Has anyone painted a laminated desk?

I have an old laminate desk that I want to dress up for a sewing/craft table. Does anyone have any ideas for changing the looks of the table top? I fear a painted service may show marks easily. Thanks for your help.

I would sand it so paint will stick to it, prime it with my favorite primer (Zinsser primer, available at HD and Lowes), then paint with any good brand of semi-gloss paint. Here's a link fot the Paint Forum, where the paint experts are. Linda

I'm not sure what to tell you, but I'm thinking of reverse stenciling my tv stand using ferns. When you say laminate do you mean melamine? There is paint for that. My tv stand is faux wood, paper like stuff glued over whatever board. I was thinking of spraying it with some acrylic urethane first to waterproof it before painting.

Another idea would be to decoupage a pretty tissue paper on the top and then urethane it with several coats. I've been reading about contact paper they now make a "stainless steel" one, wonder how that would be for a work surface. if you could find some you could check it out.

All you need to do is to pull the DW out and paint the particle board with two coats of primer. Done. If you want to go the extra mile, use a coat of color matching paint on top of the primer so that you never see any of the particle board at all. I'd do this around the sink edge as well. That's a far worse spot for water infiltration than over the DW. Or you can staple 6 mil poly sheeting to the underside of the counter and dab a bit of caulk over the staples. Some have even made a "cube" of the poly, covering the adjacent wood sides of the cabinets as well. Or you can buy a condensing dry type of DW that doesn't vent like almost every single stainless interior one on the market. It will be quieter and the tub won't turn orange from tomato sauce as well.

I did mine and although it took a while, it wasn't hard. It's held up fine to our abuses, but I did do a faux distressed zinc look so that abuses wouldn't look out of place. I do food prep on a glass cutting board and a wood one for easy clean up. No big deal. Here's a pic of before and after. Like you, I couldn't stand to look at it anymore. I did not sand. Use SW Prep Rite Pro Block primer, painted, the sealed with about 3 coats of poly. It looks so much better! Before After

I have the Basalt Slate counters as well. We are getting close to 2 years since installation. I love the way they look, but overall have not been thrilled with them. Mine aren't honed, just the matte finish, and it does scratch quite easily, though the scratches are only visible in certain lights and from certain angles. Just last week I discovered a very visible chip right in front of the cooktop on the island. I am really upset. I don't know what caused it, and have had laminate counters all my life without a problem like this. I didn't love our fabricator, but I have no idea if it has to do with fabrication. So, while I love the look, and was perfectly happy to have laminate counters, I can't say I would get this particular counter again. If I could afford it, I'd replace the island top right now and just leave them on the perimeter. Sorry to be a downer. Until I got this counter I would have been completely gung-ho about laminate. Now I'm not so sure. . .

Either laminate or melamine - both have to be sanded before painting. A fair amount of work, unfortunately. Replacement shelves might be found in stock sizes - would just swapping out for white shelves help you?

I painted a laminated kitchen table. The laminate was originally a shiny black surface - the kind that scratches as soon as you look at it. I have redone this same table several times not because of wear- only because I need to redecorate. This last resurfacing was done to match my very real granite counter.
