Rehabbing vintage patio set

If there's anyone out there that can help me with some resources and/or advice, I'd be eternally grateful!

I rescued a vintage metal patio set this past weekend-a 5' X 3' rectangular table and 4 chairs. The original top to the table is missing, so the former owner had a piece of plywood cut to fit the space. The 4 chairs are in good shape, but the seats need attention as they still have the original tacky yellow vinyl daisy-imprint covering. The chairs have a vine detail with a single leaf attached to the ends of the metal viney-things. That motif is carried on the sides of the table under where the plywood (or top) is attached.

I did some light sanding with 60 grit sandpaper on one of the chairs yesterday, and the superficial rust came off with no problem, and I found that the set is made of steel. When I paint this, do I need to do anything special other than priming with rust control and using a Rust Oleum (or similar)product? Also, are the steel legs of the table strong enough to support a mosaic top??

Further, are there any sites out there with just information on this type of patio furniture? All I could find were sites to purchase furniture, not neccessarily good informational sites.

Hi, I have good luck with oil base industrial paint (alkyd). Just prime the metal and brush it on. It takes about 2 days to dry. It's what fire hydrants are painted with and comes in lots of colors. It should last for years. It's available at large paint stores and Home Depot, etc. Habitat ReStores carry a big selection of mis-mixed paints.
You'll have to decide if the table can hold a glass top. We found nice round glass at Cost Plus imports for a very good price. You can probably use a larger piece of glass if you can't locate the exact size. Sometimes glass top tables turn up on the curb, at yard sales, thrift stores, etc. It's expensive to have custom cut.

Ahh...thank you for the tip on the paint. I'm wanting to do it in a shade of aqua (saw a great spread in an old Country Home magazine where the furnishings were this color, and Oh! How Florida it looked!), so hopefully I can find that color. I'll check HD tonight when I go for more sandpaper.

And of course, I'll post a pic when she's all done!!

Thanks Casey. I'm definitely going to have to think about all this for a while. Thankfully (or perhaps not) I have time at the moment since I won't be able to work on the windows for the next two weekends. Then I need to sand and prep the second sash, remove glazing, replace glass, and reglaze, and probably need to dowel the lower corners like I did the first sash. So that will take a weekend or more likely two. Then I need to let the glazing sit for 2 weeks. So I won't be painting for over a month I guess. Oh well. The good news is that none of the windows have any rot. Casey, I was all set to do oil-based paint until I read about the yellowing problem. So much of our house is bright white, including the wide baseboards and trim around the closet and door of that room, that I really need to paint it the same color. I really don't want to risk having it yellow, since I don't want to have to repaint ever. What would be your thoughts for this scenario? Do you think the alkyd paints would do any better? Do you know of any other types of water based paint that is less prone to sticking than latex? I'll admit I don't know much about paint. I do like how oil is a nice thin coat without brushstrokes. I suppose a hybrid solution might be to paint the outer face of the window all the way to the edges, but not the inside where it isn't exposed to the weather. I dunno. If there isn't a good non sticking solution other than oil, I may just be forced to leave it bare like Circuspeanut suggested. After all, the wood is still sound on those previously exposed edges after 92 years. Some light cracking, but no rot. At least the house has wide eaves.

A claw foor tub wouldn't usually be my first choice, but it sounds as if it would be the best fit for the house, which is an important consideration to me. Personally, I would hate to see a standard cast iron tub because they are too shallow for much of anything, imo, and certainly wouldn't match the character of the home. In fact, if I were the buyer, I would want to take it out asap and replace it with something a little deeper. We have a currently have a tub/shower combo in our MBR that requires the same sort of shower curtain arrangement as a claw foot tub - not sure what the previous owners were thinking there, lol. We found an extra wide shower curtain, specifically designed for such applications, on an internet site geared towards vintage-style bathrooms. It works very well and I actually prefer the set-up to the separate shower in our previous house. There is certainly no need to use three separate curtains.

