Ceiling fan blade color

I purchased a 10 year old home that I have been slowly updating - goodbye honey oak and shiny brass door knobs.

Each bedroom and the living room has a lighted ceiling fan. The fans are brushed nickel and have shiny "rosewood" blades. This isn't our forever home and I can't spend the money to replace the fans, but I would like to update them a bit. Fan blades seem like an inexpensive update.

The living room floor is a light oak - should the blades match the floor? What color blades would look good?

I love updating fans. It is easy and inexpensive and you can get a look like no other. How you do it depends on you. Some people like to have it disappear like voila. Some like it to be a decorating accent. This is what I have done in our 40 year old house so far.

Before picture in my son's room. You can't see it well. Sorry. Basically it is the standard brass and wood look.

We're going for a more modern look in his room. I painted the metal a kind of hammered silver and then the blades a kind of teal. Ignore the popcorn ceiling. That is is still on the To Do list. I loved these pulls I found - they are a light bulb and fan. A little more than I normally do because changed the shades as well.

This in my daughter's room:

We stenciled the flowers with a silver sharpie. Then used a little bling.

So if you want the fans to blend in to the ceiling it would be really easy to do with white spray paint. You could do the whole thing or just the blades.

If you want to keep it real conservative and keep the wood then I would do the oak.

What other colors do you have in the room?

I think ceiling fans should disappear into the ceiling, in other words white. Our current home had indoor/outdoor aqua metal and beige plastic bladed ceiling fans in the living and family room, I kid you not, when we bought it. I found new white fans for the bedrooms were cheaper than buying new blades. Seriously, I purchased fans at Lowes for $39.00 for the guest bedrooms. So check the price of blades vs. new fans, although ours did not have lights, and we replaced the living room fan with a chandelier.

15 years of fan blade junk which I wouldn't have even thought of until we were working on our vaulted ceiling. I looked down and saw the tops of my fan blades and was shocked. They were black black. The best thing to use is Goof Off. I tried everything else mentioned above and none of it worked. I had some Goof Off in my laundry room and it took that sticky tarry black stuff right off my fan blades without any damage. I sprayed each blade and by the time I got back around to the first blade I was able to get the first layer off. I sprayed it again and worked on the next blade. The 2nd time around the rest just wiped right off and they looked brand new. Good Off works like magic. The only warning I would give is put a towel or cloth down underneath your fan on the floor. The Goof Off over-spray is very slippery and I almost wiped out on my tile floor.

Wow, overwhelming "yes" on the white! Thank you everyone! I decided to go for it and painted them this afternoon. I used Krylon spray paint and I really should have put primer on them first. I lost count of how many coats of paint I sprayed on them. I think it looks so much better now. What do ya'll think?? barb5, the pull chains do have faceted crystal balls on them. There's also a prism hanging from each arm on the light fixture. Here's a close-up photo showing them. I'm surprised that many of you said keep the wood on the island! When we decided to put an island in, I couldn't get a top to match my countertops because I've had them ever since dinosaurs roamed. LOL! The wood was just a desperate measure to have a top for the island. I've always thought I should have all the counters the same, but maybe I need to rethink that.

I don't think antique brass goes with light wood tones. You need at least a rich midtone. I think painting the blades white would just make the metal stand out more (brass is lovely, but motors and brackets usually aren't meant to be have starring roles). I also think it would look like you took an old fan and tried to make it new -- not always the look you are after. I have antique brass with cherry blades in my LR and don't find it heavy at all. I do have 10 ft ceilings.

NotTina, most fan blades are two sided, I'd check that before you buy new fans or blades. If the other side does not match, or complement, the floor, I'd spray paint them as Patty did. Which I happen to love. I too like the ceiling fan to be an accent in the room, as any regular light fixture would be, so I love what she did.

You can paint the blades the color of the ceiling and make them vanish.

I love the little fan and lightbulb pulls -- how cute! I agree that checking the other side of the blade is the first step.

Did you take down the fans to paint? How did you paint the metal? If I want to paint a nickel fan base a matte off white, with matching blades...what would you recommend?

Ceiling color!!! I have no A/C so I need my ceiling fan in my vaulted living room. When we bought the house it was a black fan and was like a huge hulking spider. Now it's a creamy white, the same color as my walls and ceiling and I don't even see it.
