't take very good advantage of the blind space. (Most require a 36" cabinet with 15" door, so if, say, you're us and you have room for an 18" door with a 45" cabinet---you don't use most of that space with any of the gadget solutions.) Without knowing your daughter's layout, I'd still say it's probably worth it to do a blind corner of some variety over a susan and preserve space for the drawer banks. That's the reason we didn't look at any susan solutions---it wasn't worth it to lose the drawers. Any corner solution is going to be inferior to drawers as a storage space, in my view. The last option is to ignore the corner completely and just use a bank of drawers on each side with empty space in the corner---most useful if you have an option of accessing that space from the other side (another room, etc.)...See MorePlease help Lazy Susan corner cabinet or Blind Corner Cabinet
Comments (69)Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME....See MoreTaking the plunge: Please help with new kitchen design
Comments (35)So here's a the first layout, a peninsula layout. It does violate some constraints - The prep sink is right-aligned with the window (not centered) Plumbing is added for the cleanup sink The cleanup sink is not under a window (but it is on a run 3" deeper than standard to add "face space" and workspace depth) The Family Room doorway width is reduced by 30" (easy to do even if load-bearing wall) Constraints not violated: It's an eat-in Kitchen for 4 (6 in a pinch) The range did not move MW is not below the counter No doorways expanded or moved (can be an issue if you the wall is load-bearing) No windows modified (banquette seating can be in front of lower windows) . Coffee Center is on the corner of the peninsula facing the table. It's near water for filling (or if it's plumbed), but it's out of the way of the main Kitchen to avoid contention for workspace. Coffee supplies can be stored in the drawers facing the table as well. To keep an open feel, there are no cabinets on the window wall (except the range wall cabinets that die into the window wall). If you need more storage, then they can be added. The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep & Cooking Zones. and contains the Dish Storage. The location of the Cleanup Zone makes it easy to clear the table from either the Kitchen or the Dining Room, unload dishes from the DW, and access dishes for setting the tab;e -- all without getting in the way of someone else working in the Kitchen. Note that the cabinets and counters in the Cleanup Zone are 3" deeper than standard -- 27"D base cabs, 15"D upper cabs, 28.5"D counters. The primary Prep Zone is located b/w the prep sink and range and has plenty of workspace - over 48" on one side and another 12+ inches around the corner. There's a second Prep Zone on the peninsula. With the 21" b/w the corner and prep sink (18" cabinet + 3" filler) and the ample workspace on the peninsula, there shouldn't be any contention for space when someone is working at the prep sink. In fact, the prep sink can be shared --or-- the cleanup sink is relatively close to the secondary prep zone. The 18" cabinet b/w the prep sink and corner could be one of the following or something else altogether! Another trash pullout Tray storage Cutting board storage The trash pullout is in the peninsula. It's not in the primary Prep Zone (hence the optional 2nd trash pullout), but it is near the Cleanup Zone and in the secondary Prep Zone. I debated putting it next to the corner, but I thought it might get in the way. Maybe not....I might rethink that now! There's an 18" tall pantry cabinet as well as a "tall oven cabinet" on the same wall as the Cleanup Zone. The tall oven cabinet has a MW on a shelf in an alcove as well as a pull out shelf below for extra landing space. Above and below there is plenty of space for more pantry storage (especially below the MW) and either additional pantry or tray storage above. I favor the tray storage b/c it's close to the Cooking Zone and you're tall! The refrigerator is a 36"W built-in and is close to both your daily meal space (table in Kitchen) and Family Room (for foraging for snacks!). It's also a direct shot to the Dining Room. I don't know how much pot & pan storage you need -- I put them in a 30" cabinet, but if you need more you could use the corner susan or the 24" cabinet on the other side of the range. Right now, I have small appliances in the corner susan. Both sinks - prep & cleanup - are apron sinks. All aisles are wide enough for ease of use. . If you do go with IKEA cabinets, the 27" one I have next to the cleanup sink will have to be changed b/c IKEA does not have 27" cabinets. Also, IKEA does not make 27" deep base cabinets, so you will need to pull them out from the wall by 3". Finally, all IKEA upper cabinets are 15"D, so the 12"D upper cabs (range and over sink) will need to be changed to 15"D. Layout #1 - peninsula: .
