MCM furniture...how do I find out about it?
Comments (12)Ach, I bet I know what I did -- I was thinking dd but I typed hh because I saw liz h. I tend to do that, I'll substitute a word that is completely not related to what I'm saying if my brain wanders over in another direction before I've finished my sentence. mortifying... Anyway, the thread I was referring to, somewhat solipsistically, was the thread about my recent thrift art finds, which evolved into talking about how social class determines the value of art/design...I find it funny that other modernist movements, say some of early Danish modern or various glass or ceramic companies esp. here in the US, which were designed to be accessible to everyday people rather than only to the rich, are now included in collections and have to go through "approved" channels, as it were. I see the point of Antiques Roadshow -- everyday people can have their items appraised with no regard to social class. Provenance still matters, but not in an obnoxious way. Speaking of which, bethpen, where did you acquire your furniture? Was it in the rental house when you bought it? Or did you get it somewhere and just put it in there as rental house furniture? You're lucky no renter knew about it :)...See Morehow would you define MCM?
Comments (2)Mid - Century Modern was a design movement from the 1930’s to the mid 60’s. Both interior design & architecture were influenced. Furniture designers such a Charles & Ray Eames, Jacobsen, Bertoia, et al , epitomized the designs of that era. Architects like Richard Neutra influenced architectural design , both residential & commercial, lots of glass, simple lines, as did Eichler. His houses are highly sought after here in OC ( So California). They appear ”modern” to me....See MoreHow would you take this room & convert the style to contemporary?
Comments (11)IMO your furnishings will instantly give a more contemporary look to the space . So post some pics of what you are planning for that. IMO a wall covered in art does not say contemporary not to mention the art gets lost .The wainscoting in that space is way too high and for sure does not lend itself to 2 colors on the wall and certainly not the dark color on top. I think we need more info about you so maybe post some pics of your home now. IMO contemporary can mean different things to different people as you can see from the pic posted. The pics in your idea books are mostly a far cry from my idea of contemporary . BTW the trim if painted the same as the walls will work....See MoreHow to decorate this MCM loft overlooking great room
Comments (3)The short answer is that you style it for whatever use you will have for it. A reading nook isn't a bad idea, but since it's open to the downstairs it's not going to be quiet if the TV is on downstairs. If this isn't going to be an issue it could work for quiet time. It looks like the previous owners had old furniture up there. I certainly don't think you should buy new furniture for it if you don't think you're going to use it. I have a loft also, although mine is not as big as yours. Mine has a daybed and a big comfy chair (old). The daybed is used very infrequently (when one particular set of out of town guests come to visit). Most of the other people in my development have home offices setup in theirs. Since most of the people who live here are retired, these aren't serious home offices in most cases. For a serious home office you need to be able to close a door to it. Since this house is new to you, you might want to just live there for a while before you do anything with this space and see if a need presents itself. There are so many things to do when you move and I think your time will be better spent focusing on areas in the house you use more often....See Morephuninthesun
