pic of shutter used as cornice box

i have no idea how to spell cornice so please correct me so i will know. i saw a pic somewhere on here or garden junk with a long shutter or old bi-fold door used over a large window. i so want to do that with the old bi-fold doors i've had for 4 yrs or so till i figured out what to do with them. if anyone could help me i would truly appreciate it. when i try to explain it to dh i get a blank stare.

I did a search above but there are 28 pages for shutters and I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. Are you just meaning to use the shutter as the backing for a window box?

I remember seeing one used on Room by Room on HGTV. I tried to find it but couldn't. They took a shutter and added triangle shaped plywood to the sides,and hung it over the top of the window,like the canopies you sometimes see over old store windows. Then they dry brushed some maroon paint( I THINK it was maroon) over the shutters. Maybe the shutters had old green paint to begin with. Seems it was a Tuscan Kitchen episode...

Thank you for the advice!!! I'm wondering about a pediment and columns on the side of the doors. But the front of the house is so smallish I don't want to clutter it. Definatly doing window boxes on all 3 windows. I love the white idea, which isn't much change but it's what I'm comfortable with. I like the black with hint of green. Buffet girl, is there a program you used that colored the shutters? I'd love to play around with such a program. Let me know what you use! Thanks!, Teacats, it's like we were on the same page, I do use black urns on either side of the door with petunias. And there's a vine working its way up the pole now! Unfortunatly the painting the brick idea isn't an option, my husband won't go for it. If he would, I'd paint the house a sagely olive tone and make it really pretty. I guess I'm just thankful I don't have the orange brick that my neighbor does, I don't know how id work with that !! :)

OK, do over again. ;) blondie has a link above with no shutters at all. (I can't insert for some reason.) Pics up thread show shutters on dormers. When I put colors on those I was under the impression the shutters were already installed on the dormers (ala the model home link). But that might not be the case? Anyway, pics below are of shutters on garage only, beefed up a bit, and I tossed in some quick landscaping just to give it a more finished appearance. (Sloppy mess under garage but was in a hurry.) I vote for no shutters on dormers if they're not installed now. ;) A handful below, a few more added at top of page 1 in blondie's album here. Sorry Deb, I tried to reply last night, but windows shut down because of, as always, Adobe Flash 9 player. Seems so many of the ads use that now. Grrr! Anyway, what I was going to say was that with squirrel's virtual it looked fine, but the siding looked more grey so that could be why. Now that I see Awm's soft black shutters on the side of your own picture that maybe your brown isn't as brown as I've been envisioning it. So I'd say paint a couple shutters (or pieces of poster board would be easier) a soft black and attach them to your home, take pix and see what you think. I'm thinking you may even convince me. Unfortunately, krycek, everyone can't afford real shutters. It would be great if that were the case but those days are gone, really. Maybe in some parts of the country they're still used. But eliminating all shutters just because they're only decorative and lay flat on the house wouldn't make for a pretty landscape, imo. All homes do not look good that way. Nor does that particular style appeal to everyone. That is a good point on what type of shutters the poster has. Panels laid flat on the house would probably look too flat if done in the same color as the house. Louvers might work better because they're so textured. But without the added dimension of the old-fashioned shutters, like in the examples, it might be best to do a tone on tone rather than the exact or a barely different color. You can still create a beautiful, restrained palette. It also makes a big difference in the outcome whether or not you have the moldings and architectural features or details to make the facade interesting without the use of more pronounced or saturated color. The landscaping, too, can impact the effect. Enhancing your stonework this way is a great idea that could create a very charming and unique property.

yay, found it! love it! gonna make it!! well, as soon as i am done being sick!!! I am gonna paint it white or antique white with a shelf on top. our walls in the room i want to put it in ( hunting/family room) are a peanutty butter color. then i will put some of those old jars i found up there with the antique buttons i have in one. I am happy now.

I am feeling quite better now, except a bit of leftover headeache. thank you all. i am kind of a dolt when trying to figure these things out. I am married to a contracter but i don't want to ask him cuz he takes over my projects. how do i attach it to the wall? i was going to cut some side pieces and attach them, put a board on top, similiar to robolady's and them paint, its hooking it to the wall thats got me stumped.
