Anyone made the Toothbrush Rugs yet??

I'm using mostly cotton bed sheets bought at local thrift shops. Turning someone else's trash into my money making treasure! I've been posting this question for a couple of years now, but haven't run into anyone else who's making them. I was looking to swap patterns or exchange tips on making them. It's sometimes hard parting with the gently used, almost perfect condition, higher end label sheets. I sometimes can't bring myself to cutting them into strips! I don't have any pics of my rugs, but you can search for an image on google.

I made two of them years ago. My first one turned out like a mexican hat, as I did not put enough stitches on the corner.
It was fun, but I sort of stopped hobbies until I catch up on other chores.

This is something I think I want to get into at some point. I just haven't found the time yet! I have too many things going at once now....sigh....

these mid-century recessed toothbrushes holders were made by hall-mack and are rather rare and hard to come by now. Here are pictures of my 2 Sarouks: This first is in the family room, it's about 15 by 15 dated probably from the 40's. My parents bought it used in 1962. And here is toward the center: And the back of the same rug. It is considered a coarse Sarouk because if how few knots per inch...but you will notice there are more than your rug: And this is the rug in the living room. It was bought new 49 years ago. It has seen grape juice, red wine diapers, spilled milk and even a cigarette burn or 2, and I defy you to find any spots. And here's the back of that rug, it has almost twice as many knots per square inch as the other one. Linda C

I tear my strips in 1 1/2" width. I cut with scissors for the first 2" all along the width them tear the rest of the way. The first one I made is about 2 1/2 feet x 2 feet. I read somewhere if you are going to use heavy thick fabric such s denim its easier to work with in thinner strips. You can really make them as wide as you wish. The first one I made was all wavey and look more like a potato chip. But after walking on it it flattened out. Someone said you have to "train" them to be a rug. Put them on the floor and walk on it jump up and down and say...be a rug, be a rug, be a rug..it worked!! I washed mine in wash machine and threw in dryer, it was fine. I guess you could dry outdoors also. Lot of strings came off it the first time I washed it so make sure you have one of those strainer things on water hose to tub so it doesn't clog your drain. There is a formula for figuring how long to make the first row (making an oval rug) the dimensions, I can't seem to find it...I'm looking.

I ended up finding the first rug for a good price on Wayfair! Here it is in the room :) Please excuse the toys, haven't managed to get them contained still and it's our main living area so they keep getting brought back out. Up next: new end tables and some decor on the walls? Hooks by the door will be staying even though they're not super pretty, in his case functionality wins! I am thinking of maybe a wide piece of art above and a tall skinny piece beside the hooks to make them look purposeful... Thanks everyone for your help!

i have made several rugs.i have made a round table rug for our oak dining table.i made chair rugs.all out of cotton fabric.
the first rugs i did while we took amtrack vacations.easy to have all supplies in a bag.
i haven't made any for a few years.i have a bag ready to go.with remodeling,gardening and cloth doll making the rugs have taken a back seat.i have also made a window frame rug.you can google hand made rugs and come up with a lot of variations. a wagon wheel was also used in rug making.

ha and im thinking finally something I can do with old tooth brushes lol...i guess i should just stick with painting lol
