Help please! Boyfriend, kids & ex are driving me nuts!

Ok, maybe I already know the answer to the question Im going to ask & this is going to be kinda long but I dont have anyone else to ask that is not biased. I have a 10 year old son & My live in boyfriend (we have been together for 1 & 1/2 yrs) has 2 girls ages 13 & 9 & 1 boy age 8. Lately my problems seem to be increasing. He feels that it should be ok for him to treat his kids who live with their mother different/better than my son who lives with us because he doesnt get to see them except every other weekend & on holidays. For example. His 9 yr old drew on the recliner with an ink pen. He then blamed my son until she admitted to it. The next day she poured half of my laundry detergent out & admitted to it & all he did was tell her she shouldnt have done that. My son bumped my bf foot while he was taking a nap & my bf made him go out into the yard & pick up limbs for 2 hours. Also, I broke my arm 1 & 1/2 wks ago, well his 13 yr old daughter had planned a party at our house that weekend inviting about 15 kids. I asked him to have her reschedule the party due to the fact that I could not help with it & didnt feel like dealing with it with a broke arm. He refused, called me selfish & went on with the party & then she even refused to help him clean up after it & he did NOTHING! He talks bad about my son, picks on him constantly yet my son(who doesnt have a dad) says he loves him & just takes it. IVE HAD IT! I hate to leave because I keep thinking it will get better & I hate to make my son move again. But Things cant continue & the bf gets defensive when I try to talk to him about it. OH & his exwife calls or texts him EVERY day! Then she also tells the kids that if it werent for me they could be a family again ( even though she is the one who left him & they were divorced for 6 mos. before we started dating)& she calls me names in front of them. Can you say childish! Anyway,any suggestions on how to make him see the light & become a true couple would be appreciated

There are none so blind as those who will not see...
Will being the operative word.

It's understandable that he doesn't want to spend his little time with his kids disciplining them --
but that's not in their best interests either,
and it's very unfair to your son.

To see if he's even interested in being reasonable, I'd propose that the two of you work together to develop a set of rules and consequences for *all* the children. (Don't you just do it, because then he'll nitpick them and say he disagrees when it's time to enforce one of them 'against' his own kids.) But try to develop a list that's mostly his ideas and insist that they be applied evenly.

While it's unlikely to solve the problem, it might help some.
And if he refuses to do it at all, then IMO, you have a very clear signal that he has two very different standards of 'fair',
and if that's the case, you owe it to your child to intercede.

since you aren't married it shouldn't be too difficult for you to leave. your son doesn't need this. find a new place and move out.

If she really is bi-polar, that's serious business. If she's merely a drama-queen, that's bad enough... (Ever had a toxic person in your life?) Do you want to help raise a child whose primary parent doesn't have a job and will therefore push for every penny of child support she can get? A parent who is likely to not have health insurance? To be able to pay for day care, school activities and other extras? To never be able to afford a nice place in a good neighborhood with good schools and nice kids? (Sure, it might not turn out that way -- but what do you think?) Do you want to be the stepmother of a child whose mother doesn't want the father to have any meaningful role in his daughter's life? And just how meaningful a role do you think BioMom wants you to have? And how far do you think she will go to keep your role minimal? Do you really want to spend your life dealing with the behavior problems stemming from a child raised by a mother with questionable judgement? I know it's too soon to tell for sure, but what do you think? I haven't bothered to look for proof, but I suspect most bad parents raise difficult children. I'm sure you've heard all of the lines about how when you sleep with someone, you are also exposing yourself to everyone he/she has ever been with. Well, marrying a man with a child is like that. I imagine you've made the connection that the man and his daughter are a 'package deal'. Please also realize that this package deal also comes bundled with a crazy BioMom -- you get her too. Is this really the best you can do for your future?

Someone else may think a father that was a good provider or good role model is just as good a father. Like I said, it's a matter of each person's opinion or expectation of what a good parent is. "Just wait until you get Alzheimer's and turn into a cranky, paranoid old woman who doesn't recognize her own grandchildren, and your children start to whine about how you have abandoned them and how your behavior at that time negates all of the good you have ever done in your life. Oh wait - Alzheimer's is a disease, and mental illness is - according to you - no more than a moral weakness." Perhaps someday I will have Alzheimer's but it doesn't run in our family, but I guess I might get it. I would hope that my kids are learning that in our family, we value family. They see me taking care of my step mom. They see me bathe her. They see me feed her through a feeding tube. They see me clean her trach so she can breathe. They see me administer her medication so she isn't suffering in pain. They see me clean her when she has a bowel movement. They see me bandage her sores and brush her teeth and cover her up so she doesn't get cold. Now the example that they get from me is that children take care of their parents when the parents need them. Hopefully they will learn from what they see me doing. They hopefully learned through my example that I set as they were growing up, that parents don't abandon their children. It might have been easier for me to dump them off with a grandparent all the time so I could have a life. I didn't run from relationship to relationship, having multiple men in their lives. (the oldest was 3 when I had the youngest and I was alone except the 7 years I lived with my exBF) I did everything to keep my family together as they were growing up. At times, it might have been easier to run away or let someone else raise them, but I was always there for them. So, if I were to get Alzheimer's or some other disease and need care, I don't think my children would feel that I've abandoned them. I can't say for sure, but they have had a mom that has struggled at times with depression and I've always been here for them and I guess if I chose to leave them instead of dealing with my depression, they might feel like I abandoned them and might think I'm a bad parent. I don't know because I never did that. (and btw, under your philosophy, my mom was an excellent mother when we were young, but that didn't stop her from the things she did. Just because she took good care of us as babies doesn't mean she's a good parent because she bailed on us anyways. Blame alcohol or depression, but she chose to do the things she did instead of getting help)

