Chrome or Brushed Nickel - Which finish holds up the best?
Comments (6)At the 10 year mark it's possible that brushed nickel will be horribly dated like brass (I don't mind dated finishes but some folks sure do). Chrome really is durable. Unbeatably so. Look at old Buicks! I do have some 80 year old nickel faucets (hot and cold) that look a bit weathered but the nickel is still good. Of course, it started off shiny and is probably not what they are currently using for "nickel". I think for nickel, you need to compare specific manufacturers--the colors of the finish vary and the composition must as well. I had brushed nickel hardware (door handles and cabinet pulls) installed my the PO in my last house and after less than 5 years, the more used ones were worn smooth. I didn't mind, but you could sure see which cabinet had the good towels and which one had the cleaning supplies (insert blushing face here). For durability (and for not being in fashion enough to go out of fashion), I think chrome is the way to go unless you dislike it....See MoreWhich brands have yellowish tint to brushed /satin nickel?
Comments (14)Yes, I like this faucet very much and no, it didn't take long at all to get used to it...from what I recall, just a couple of days. The nice thing about this (and most similar) is that the handle can be on the right, left, or in front. If in front, there's less water dripping onto the counter than when on the sides. If I had it to do over, I would probably have put the handle on the front for just that reason. To turn the water on/off, you move the handle away or toward the stem. To adjust the temperature, you move the handle back and forth. I don't think it's more difficult than controlling it via a handle on top, just different. The sprayer works great! It locks on either spray or stream and "remembers" what you last used when you turn it on. My DH likes to use the spray mode, I prefer stream. But, since my DH uses it most of the time, it stays in spray for him (unless I've used it!) If you look at the handle in this picture, you can see that it's pulled "away" from the stem of the faucet ("on") and that it's straight up for lukewarm water (this pic also shows you that you can "lock" the head in any direction to reach all parts of the sink): I also have a pullout faucet at the prep sink that works very well. The faucet on our main/cleanup sink (the one pictured above) is the Kohler Vinnata in brushed nickel (K-690-BN). The faucet on our prep sink (the one I use the most) is the Kohler Fairfax, again, in brushed nickel (K-12177-BN). Pictured below:...See MoreWould Polished Chrome or Brushed Nickel look better? Comments (21)"lynn2006: Ohh, good point - we'll have to consider what looks best with ss appliances! We're planning on doing our own trim for the Ikea cabinets, so I've done a bunch of googling on paint matches. I read that Simply White (which happens to be our trim color for our casings; I love it) is a match for Lindingo. While Ben Moore's Cloud White and Ralph Lauren's (potentially discontinued) Studio White WW09 are good matches for Adel White. The Adel White Ikea cover panels that we bought Do Not seem to match the doors!!! They are a brighter white and much glossier!! I don't know if we are the only ones with that problem, but we are returning them and plan to make our own (hopefully better matching, and cheaper!) cover panels instead. (This may have been more info than you wanted - sorry about that!)" Thank you for letting me know since I have not looked at Ikea yet and I had planned to go with the shaker door and drawer without any slab drawers and fell in love with the inset but Home depot is having a sale and I got a good price on fancier doors that I first thought were not my taste but they are growing on me when I saw the price and how much better storage I would have and they are close to the BM Cloud White color which is what I wanted. I may have to take a trip to Ikea and back to the local store with the inset cabinets and then price it all out. Home Depot is offering free trash can and recycling bin and organizers, free hardware (but I am having a touching time falling in love with the free hardware), free double silver ware drawer, free paint finish upgrade, free pull out shelves (but I really wanted drawers) and I am waiting for a price on the granite counters and the removal of the soffit, removal of the old cabinets and the tile installation. I love the Ikea organizers and my others choice is covering the soffit with trim since the bigger cabinets are pretty but I am not even 5 feet and have enough problems reaching selves right now and need a stool and ladder for the higher shelves. I am not sure which to vote for yet since I have not begun this process yet but I chose the chrome for my bathroom since I liked the bling....See MoreBrushed Stainless vs Brushed Nickel vs Satin Nickel Finshes
Comments (6)"...but the stores are a nightmare this week..." Oh, jaxo! I needed to be in a major department store poking around the housewares/linens section this week. The crowds weren't bad, but the really bad Christmas music almost drove me to distraction! Most of it seemed to be the quality of "Grandma got run over by a reindeer." Heaven forbid they should venture into some of the lovely classical recordings....See Morecelineike
