Vintage Hats

Heya dear folks-

I'd started thinking about what to do with vintage hats, and ended up brainstorming some ideas on my blog here:

In retrospect I realize it all got to be a bit heavy on the Easter decorating! But I imagine with a few less bunnies and eggs it could be adapted for a general Spring theme. :-)

Cool ideas you've done with the hats. And no, it's still chilly as heck in the NE, sure wish it'd warm up faster.

my daughter has some days at school where it's crazy hat days,
would be an idea to have a funky hat party!

Fowler Dick and Walker was also known as 'The Boston Store.' It was a regional chain founded in 1879 by Scottish immigrants-- hence the name. At its peak, there were about 9 or 10 stores located in some of the more affluent midwest and northeast cities, like Wilkes-Barre, Binghamton N.Y, Evansville Indiana, etc. FD&W specialized in above-scale mdse-- they had a "fine groceries" department, quality "sundries," clothing, etc. They were usually the mainstay of the town. They were known for their annual Christmas displays and merchandise. The last FD&Y appears to have been in Wilkes-Barre, and closed in the late 70's. A very nice store these were in their heyday.

I have about 40 or so vintage hats, I don't get to wear them much, Easter and such. Recently I lent them to lady who threw a birthday party for a friend, it was a tea party and she supplied the hats and gloves, they had a blast. Also my DH and I went to The Grand Hotel murder mystery weekend one year. Everyone dresses in period clothes. I had plenty hats, jelwery, furs and bags. It was a dream as was the rest of Mackinac Island. Vintage hats and furs are getting hard to find, I used to get them really cheap, now I hardly ever see anything pre 80's.

Ah, lynn, thanks--but it's family only :) Seriously, I do know someone whose mom was extremely into spinning/knitting and she made a sweater out of their collie's fur. WAY too hot to wear, but fascinating. I'm thinking a scarf? It's so soft. And justgotabme, we have three cats but only one really sheds visibly and collectably. Even though he's a shorthair. He seems to have a very thick coat and I comb him to keep him from getting hairballs--and just think it's a waste of -- something -- to throw the fur away. I'm sure I could wash it too. They're really soft felt-feeling little balls. Maybe a pillow, but then the softness would be lost. There are lots of things to do with lint--wish I could remember any of them! But it's basically clothing-grade fiber...I'm not as attached to it as I am to the cats' fur, so we put it outside for birds, pretty much.

Thanks ladies, You've all been so helpful. I tend to overdo things, and also know that I have too many little things on display. You were right about the dragonfly pot Les, of course I didn't 'see' it until you pointed it out. Ok, so I went into my stash of stuff in my curios and came up with this...(the flowers are from other arrangements) Both these things are memoribilia, antiques that belonged to my Mother-in-law...a three stem vase, and a copper topped glass antique ring box. I think the ring holder looks nice with the purse and key, keeping in the era, but, did I break the rules having four things on display? All you Ladies have been great, thanks for all the imput and advise... I have a few lennox vases if you think this one is too much?

Love the hats! My older sister has a cool hat collection. Every once in a while we fool around and try on all her hats.

Warmer weather? Ha! It's already close to the 90's here, and hurricane season is just around the corner. But then, I live in SW Florida! Warm weather year 'round is nice but I actually miss the 4 seasons in Chicago.

I have a large collection of old hats, some from 3 of my grandmothers, in fact. They are in storage right now, but for years I had them hanging around my bedroom - made a board with pegs every foot or so around the entire room and hung the hats, as well as old gloves, purses, and other old items on the pegs. It was cool, but I got tired of dusting after several years! That was long enough ago I didn't have a digital camera and my scanner isn't working, so no pics!

Arlene, I agree, the dusting can be a bit of a pain, depending particularly whether the material is velvety/felty or not. But I bet the look of it was lovely on the pegs.

Debbie, I too can't resist at least trying on the vintage hats. I found a fun yellow flapper-styled one over the weekend for $5. It's probably not a good look for me, but boy was it fun. :-)
