I put one on a post just to have it turn in the wind! I set another old 'stand' fan--with the cover removed- out too. I painted each blade a solid color! Those blades were plastic and a hard wind turned it over and broke some corners off. It still turns, and is now weighted down. just not as 'pretty'! I use the wire covers as 'baskets' to plant in..... I would have bought them too!!! Carol, yours looks great!

15 years of fan blade junk which I wouldn't have even thought of until we were working on our vaulted ceiling. I looked down and saw the tops of my fan blades and was shocked. They were black black. The best thing to use is Goof Off. I tried everything else mentioned above and none of it worked. I had some Goof Off in my laundry room and it took that sticky tarry black stuff right off my fan blades without any damage. I sprayed each blade and by the time I got back around to the first blade I was able to get the first layer off. I sprayed it again and worked on the next blade. The 2nd time around the rest just wiped right off and they looked brand new. Good Off works like magic. The only warning I would give is put a towel or cloth down underneath your fan on the floor. The Goof Off over-spray is very slippery and I almost wiped out on my tile floor.

Did you try Suburban fan? They sell replacement fan blades for Leslie-Lock fan. You may have to change the fan motor and the blade. It should not be too difficult if the new motor and blade are designed to fit the old housing. Give us a call ! You will be glad that you did ! Agreeing with Bossy and with Walnutcreek. Yep, my house looks messy with mud dauber nests around the front door, but I do clean them off when the young ones have emerged ... :-) And yes, a mud dauber nest can get a little heavy and would throw off the balance of the blades so I would certainly remove it. Interestingly, paper wasps built a nest on the blade tip of my Mom's covered patio ceiling fan. She always kept it set on a slow speed and when she turned it on whatever wasps that were on the nest held on for dear life going around and around with the fan, but when it was turned off their life continued as usual. Being interrupted like that their nest never got very big, and since they didn't bother anyone either Mom just left it. It wasn't heavy enough to throw off the balance. We just laughed about what they must be 'thinking' when their nest became a merry-go-round.
