'Clean up on aisle 12'...a cautionary tale

Went to a big box home improvement store yesterday to pick up grout in between calls on my regular customers. Done it a bunch of times - the 10 lb bags are on a shelf just about eye level, so I grab the one I want and go. This time they were in a box cut at an angle on the sides so they'd stay upright...no problem, stepped real close to the shelves, grabbed the top of the bag, lifted it up about 3" and started bringing it down toward me....BIG mistake! The bottom had a fair sized hole in the seam...next thing I know I'm standing there covered head to toe in bone colored grout! I'm talking hair, nostrils, glasses, purse, new white shoes, mouth, red polo.....everywhere! Figure I got about a pound or so on me, the rest on the floor. Oh course, had to go stalking about the store like that to find an employee. Finally found one who was rather blase' about the whole thing - as though shoppers **always** wander around in clouds of grout!

So-o-o-o, the moral of the tale is: Unless you're fond of the 'dusty' look, lift the bag up, but NOT toward you until you're CERTAIN it isn't leaking! No idea how often this happens, but after it did I noticed quite a few grout 'hills' on a couple of other shelves. May have simply been a batch of poorly sealed bags, but wanted ya'll to be careful!

OHMYGOODNESS, and after a lesson in safety and health issues from Riana, I'd say it w/be a good idea when going to buy grout/mortar to take your mask. Bless your heart. Not a fun experience, I'm sure.

Oh how embarrassing. We had the same thing happen with thinset. Luckily it only poured all over our shoes and socks. But never really did get it out of the seams in our shoes.

Too funny, Kellie! At just 3 weeks post-op, I am still frustrated that putting on a regular bra is impossible! I can only manage the step-in stretch ones. * I part my hair on the right side and can't seem to do that either now. * Cutting anything with ANY pair of my scissors is totally impossible! * I've taught myself to write with my left hand, as it will probably be 4-5 more weeks before they pull the pins out. I'm proud to say that I can now print and write in cursive as well as any second grader! * I still clunk DH in the head and shoulders with my cast while we sleep, poor guy! *My long-time dentist would have a fit if he knew what chores I use my teeth to help me with these days. * I can't tie my shoes, button buttons or zip up my winter jacket, so I spend most days in yoga pants and sandals. Socks are a nightmare to get on! * DH has to cut much of my food and I eat like a toddler, aiming my food straight into my mouth which, I'm sure looks so strange! * My wonderful, ingeniously designed (expensive) arm cast cover works like a charm when taking a shower. I just pray all arm circulation is not permanently damaged by using it. Still, I'm staying clean and I don't stink (LOL)! * I 've learned the hard way to check if my cast will fit through a sleeve BEFORE I slip a top or sweater over my head and try to shimmy my cast through! But, it's getting a bit easier every day, so I can't complain too much. In the whole grand scheme of things, life could be a whole lot worse. I'm just glad that I can laugh at myself. Lynn

I found a little green squiggly critter in my Gai Lan the other day. Figured he'd made it through harvest, travel and being bagged and shelved at the little Asian market where I bought his dinner for mine so I recklessly released her/him (it was hard to tell) into my beets in my garden. How could I squash such a survivor? I'm not bothered by finding the occasional eensy weensy squiggly thing in my veggies. Likely they were born there, and have eaten nothing but, so they are simply nature-processed...how much factory-processed food do we eat that is likely far dirtier and has a far greater likelihood of inimical contamination? On the other hand, plump, well grown tomato hornworms give me the heebie-jeebies and I simply cannot make myself pluck them off the plant with my hand...I needs must get a pair of gloves or snip the stem off, gross critter intact, whereupon I put it out in the feeding tray for one of our resident Blue Jays to discover and devour. Go figure.

re: smell. The first time we toured, the rugs were still wet from being cleaned and there was a candle burning. We did note an odor and asked because the seller disclosure checked pet stains but did not list more specifics in the required box. We were told they had big collies and they were very dog smelly dogs. The second time, we noted the odor and also noted a mattress upstairs were a small child slept was urine stained, so we attributed the smell to an incontinent child. The sellers refused to leave the house before close and we did not have an opportunity to tour the house empty prior to close. Had we had that opportunity, we would have noted the smell remained, and was actually worse once their things were out and candles weren't burning, etc. Upon sending photos to the RA, we learned the family confessed to knowledge the dogs urinated in the home. A neighbor was even aware of it .... So, we are just saving receipts and will explore our options. There are other things -- they removed television mounts from the walls, took a basketball hoop bolted to cement in the ground, removed other items that were screwed or bolted into walls.

Polished marble counters: a cautionary tale

My marble got scratches like that from my cousin moving his laptop on it. Those were the first scratches. Since then (3.5 years), I have probably a hundred different scratches. Many from the bottoms of ceramic bowls sliding across the counter. I can see them when I look for them, but they have blended in with the etches. My marble is honed, but the scratches look just like yours. Oh and staining - I don't know why there is a worry about staining. I seal with Miracle 511 (I think that's the name). I've done it twice. Need to do it again but haven't got around to it. Mustard powder definitely leaves a yellow hue, but <gasp> a quick wipe down with Clorox Cleanup takes the yellow right away! I've cleaned up red dye with Clorox Cleanup off my marble also. I don't know if there's a rule about using it or not (I'm thinking most people say no), but I use it whenever there is a little color that doesn't come off with the dish rag and have no issue. I love my marble. It scratches and etches and looks well-loved! (Statuary marble by the way.)

Sorry to hear about your calamity!!!(Welcome to My World!lol!) I just told DH, after getting back from Mexico, that I'll slow down on the spending, just spent almost $100 at the tile store!! BAD JANE!!! But I HAD to have this new color grout called Slate, it's got a blue/charcoal tinge to it, and of course they only sell outdoor grout in 25lb bags! What's a girl to do??? Today I'll grout my new BB and the Shower door window with it!! Ya! A grouting day!

OH! How awful. I think Home Depot gets all the really bad sales people. They are not friendly or helpful at ALL. I just hope you didn't get anything in your eyes....

I'm sure that wasn't any fun...probably a good thing you WERE wearing glasses so hopefully it kept it out of your eyes. It's too bad that the employee wasn't more sympathetic, after all, you ruined a whole outfit! They should have offered you a discount or something at least on your purchase.

Well...I know I should feel sorry for you, but I can't quit laughing..been there myself and I know how you feel.I do not understand why all the bags leak. It happens all over the country. I guess next time I will ask for a plastic bag on my way to the grout aisle or do like Calam and get it at the tile store. I am glad you survived and didn't inhale.

No, I went home, showered and changed then got back to work - good thing that I set my own schedule! That darn grout was so itchy and stuck to my eyebrows like crazy... always wondered what I'd look like with blonde-ish hair...not a good.. LOL. Unfortunately I had inhaled just a bit before I realized the hole was there, so grout was in my nostrils and even on my lips...YUCK!!