I still have the aluminum patio furniture that I bought 17 yrs ago and it's held up extremely well. During strong winds the chairs are light enough to blow around the patio but they've never lifted off into orbit! When I know there's going to be a wind storm sometimes I'll push them over into a corner where they will be more protected, just so they don't bang into other things. Usually those types of storms are in the winter so if you are really worried about individual chairs moving just buy a patio cover that is large enough for the table and all the chairs around it. Last year I bought a pair of wrought iron chairs from Smith & Hawkins, they've got a black finish on them to protect the iron. S&H sells a protective cream for this type of furniture, it's expensive but if it keeps the chairs from rusting it will be worth it. As you know we get our rain in the winter and ours is a dry climate so I doubt wrought iron chairs are going to rust like they might in a more humid climate. I use Koveroos covers for all my outdoor furniture and when I know rain is coming I just throw it over them and remove when the sun is shining again. I haven't had these chairs long enough to know if they're going to rust or not but with these precautions I'm taking I'm pretty confident they'll hold up for many years. And if they do rust, well there are products to stop that from spreading. This may sound like a lot of maintenance but they're still a lot easier to keep clean than the white vinyl on my aluminum chairs. My neighbor bought a complete set of patio furniture from OSH a couple years ago, including a gazebo-like tent for overhead. I couldn't believe all that cost her only a couple hundred dollars. The problem with buying patio furniture from discount stores or hardware stores is the cushions. Better to find a set that doesn't require cushions because that's what desintegrates first. The original cushions that came with my set all faded very badly. To replace them would have cost a fortune but I know how to sew so I ordered a bolt of Sunbrella fabric from Calico Corners and made new ones. Unless the fabric says "Sunbrella" you're going to end up with faded fabric. Furniture sold by K-Mart,etc is not going to have Sunbrella fabric on it. In that case, chose a cushion that is light in color and definitely no prints. It's one thing to sew new cushions it's another when you have an unbrella that is also fading. Even though all the red & green color on our expensive Brown&Jordan unbrella had faded to a disgusting yellow I had no idea how to replace it so that one we pitched and I bought a new unbrella, this time in a solid color and using Sunbrella fabric.

Texasgal47- Yes, the front door would be near the kitchen area. The space just off the office is actually a mudroom for when we come in from the garage. Backpacks, jackets, shoes. I love builtins! I'm sure it was wonderful having a husband who could do all that! My stepdad is a wonderful woodworker, so I'm sure he'd pitch in to help with a few things like that. lavender lass- Thanks! we are actually wanting to go a bit smaller. We owned a home previously that was 975 sf and I think short of not having a second bath, it would have worked wonderfully! I know not everyone likes the idea of being that cozy, though. One of the things I truly do NOT want is my living room by the front door, but I may have to be flexible with that. Luckily my husband's background is in HVAC.When he gutted our current home, he and his brother did all the wiring, added ductwork to the entire house, new pex plumbing, etc. Almost every sq inch of this current house is new. It just lacks trees and space. And not tomatoes - but as cute as the house may have been as a cottage- I have dreams of this being more mid century modern. I think that JoAnna has great taste, and I would love for her to decorate my home any day! As far as the kitchen size goes, I was basing it off of my current kitchen that is similar in dimensions. It would also be open on the north side to accommodate folks sitting on the other side. I think I drew the dining table a bit large, lol With that being said, I am currently reevaluating this current layout, for something more simplistic and streamlined. (mainly for cost reasons). I am imagining a shed roof, with rain barrels to collect as much as possible off it. the entire north side being glass/and doors to the outside, attached garage with loft space that will be dedicated to my husbands home office, since he works from home full time. I think we could finish the attic space for the kids dedicated play space/media room, and a deck that would run the entire length of the home. I also am doing some research on alternate siding/roofing for the home, as well as an inexpensive alternative to drywall. (is that even possible???) lol I really hate drywall.

Don't forget you can mix colors if necessary. If I wasn't over here on the left coast, you could use some of mine. They may be able to custon mix it for you at HD or at a large paint store. Linda

Would love to see the pic of the table and chairs when you're done. I'm no mosaic expert that's for sure but I found something similar for an outside metal table and the glass was missing and I have a piece of plywood also. I was just going to use half marbles and maybe a design or randomly placed.

If the sandpaper doesn't do the trick, get a wire brush that goes on a drill and use that. (Remember your safety goggles) Also, after you finish all of your sanding, I'd use Must-for-Rust. This will get rid of any remaining rust in hidden spots. Then you can use any rust-oleum spray paint. Be sure to get the can that specifically says it stops rust. If you can't get your surface totally smooth, use the hammered enamel finish. It hides the imperfections. I've done two sets like this and love them.

I got a nice table and chair set last year. I used a wire brush,then Rustoleum. It's still looking great. The table was green,and the rocking chairs were black, I painted them all white. I think to mosaic the top would be a fabulous idea, I'd guess it would hold it up. I mosaiced a plastic table,one of those cheap ones,and it's holding up.

Yup, I've had good luck with Rustoleum, too. Regarding the mosaicing, that CAN be pretty weighty. I don't know what to tell you in terms of estimating what kind of weight your base will be able to support.

And you probably already have thought of this, but you might want to also make sure when you choose your grouting for the mosaicing that it's for the outdoors. I know a lot of them at Michael's aren't, so when I mosaiced some stepping stones for my garden, I had to get specific Outdoor kind.

Sounds like a great project!
