Fall swap: some thoughts for the Suggestion Box
Comments (21)Fall MTPS Date Bama week! Oct. 21st. If I can make the ultimate sacrifice then so can everybody else. Hohenwald has their October Fest the weekend of the 14th, UT's only open date in October, and Jan says that the place shuts down and the streets are full of yard sales or something. Anyway, "The Third Saturday In October" will be our fall swap date. Do you know how much this hurts me? I'd rather take a written beating over the spring swap every day from now til then than miss getting to see UT beating Bama!!! Oh well, I'm a dedicated Swap Nazi I reckon. Comments (78)Whether it is possible to build a house without an architect is not the relevant issue; the issue should be whether or not you want to "go to school" on your own property or would rather spend some money to get a house that is even better than you had hoped for. It's like cheap insurance or the bargain of a lifetime you didn't expect. I won't bore you with my experiences in that regard but it is common for a client to tell me their project is perfect and I always tell them it should be considering how hard we worked on it. Any good building design is primarily due to the power of the collaborative process. You can't collaborate with yourself and all collaboration partners should be very familiar with you, your family, and your property. That can't happen over the internet or by email or by reading books and perusing other people's design work. These are not casual remarks; they are the product of 40 years of working with clients....See MoreNeed expert opinion on the house
Comments (31)Reno is very detail oriented and true to design styles. And there is nothing wrong with that at all. I on the other hand tend to throw out typical styles "requirements" (unless the owner/design truely requires it) and go with what is extremely functional but just flat out looks good. If it looks good and feel right to me, then it works, regardless of ancient design rules set in place overtime by various periods. I try not to force styling onto something because then it just looks....forced. I think most of these plans you have posted appear that way. They take generic, highly inefficient layouts and force them into various failed styles to try and appeal to a larger amount of people. For example if an island is open to a living room or dining room with seating, and the owner likes that (my personal home design has it because that is how we function) then that is the soluation. However I agree with Reno in his suggestion of adding the bank of shelving. It seems to fit your needs/functionality, and styling of the home (that is not forced mind you). With that being said, I am sure he will agree with me....your instance I truely think you can greatly benefit from the services of an architect. If you need to save some money, discuss was to reduce scope with them. However a home is your biggest investment...why are you trying to find things that you feel are so so and make them work? Your plan and design is the most important part. Finishes (in and out) are secondary. You will need to flow through the house every day. You will need to cook in the kitchen every day. Make the plan fit your needs. An architect can achieve this for you. He/she can make a plan that works with your needs and then add the design to it you both will be happy with. If cost is an issue, look at ways to reduce costs on your construction. There are tons of areas you can save small amounts that can go towards hiring an archy. You can swap out finishes later if need be, but you can not easily change the layout of your home after its built if it does not work for you....See MoreNew Elevations, Please Review (Epiphany Late Last Night)
Comments (36)So for those who are interested, I did some elevations for the inside too. Just for some of the details to show my builder. these were done in photoshop by me so are not 100. the first one is the divider between the kitchen/dining and the great room. Yes I know that all natural wood is more craftsman but I wanted a lighter look and paint grade is a lot less expensive than furniture grade moldings. Especially since my wood of choice is cherry. Yes the columns will also be triangular like the porch columns. :) the fireplace wall is opposite the kitchen entry and that wall will be cherry. there will be handmade tile around the fireplace. I am considering doing a coffered ceiling in the living room again using paint grade and then painting the ceiling itself in a color. I'm not sure yet whether I'll go with a picture rail or a frieze board. I'm leaning towards the frieze board. Crown molding will be simple to work with the rest of the moldings. Maybe this for crown molding....See Morevirgilcarter
