My mom did something like that years ago, but only had the four spoon sizes. She really liked it and I'm surprised she didn't do it when we moved to a different house. I guess she had more storage, but it was very handy in the baking area!

Do people actually make it work with only one set of measuring spoons and cups? I like the idea, I'd just need 3-4 sets.

macybaby...good point - I have multiples, too. And I have weird sizes like 1 1/2 Tbsp. My fave (which came from a very old Cream of Wheat tin can), is a 3 Tbsp stainless measuring spoon.

It looks to me like the lifting and perhaps twisting the cups and spoons to clear those hooks and put them back on the hooks might be a pain - especially for the higher set for a short person.

Being short, I also tend to keep the plates and such on the second and higher upper shelves close to the front of the cabinet so I can reach them - my reach doesn't go very far back on those shelves. To leave space for the measuring cups, things would have to be pushed back on the shelves a bit.

I keep one set of measuring spoons in the drawer with the spice and herb jars. It's a set with elongated narrower bowls so that even the 1 Tbsp fits into the smaller jars. I keep two other sets of spoons and two sets of cups in a drawer in the baking area. I probably could get by with one set there, but one set of cup measures is a scoop shape that's convenient for measuring flour and sugar and the other is a more normal cup shape. And the second set of spoons helps when I forgetfully put one down on the counter and can't find it. :^o

And that's just for dry measures. Someday I might have less because we increasingly use the convenient scale for recipes.

My mom's storage is similar to lazygarden's mom. She has multiples of one size stored together on one hook. Mom screwed a bunch of hooks right into her pine slab doors. A label isn't needed and you can have as many cup hooks for odd sizes as you want. My mother keeps measuring cups on hooks on a base door and measuring spoons on an upper cabinet door. Her base cabinet is a standard shelf cabinet (with shallow drawer above) and the upper shelf is set back a bit (for seeing the bottom shelf better). It doesn't matter if 3 cups of the same size fan out into the cabinet. It's a good use of that dead space between the upper shelf and the door.

There is no problem with removing them off the hook--no twisting needed. It's as easy as unnesting the cups from a drawer, if not easier.

I like this idea for a hidden message board...also a good place to tack oft-used recipes.

I am losing the side of my fridge in my re-model, and that is a great idea!

I may do a combo of cork and chalkboard--sometimes I write a little weekly menu to remind myself of what we are having, and what the picky eater is having.

Personally, I have three sets of spoons and cups, and as they nest, they all go in a drawer. The cabinet door is for my spices, which hand by Velcro in little tins.

Will your fridge be at the end? If so, most cabinet styles have a 6" deep cab that can fit in the space at the end of the fridge. Can be used for utility storage, message center, stuff like that. I've also seen them on the ends of cabinets.

In a previous kitchen I hung our measuring cups from a rotating set of cup-hooks that attached to the bottom of an upper shelf in my baking cabinet. I have know idea where we found it, and we left it when we moved, but it was handy while I had it.

I've also tried hanging metal measuring cups on a magnetic strip inside a cabinet door. It was nice, except my magnet wasn't strong enough, and they'd sometimes come clattering down. : /

Now I have nifty plastic measuring cups that say Pampered Chef (but I didn't buy them from there) that are colored. I love knowing that the red one is 1 cup, the yellow one is a half cup, etc. They live in a drawer that defies organization at the moment.

I long to have my 1/2 Tbsp. measuring spoon again. It was plastic and I got it too close to the stove burner one day. I haven't found a replacement yet.

I live on Amazon - it's always the first stop when I need something. Alaskans really love it since we can get a lot of groceries for free shipping. Especially those who live in the 'Bush'. Dry cereal is a biggie.

After seeing your hanging strips, which I think are brilliant, I kept thinking I had seen some commercial ones somewhere. Steel would work better for me than painted or stained wood. I intended to comment on this post and tell you what a great idea this is. But, with brain out of gear, I posted the request for a commercial source without commenting on what you did. How DID you do the white lettering? It works VERY well. And I love the idea of using 5 gallon paint strips. Brilliant. Thanks for the tips.

The white lettering is from a set the site sells. You can also use a label maker.

I've seen the same idea using wood strips. I'm sure you can do it with metal. Ask someone at your local hardware store. I'll post that link below.
