looking for ways to use my zillions of buttons for bracelets or any other jewelry or crafty items. any instructions or ideas out there? thanks, molly again

I think you should post this on the Craft and Decorations site. I have used buttons to make push pins. They are really cute. I used liquid nails for the glue, it holds great. Mary Ann

When it comes to any sort of fertilizer and teeny new roses, LESS IS MORE. Newly-planted roses should not be fertilized until after their first flush of bloom. I'm sure people do it, but the results here have been disastrous. They DON'T need nitrogen at this stage. That would push top-growth and bloom production, which you don't want until there are roots to support it. Just keep 'em watered (not drowned, but watered) and protected from blasting sun. Remove any buds that form. Doing that will force the plant to grow roots, rather than topgrowth and bloom. And relax. Roses are pretty tough. That's why they've outlasted the dinosaurs. :-) Jeri

3' really is not that deep. Most perennials are that wide. You are basically looking at 3 to 4 plants max. That is why I was suggesting bulbs. and going with Hostas you can get pretty blues, whites, yellow color going without any work at all. The hostas that have fragrant flowers could be your fragrant and attractive flowers in the fall. Not enough flowers for you...... buy a pack of zinnias and direct sow them in the spring. You cannot beat hostas for no fuss plants. The same thing with bulbs plant a little fertilizer and pretty blooms. A pretty statue, bird bath something that can be a compliment in the to the area in the winter. I hate to see bare ground in the winter.

Funny you should mention the ceiling, because DH, who recalls testing 14 colors to get the right "haint blue" for our porch ceilings here, asked if we should paint that blue. I suppose! I was really thinking of SW Interesting Aqua for the door, because it would relate to the first space you enter, the kitchen. I did this because there is really no color on the exterior but gray and white. Then I remember that there will be color ... hopefully blue hydrangeas but in any event, flora matching the blue/purple/green/white palette we have pool side. So then I am thinking I should move away from aquas and toward periwinkle to match the flowers??? In other news, approving a sketch of my door ... my landscape guy tells me the landing did not heave from winter, it is tree roots. Suggests we regrade. Probably that will also reduce the number of entry steps from 2 to 1, in which case a slab may be the way to go, Plus he reminded me we have granite steps in our lawn too. He will look at pruning the tree. He had already removed a lot the bed and as per a discussion I had w him last fall. All snow covered for now. He wants to add some irrigation, which could also enable window boxes, further obscuring the mass of white wood.

The problem with applying typical span tables to pergola construction is that with a floor or a roof, the members are acting as part of a system. For example, that 2x6 rafter is connected to its neighbor via plywood sheathing, and there's generally also a cross tie connecting it to the rafter on the other side of the peak. That reduces the likelihood of sagging or deflection. When you have a single lonely 2x6 rafter hanging out there by itself, it's going to do everything it can to sag or twist or check - especially pressure treated lumber. And like K&D mentioned, it's going to look way underscaled. In this pergola we did a couple years ago, we used 2x10s and you can see how anything else would've been a mistake: As far as the corner bracing goes, just know that you're asking a lot of a simple mechanical post/beam connection to keep that freestanding structure from swaying. I would look at beefing up to 6x6 posts. If you're planning on just doing a post base mounted to the deck and not embedding your posts in a couple feet of concrete, there's no way. Several years ago we did a closed roof pavilion and the clients wanted no angle bracing. We dug down and embedded the posts, and we had custom fabricated steel braces fabricated for the post/beam connections. Didn't matter, physics didn't care. We still had a couple inches of movement until the mason finished the fireplace and we tied into it as a structural pier. A closed roof pavilion is a lot more weight up top than a pergola, but the forces are the same.

I saw a really cute idea in a mag. They took the buttons, glued them onto colored dowels(resembled flower stems) them stuck them all down in a clay flower pot and added moss to the top. So you had a pot of button flowers! I thought it was cute!

At craft club this morning a lady showed me her necklace. It was pearly beige buttons on 1 side(all the same) & other side was pearly brown buttons. It was made with black cord maybe quilting thread or heavier, They went through 2 of the 4 holes in each button. it looked great!! They simply knotted it at the end. At Christmas I saw someone on GJ conversations or Crafts & Decorations that had made 2 "trees" of old buttons.I used a 12 in. Styrofoam cone & gold colored 20 gauge wire cut about 2 in.long for each button & ran through each button, on some plain ones I put smaller button on top & larger on bottom. I started at top & used very small antique & other buttons & worked down using some "garlands" of 8-9 buttons in that shape going around at a curve & down like a garland.If I had to glue anything I glued only the wire & not touching the buttons so I can reuse them if I ever want to. I was very pleased with results, it is beautiful, I had a few pieces of broken jewelry or single earrings, those I had to use little pearl bead on a straight pin to attach. Hope to get some pics before too long but DD is taking her time getting my pics straightened out!! Jan

I sew lots of them in a yoke pattern on tee shirts and denim jackets. You can also make easy bracelets with colored buttons on elastic thread.
