Japanese plastic micro bottles for Dinohio

Dinohio wanted to see what my Japanese plastic pig bottles looked like, and so rather than bury the photo in that thread, I thought I would post the photo here.

Maybe someone has ideas of what to do with them! The larger bottles behind hold 13.5cc, which is 2-3/4 teaspoon, and I filled them with Habanero sauce. I do not consider these bottles to be reusable, and so I had planned to put samples of hot sauce in them and give them to people or take them with me when I might need it. I think that if I put soy sauce in them, I would reuse them, but not so sure about Habanero sauce, although I could probably put more Habanero sauce in them - just not anything else.

I believe they are meant to be used with Bento Boxes. They would be difficult to clean, I think, which is why I think they are not meant to be reusable - or are they??

Can you look up the recycle info? If it's #5 PP, you can wash the plastic. That's the kind of thing that can do well in a machine, put over a tine in the upper rack, though you might have to tie it down. :) The lids can go in a mesh bag. The bottle can as well, but won't clean as well.

They do make brushes that will work if you want to wash by hand. Look for ones that are meant for cleaning sippy cups and straws.

The pig bottles are dead cute!

Growing in containers, even very large containers, is much different than growing in ground. It is a unique method with its own needs and requirements. Not only are roots confined and so coil within the containers but nutrients leach out of containers every time you water and those are only 2 of the differences. You can learn about many others over on the Container gardening forum. As Kevin said, soil (dirt) in any container is normally considered a no because it compacts, drains poorly, causes root rot, etc.. Standard, pH balanced, soil-less mixes are readily available for container growing and there are recipes for making your own mixes on the container forum. Plus lots of good informative reading there too. And compost and organic nutrient supplies also have limited applications in containers for the reasons he explained - no soil micro herd to convert them to a useable form of nutrients. Your nettle soup and comfey leaves sounds good in theory but is rarely used in actual practice because it provides little useable nutrients as it passes quickly through the container and what is does supply lacks P and K and micronutrients.. For those reasons I would hesitate to grow more than 1 plant in any of the containers as given your mix and fertilizing plans it will be difficult to supply sufficient nutrients and to sustain proper soil moisture levels for more than 1. Hello everyone, i have been so busy have not had time to write. I finally finished the second bed,and spent the weekend looking for different types of compost. I only found three,all the rest are basically the same in Florida at least around here. I did find one Blueberry bush ,YEAH ,seems healthy... I changed the soil and transplanted to a bigger pot I have it in the morning sun and afternoon shade we will see. I planted some watermelon in 2 of the block cells as an experiment they are growing quick and seem happy.. I planted some tomatoes in containers and have them next to the blueberries.I also planted an herb garden in 2 containers i had for awhile they contain, Rosemary,basil,parsley,thyme,oregano,also some spearmint and peppermint. Within 2 days the Bugs have located and began thier attack,whiteflies and mites i belive..... i have been holding them off with palmolive and water. A friend told me ivory soap 2 tblespoons mixed in 1 quart warm water or liquid castile soap same mix,works well I'll try it.... I have to get the soil in the beds this weekend and finish mulching around the beds...I kickin around with idea of micro sprinkler sytem on a timer.They are fairly inexpensive and would work well with my goofy schedule. I have not recieved my worms yet but the compost pile seems to be doing well.Guess i'll have to call uncle Jim's and see what the delay is.. Almost forgot i ordered my muscadine grapes they will be here in Oct,along time to wait but i need to prepare the soil anyway so it worrks out well.. Hmm....now I feel a bit archaic. I have garden gloves....heavy duty gloves for when I see bugs around....great pruners...a pair of scissors for when I can't find the pruners....a bonsai sieves....4-5 mixing bowls of various sizes....2 spoons, one small and one serving spoon sized that serves as a mini shovel (that was a serving spoon). I think that's it in terms of tools. And a sharpie pen. i mean, I have a shovel and fork, too. Oh can't forget my drill -- with a diamond bur bit and a plastic cutting one. But in recent months, my wonderful guy has been helping in the yard since I'm basically dead by day's end. Make no mistake, I appreciate it. But since then, in those TWO months, we now have the following: - tiller - chainsaw thing, obnoxious looking - pickaxe looking thing - regular axe - trimmer (not sure what he planned to trim as nobody touches my plants but me unless I want it pulled out, in which case...what ya trimming?) - pruners as tall as me for the tree he will trim IF my gardener does not...(?) - a couple extra drills... (I mean, he made me one raised bed...) - endless screws (for that one raised bed) - enough lumber to build 4 more beds...(?) - the longest extension cord ever in obnoxious RED There's more. I just don't know the names of them all, LOL. Let's be real, Neil. The MAN who dies with the most tools wins! :)

I do have a collection of tiny brushes (plus pipe cleaners) for cleaning the hummingbird feeders, and so I could use those for these bottles. The hole is too small to go over a tine in the upper rack of the DW.

The recylcing info is in Japanese only.

Last week-end I had dozens of hummingbirds, and they had been going through the sugar water so fast that I had to refill the feeders every week. So I added more sugar water to one of the feeders, and then they suddenly stopped coming, although a few of them are back today. I have two feeders, and so they are never without, even if one goes dry. I guess they moved to someone else's yard temporarily. Normally I only have Allen's hummers (which are the most territorial), but lately I have been having a lot of Anna's visit, and I am trying to encourage them. It is a pain to clean the feeders, but the ones I have now are easier than the old ones I had, which is when I bought the assorted brush cleaners. The brushes are good to have anyway.

Thank you Lars, they are adorable! They will come in handy, and are bigger than the 1/8 ounce Tabasco bottles that we sometimes find and use.

I think I saw some in that Japanese store near 99 Range supermarket when I was in LA.

To clean, use a dental Waterjet, if you have one.

I agree that 1/8 ounce is not enough - the rectangular bottles are almost 1/2 oz, and that seems reasonable - especially for the Habanero sauce. They also squirt very easily, as the plastic is soft.

I do have a dental waterjet, and so I could try using that for cleaning. Good idea, Dcarch! I got my bottles at Mitsuwa in Mar Vista, but their inventory always changes, especially for things like this. They might have them at Daiso Japan on Sawtelle (Little Osaka), but I do not go there as often, although I like a lot of restaurants in that neighborhood.
