Hey igloochic, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to convert others. Just something I've become convinced about by own research (definately not a chemical engineer, but do have a science degree so feel somewhat able to follow the arguments pro and con). I've found talking to other moms that while they have concerns, they aren't finding other options, so I thought I'd throw this out there for those who are looking. The Swiss bottles are the Siggs I mentioned above and like I say they work, but we find them hard to clean and can't get cubes in them. The klean kanteen isn't cheap either, but a bit less than the sigg bottles. Does anyone out there know if it's true about the tetra paks and milk cartons being lined in plastic?

Having lived in rural areas for most of my life, water quality is high on my concern list. As a child, our farm well water was the best IMO. The last 30 years, have been surrounded by folks who use excess pesticides, fertilizers and at times, even dump old motor oil in fence rows. Nearly all rural wells are contaminated with chemicals usual water tests do not detect. In one area, no infants were to have the water in formula due to all the excess agricultural fertilizer in the water. Currently, we invested in a filter(whole house) and distillation (for food prep and drinking), system for our city water source. We are shocked at the debris picked up by the filter. Before we installed this system, our skin was constantly itchy and excessively dry despite natural lotions. The water smelled like an open chlorax jug at times. No more. When we travel locally, we take our own water in SS mugs or glass jars. Have heard of some scientists who now suggest double distilled water for all drinking and cooking. Quite interesting that most breweries use complex water filtration systems to maintain quality. Wonder how soon safe water will cost more than gasoline? cella jane

I do have a collection of tiny brushes (plus pipe cleaners) for cleaning the hummingbird feeders, and so I could use those for these bottles. The hole is too small to go over a tine in the upper rack of the DW. The recylcing info is in Japanese only. Last week-end I had dozens of hummingbirds, and they had been going through the sugar water so fast that I had to refill the feeders every week. So I added more sugar water to one of the feeders, and then they suddenly stopped coming, although a few of them are back today. I have two feeders, and so they are never without, even if one goes dry. I guess they moved to someone else's yard temporarily. Normally I only have Allen's hummers (which are the most territorial), but lately I have been having a lot of Anna's visit, and I am trying to encourage them. It is a pain to clean the feeders, but the ones I have now are easier than the old ones I had, which is when I bought the assorted brush cleaners. The brushes are good to have anyway. Lars
