Pantry Panic!-Cabinet style (pics)

We met with the cabinet guy yesterday, and I realize we didn't go into detail on the pantry.

The area is two 36 in full height cabinets, 24in deep. We can't make them more shallow as there is a bev center and desk there.

They will also be holding some cleaning supplies, random rarely used appliances, as well as food.

My questions are these:

Should I have the pantry cabinets split in equal heights or taller on the bottom? My husband is 6'3 and I am 5'8.

If taller on the bottom, what height? I can't find a standard height.

With 60" in or so lowers, we could make shelves 18in deep and put these Rev-a-shelf organizers on the doors. (They are 4in deep.)

Or should we just put in pull out shelves?

Is there a standard spacing between pantry pullout shelf heights? I still need room for things like cereal.

Sorry for the panic. I have just planned out the rest of the space and my brain is completely fried.

My architect spec'ed the pantry doors to line up with the countertop which my cabinet maker said is what most KD do now. The other option is to line them up with the wall cabinets which neither of your options show. Also we went with all pullouts on cabinets up to eye level and shelves above (for cereal boxes mostly). Visually you should try a few options and perhaps play with the depth variation. We had a half the space that you have.That's alot of pantry space - lucky you!

Thanks. That's something I hadn't thought of. I like the idea of pullout shelves up to eye level.

Both Ccoombs1 & Buehl's pantry's are corner types. Mine is just on the flat wall and rectangular. Its 4' along the back wall and then approx 2' deep. I think I will put shelves along one side of the 2' depth and then along the back wall (like an L). The L will be on the right side and the door will be shifted to the left side. So if there were 12" deep shelves at a min on the L side, I would have approx 30" or so of opening for a door or doors. If any shelf was deeper, then it would be smaller. If it was a single door it would swing right. Immediately to the left of the pantry is the doorway to the hallway. So there is a space issue here and therefore tying to see how small of a door I can put in and still be comfortable to get in and out as well as access the stuff on the right side that forms the L. Does this make sense? A friend of mine has the same door on hers. Can't remember though if you can see the stuff on the shelves through it or not. This style is on my list if a single door would work.

ilovetn, I got them at a place called Storables, which has a website with a list of store locations. If there isn't one near you, you might try the websites of the manufacturers...The rolling bins on the floor (wheels are optional) and the rectangular ones on the 2nd shelf are made by Iris USA, Inc. The ones on the bottom shelf, that have handles like a pitcher, are made by Buddeez. Bunches of thoughts: - Pantries are THE BEST. - Hate barn doors. They require a large amount of space "to park", and they're a trend. - Yes, pocket doors are the hardest to open, but are you really going to close the pantry door often? I personally would leave it open except when I had visitors. - Do these double doors have "swing away hinges" so they'll lay flat against the wall? If not, they should. - I think a pantry is a good place for a swing door (not the same thing as swing-away hinges) because you can push the door /enter without using your hands. - Best question on this thread: What do you need in terms of function? Do you need to be able to keep pets or children out of the pantry? .... I'd add to it, do you plan to store (or use) small appliances in the pantry? Do you plan to have a second fridge or a freezer in the pantry? What do you personally store in your pantry? Do you need deep storage for 24-packs of soda? Do you can? Do you have a lot of linens? - Pay attention to your corners -- none of your inspiration pix particularly do a good job with this. Consider simple /strong Lazy Susans, which you can buy at Bed, Bath & Beyond for your corners. Perfect for your jars. I currently have THE LARGEST Lazy Susans in my pantry ... and I wish they were medium-sized. Jars get lost in the middle. - Things to include in your pantry: A couple outlets, motion-sensored lights, and a hook to hang your broom. - Pointing out the obvious: Those three pantry inspiration pix you shared are absolutely lovely, but they're also STAGED. Everything's perfectly laid out, balanced, so nice ... gthigpen's pantry is more realistic: It's a very nice, large space ... but clearly no one spent hours arranging it for a photo shoot. (That's no insult -- it's a real space.) All of us know that our actual pantries contain those half-loaves of bread, a mismatch of soup cans, etc. Don't fall for staging. - I like these doors best ... but only if they're on swing hinges ...and if you're going with the glass, be sure it's a bit opaque ... light is the enemy of food storage.

My split lines up with the bottom of the upper cabinets -55" - (which I had never noticed until I just went and measured) and even though they are not beside any uppers the line goes right around the kitchen. We have pullouts on the bottom and the upper has fixed shelves. The bottom two shelves we can reach most of the stuff but the top shelf is where I put seldom used stuff.

We have one 36" pantry with 2 deep drawers + silverware drawer on the bottom (it's right next to our table) and 3 pull outs + 2 fixed shelves on top. The 3 pull outs hold canned and jarred items, the bottom fixed shelf holds cereal boxes and the top fixed shelf holds extra paper towels and extra boxes of wrap.

I love the pull outs because no reach in space is needed between shelves--items can be piled high. The spacing of the pull outs is adjustable (like adjustable shelves.)

The drawers are useful for holding bagged and smaller light weight items. The bottom deep drawer holds boxes and bags of pasta and the upper deep drawer holds bags of snack bottoms + misc small items such as granola bars, craisins, etc.

We also have a 24" wide pantry with 2 pull outs on the bottom, a shallow drawer, and then 3 pull outs, 2 fixed shelves, and a fixed shelf with vertical dividers at the top. We use this one for our baking center.

The bottom pull outs in the bakery counter gives me a convenient place to put small appliances.

My thing when designing the kitchen was flexibility. It was nice being able to reconfigure the baking pantry by putting in the extra shelf with verticals. I wouldn't want a large cabinet with a lot of small spaces that I'm stuck with forever more (i.e. the rev a shelf pantry above.)

blfenton, I hadn't even thought of lining it up with the bottom of the uppers. As you can see, there is an upper there. May need to see what that looks like.

Agree with you all about pullouts on the lowers, maybe to eye level?

zelmar, thank you for the pics. This will really help to show my DH and the cab guy. If I do use a reva shelf, it would just be on the door, not the interiors, but that's a good point about having the full use of the pullout shelf.
I like the idea of having part of it be a baking center. I have some spots dedicated to cookie sheets and cutting boards, but DH pointed out that I have a lot of things that need some vertical storage like muffin tins.