First of all carolyn...welcome to the gardenweb. Your situation is not that uncommon. Happens lots in fact. Can I ask you a question? Why haven't you two married? Twelve years is a long time. You are lucky that most people at the family functions seem to like you. The indirect hostility hasn't gone too far yet, but if ignored it will have far reaching and extremely damaging effects. If you want to read a great book on indirect aggression, read Phyllis Chesler's book, "Womans inhumanity to woman". The fact that you two have not married leaves the ex with the hope that they will reconcile. A marriage is a definitive move. Most times;) I have always been ambivalent about a mother's relationship to her children in so-called being forced to share their affections with another woman, particularly the one living with her ex. I respect parenthood a great deal, and I have never understood the zero sum stance "most" exwives have. I also am an exwife who learned to share my children with a stepmom. Damn, if it wasn't the single hardest thing I had to learn about myself. I had all the normal instincts of wanting my children to love me most. Or, not even that, to love ONLY me as a mother. I could and did think of a bazillion reasons why she was no good. She did the same for me. Then, when their marriage ended in divorce, my ex wanted to drive her out of the lives of our children. Give me a break! They are adults now. They should have the freedom to make their own choices without my interference that may source from envy or vengeance. Who the heck was it, m. scott peck who said life is difficult. "This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."

I am in a similar situation except maybe a bit more complicated, who knows! I understand. Either way, you have to be understanding to all sides of the story, including that she is their mother and may not like you being a part of the children's lives like you want. But, if you and your man are going to make it work, eventually they will have to get to know you. As far as him...I understand that the way he is trying to deal with everything in his head is the right way (which it's not, but to him it is...for now), and you can't make him change. He needs to realize himself...that although it will be hard (more than hard or a bump in the road), that if it's you he wants to be with, he needs to focus on getting himself together as an individual and take a chance in not living with the children and realize he can have both, maybe not exactly how he wants...but it's a compromise. Basically, he has some things to figure out (and so do you). Will you always want to have to deal with his ex and everything that comes with her? Nomatter how much it seems like everything is in place, he is not...none of you are. It does take a toll on the children and I understand he wants to see them everyday and be in the same house and help financially, but where do each of you want to be next year...or say in 5 years? How long can this go on? I hope that it works out and soon. Believe me, I am not judging, just giving you things to think about that I know I have. I am only 23 but I feel I've been through quite a bit for my age. My man and I have been together off and on for 5 years, he is 33. Within those 5 years we have had other partners, he has gotten a divorce, had 3 children, I moved away and came back, and now he lives with his ex-wife...all the while she's known about me and wants me to have nothing to do with the children. Things have come a long way. We plan to get married and have children of our own and even move in soon, but with all the rollercoaster action in our past, we want to make sure everything is right before going to the next step. He is figuring out his life and so am I so we can become a union and bring God in our relationship.

I think that bumping your bf's foot did not require 2 hours of yard work. Sounds extreme to me.

I like Sweeby's ideas of rules/consequences for all the kids. If bf does not agree to that then I would let him know that you need to be the one to discipline or scold your son....just like he is the only one to do so with his kids.

He can not hold your son to one set of expectations and his kids to another. Its unfair and will make your son very resentful and unhappy.

I also think daily texting with his ex is unnecessary. Have you read these text messages?

In this type of situation I don't know if things can be fixed. If you can not change these behviors then for your sons sake it is time to leave.

Do you think he might be trying to make you mad enough to leave. If he can dump on you and your son and your still his bed mate then what does he have to worry about. If he is still keeping so cozy with the Ex maybe he has unfinished business with her. You have been living with him that long. Why not be married to him yourself? I get the feeling your not apprecated like you should be. Giving your son a bad dad may not be better then no dad. Moving again might not be so bad of an idea. Why is he dishing out punishment for your son and you don't get a say so on his daughter drawing on your things? As for the party if he had to clean up the mess all by himself thats what he gets for not following your wishes. I hope you had a BIG FAT "I TOLD YOU SO"!! Your teaching your son to be a door mat. It isn't okay for your BF to treat not only you but your son this way. Find you and your son a nice place to live and worry about keeping the two of you happy. If Mr wonderful comes along and treats you and your son good then proceed. Moving from one BF to the next is wrong for both of you. Listen to The dad he didn't have to be like 20 times a day. If you don't find that kind of man stay home.

Run - do not walk to the nearest exit.

He doesn't respect you, he doesn't respect your child. You & your son will ALWAYS be 4 & 5th on his list of priorites.

Dump him and move on. That's really the only solution.

I agree with Nikemama, it sounds to me like he is making it extremely clear that you and your son get no respect from him.

How can you love a guy like that, knowing he mistreats your son. Your son is your son for life, he is a boyfriend who may be gone in 6 months.

You know the answer. Just another non bias person to tell you that you and your son deserve better. Bumping into a persons foot does not equal 2 hours of yard work. Sorry...very abusive.
I'm married and tell off my husband if he is too harsh on our son versus his other son from his previous marriage. I understand the guilt because they only get them eow and holidays, so they do not want to punish them in any way because they want them to have 'fun'...you know the disney dad...but hey...i call it like it is. And i defended our boy and ripped a hole into him pretty quick.
Is it your house or yoru bf's you are in. Cause if its yours, pack his stuff, change the locks. I know your son likes himand wants him and takes it...but you know better. You are his mother. Your bf is treating your son like doodoo....take him out!
