I am just now reading all these amazing comments. We were going to sell our 5 bedroom house and build a “smaller” 2B2B barndominium, but plans changed due to my dad getting sick and not wanting us to move away from me. So we have decided to renovate what we have and incorporate the things I wanted into this house but I have no clue where to start. This house had NO storage. We have extra rooms I want to make one a butlers pantry that connects to my kitchen and the other I want to make a master closet. Any ideas would be appreciated

Wonderful house! what about making your DR work much harder? I think you could run tall storage along the wall where the low buffett is pictured - it has the advantage of being pretty well hidden from the door and you could use that whole wall/corner (you could get gorgeous armoires or freestanding custom cabinetry for a fraction of what a potential reno would cost) - not sure what your current furniture is in the room, but there’s no rule that says the table has to always be centered, you could always offset it a bit if you needed more elbow room for storage you could also replace two dining room chairs with a bench so it’s easy to plop down and change shoes I live in an old house and I love her but sometimes it’s challenging to make the traditional layout work for a busy family

Thanks for the feedback. I will tape out the measurements on the floor to get a better idea on appropriate sized furniture. And check out a virtual program since the home is large and much decorating is needed. Seems like a good investment. I’ll also check out other posts on this topic for more information. As far as use of room, its a family room for adults to use daily during dinner hours since it’s connected to the breakfast room and kitchen. It’s basically a waiting area for adults to relax, watch a quick tv show or news and sip on a strong beverage to wind down from a long work day or outing while dinner is being prepared. There will be a 65 inch TV on the wall Not above the fireplace. And a coffee table in the middle for cocktails to be placed. This is not a home Theater room or game room as those rooms are on the 2nd floor. This Family room is 2 story so it will be upscale but cozy and have chandelier lighting. There are also mini chandeliers on wall to allow for dimmed lighting and lounge feeling.
