Don't get me wrong. I love your seedling and you SHOULD be very proud of it. It is beautiful! And you are right, parent's names are not nearly as important as a beautiful flower and you've certainly got that. I am not criticising the flower at all. I was just very surprised by the listed parents. Here are the clues that I see about ploidy by looks. These are not full proof but are "clues". The only way to tell for sure is either attempt a cross, examine pollen under a microscope, or take a sample of the root tissue. I state these only in that they cause me to pause for a second look and I would want to validate the ploidy if it were my seedling. First, from what I understand it is VERY unusual to see metallic edge on dip's. When a dip does have it, it tends to be thin & lighter than commonly seen on a tet metallic edge. I've been looking for over a year for that trait in a dip. Your closeup shows the metallic very well (nice picture!) Second, the scapes on dip's are usually thinner & more flexible than those on tet's. The scape on your seedling looks very thick & sturdy like tet's tend to have. It holds the flowers very stiff & erect. Likewise, the flower substance is usually quite thick on tet's. I've seen dip's that have what I'd call "medium-thick" flower substance and I have seen tet's with a "medium-thick" flower substance so there is certainly crossover in this trait but in general tet's tend to have much thicker and stiffer flowers. Dips tend to carry their flowers "looser" or "softer" due to the lighter weight of the petal tissue. This can be affected by cool mornings of spring though so not a fulproof clue by one flower. The ruffle on dips, especially those of the era of your listed parent plants, tends to be much looser than the ruffles found in tets. With the exception of some dips coming out of Jack Carpenter's work, ruffles are much less pronounced in dips than in today's tets. Both of your listed parents do have nice ruffling but you'll notice it is looser- more like waves than crimps. Finally, both listed parents have a narrower petal form than your seedling looks to have. Narrow form tends to dominate in daylilies so you'd expect to have a similar form to one parents or narrower rather than a wider, rounder petals. It has taken hybridizers many years with thousands of crosses to widen the petals of daylilies. SILOAM IRVING HEPNER does have a rounder petal form than ROSY RETURNS and, as I said the roundness I see could be the illusion of a ffo that has not fully opened. The bottom petal could elongate a little more like SIH in later flowers when they open all the way and have the heat of summer. Some people more experienced that I am say they can tell ploidy by the texture of the leaves. I can't say as I could do that. I don't doubt the cross by color at all. RR has a slight eye which would be dominant and, while red & purples would be the most common colors expected from cross of those parent's colors, peaches are expected occasionally. Like I said, these are just visual clues that caused me to take a second look and I'm still learning myself. You may very well have the correct parentage listed. It just made me wonder.

Im tempted to squash the first seedling already =)... I hate that color! Too bad, becuase the plant habits and form doesnt seem bad, im always a sucker for daylilies that pass on fragrent genes as well. I will keep it until something better blooms. Im hoping the second will show better form and more of a white edging later, will see. The second bloom on the first seedling looked even more washed out today. Its not pretty in my eye. Oh well, tommorow I should have a homemade love X berry patch to bloom, Im hoping for a bright pink or a lovely shade of pink anyways. Im not into the muddy (washed out, unclear) hues, like that first seedling at all...It probable wouldve been prettier even if it was lighter or something, ug... Silverkelt
